Gewurztraminer, a spicy white wine originally hailing from the German-speaking town of Tramin in Northern Italy, has been cultivated for centuries but is enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years. "Gewurz" is famous for its aromatic nose and spicy flavor notes, and some of the world's best examples of Gewurztraminer come from the French region of Alsace. Wine lovers flock to Gewurz for its classic fruit notes, and while the wine is often sweet-smelling to the nose, it's often a dry white wine on the palate.

Outside of Alsace, wine made from the Traminer grape is most prevalent in Germany, Austria, Canada, and right here in the United States. In fact, there are several fantastic Gewurztraminers produced in New York's Finger Lakes, just a stone's throw from us here at WineMadeEasy.com.

The 2008 GEWURZTRAMINER LATE HARVEST “ESPERA” is from a Nemea vineyard. The price quoted is for a 375ml bottle. Sweet and friendly, this dessert wine is initially just sugary fun, easygoing and charming, dribbling the sugar over the palate and having just a little varietal bitterness to cut the sweet nuances. With time and air, it becomes drier and the varietal character comes to the fore a bit more, less a dessert wine and more of an off-dry wine that might find a place on some tables with food. There is not a lot of structure or depth, and it flattens quickly, but it is pleasing and drinks nicely. I’d drink it young. Drink now–2012.

Expected lychee notes get a pleasant lemon zest lift on the nose. A crisp, tangy, slightly saline front palate is linear and taut, but it opens up on the finish to bright lychee and lemon ice notes that give a lasting, fruity-but-not-sweet impression. (Layla Schlack)

A bold and floral gewurz with plenty of yellow-rose character. Generous and soft palate with a hint of bitterness that actually adds to the impression of freshness. With some aeration, cinnamon and allspice character develops. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now.
