The 2019 has a large proportion (69%) of Cabernet Sauvignon, higher than previous vintages. Bottled in May 2021, it retains that delineated, focused bouquet of blackberry scents and touches of pencil lead, hints of raspberry and cedar. Just classic Saint-Julien. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a superb line of acidity. Much more cohesive with more substance than prior vintages. There is a touch of spiciness toward the lingering finish, which reveals tobacco and gravel-like notes. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It’s worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades. About half of the fruit is sourced from estate (organically grown) vineyards, while the balance is purchased. Lovely herb-inflected cassis and hints of ripe cherries appear on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, silky and fine, but with some substance and concentration, finishing with soft, dusty tannins. As good as the 2021 is—and it is very good—it could have been legendary. That is especially evident when looking at wines from Bedrock and Old Hill, two of the other grand crus of this stretch of vineyards in Sonoma Valley. The oak is judiciously used, both here and on the palate, which is harmonious and silky-smooth in texture, disguising the depth and intensity of this Pauillac. Easily the finest Fonbadet I have tasted, it is a classy wine with big ambitions, and the best wine that I have encountered from this estate. Chapeau!JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 1, 2019 I loved the 2018 Château Fonbadet, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend (there’s 25% Merlot) that’s aging in 50% new French oak. Classic Pauillac notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, cold fireplace, and ample earthy minerality all flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that stays tight, focused, and structured on the palate. This enters the palate soft and silky, energized by brilliant acidity, with candied ginger giving way to red currants and finally, a coating of fine tannin toward the close. Both savory and sweet, this tapers off with a herbal and floral thrust and a twang of salted licorice. Brava; what a beauty. The Riserva Bossona is 100% Sangiovese refined for two years in tonneaux, followed by another year in cask. This is supple, with a balanced sweetness contrasted by zesty notes of lime and tart orchard fruit. It leaves a buzzing of residual acids that keeps the mouth watering while tapering off with medium length. This tension-filled Pinot Grigio is a total pleasure to taste.

Finishes on a warm note, with decent length and a suggestion of candied orange.
