Tasting like blood, this wine is dense and rich with lots of chocolate, espresso, earth and spice. Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022 The 2013 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is fabulous. Rich and remarkably pure, the 2013 is super-expressive right out of the gate. Bright saline notes cut through a core of lemon confit, dried flowers, apricot, tangerine peel, mint and sage. As compelling as the 2013 is, it really needs more time to open a bit. There is a feeling of transparency here that is so alluring. The 2013 is a terrific example of power with no excess weight in Champagne. I loved it. Disgorged: July 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. The bouquet alone is striking, but it is the wine’s total balance that is most appealing today. Tasted next to the Margheria, the San Rocco is deeper, darker and more overtly powerful, with a greater sense of Serralunga tannic clout. Dark cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices give the San Rocco much of its exotic personality. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood.RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2017 Azelia has hit it out of the ballpark with the three single-vineyard Barolos presented. The 2013 Barolo San Rocco is a rich and penetrating wine that keeps a sharp focus on balance and harmony all the while. This vineyard is located in Serralunga d’Alba, and the vines were planted in the early 1990s. The bouquet is robust and forthcoming with dark fruit, spice and cured leather. But ethereal notes of smoke, tar and licorice also lift delicately from the bouquet. You get both power and elegance with this cellar-worthy wine.
RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Apr 2021 A candidate for wine-of-the-vintage honors in Champagne, Roederer’s 2013 Cristal Rosé is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, red berries, stone fruit, freshly baked bread and tangerine oil. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, the vintage’s bright girdling acids are amply cloaked in exuberant, expressive and notably concentrated fruit; so while this Cristal is as tensile and age-worthy as one would expect, it’s also impressively fleshy and generous given the year. Concluding with an intensely sapid finish, the 2013 isn’t as overtly structured as the muscular, tightly wound 2012: rather, it’s the 2013’s alliance of cut and flesh, precision and charm that’s so compelling this year. This is another banner vintage for what I consider the reigning champion of the region’s tête de cuvée bottlings, and it will be worth an effort to acquire.VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021 The 2013 Cristal Rosé is searingly intense right out of the glass, just like the Blanc, except it has a bit more fleshiness because of the skin contact on the Pinot. Cristal Rosé has one of the best track records for aging in Champagne. I suspect the 2013 will join the ranks of the epic vintages, but it is painfully tight today. The blend is 55% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ) and 45% Chardonnay (from Avize and Mesnil) done in the classic Roederer infusion style in which Pinot Noir is vinified on the skins and then blended with Chardonnay to complete the fermentation. Stylistically, the Costa Russi is closest to the straight Barbaresco, but it has a little more mid-palate sweetness and density. Bright floral and minty notes add lift on the chiseled, expressive finish. The Costa Russi is the star of the show this year, considering it is the least pedigreed of Gaja’s three single-vineyard sites. In the past, this wine was blended with 5% Barbera, but this is no longer the case starting now. For the first time in recent memory, we are tasting a pure expression of Nebbiolo as harvested from the rows of vines in the Costa Russi cru, located directly below Sorì Tildìn at the base of the Barbaresco village. The vines are over 65-years-old and are planted in limestone clay and marl soils. Costa Russi is known for delicate, light-bodied wines that exhibit floral aromas of rose hip and lavender, as well as darker fruit tones at the back. Those qualities are beautifully evident in this vintage. The mouthfeel is characterized by a firm sense of tannic structure that is common to all of Gaja’s new releases in the 2013 vintage.

The two varieties marry seamlessly in the glass, exuding a distinct perfume of forest mushroom and violet. Beautifully sculpted and precise, the 2013 offers up a compelling interplay of dark red cherry, mint, lavender and licorice. At the same time, it is hard for the mind not to wander a bit and imagine what the wine might have tasted like had it been made more along the lines of the Costa Russi, especially given this site’s inherent finesse. The 2013 Sorì Tildìn is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Gaja.RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016 The 2013 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn sees fruit sourced from a vineyard site located directly above Costa Russi. This fruit is harvested at 260 meters above sea level, while the latter is located 30 meters lower in elevation. The age of the vines is slightly younger as well, with 45-years-old being the average age. That subtle change in vineyard location does much to shape the generosity and bounty of the bouquet. There is a distinct softness and roundness here that comes forth as dark cherry, pressed blackberry and plum, with tobacco and leather in a supporting role. This Barbaresco stands on solid feet with tight textural richness that comes exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape. Breaking with past tradition, Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is made with a single variety.
VN92+92+? pts. - Vinous - Dec 2015 Bright red. Reticent nose hints at red berries, minerals and flowers. Smooth and dense but juicy too, with flavors of red berries, cherry and minerals lifted by peppery acidity and a bright floral note. Finishes clean and long. There’s a lovely seamless quality to this still-youthful but extremely promising red.

A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, smoky Indian spices, vanilla and minerals. The spicy quality comes back emphatically on a long, sweet finish framed by slow-building, harmonious tannins.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Diecianni pulls me close with a hauntingly dark and spicy bouquet, showing red currants complicated by cardamom, ground ginger, exotic curries and dusty rose petals. This is a purely elegant style, seamless and enveloping, with balanced acidity adding lift to a dense wave of ripe red fruits, as pretty inner florals form toward the close. The tannins remain quite firm, yet in harmony with the residual concentration that lingers, as a salty flourish punctuates the wine well. It will be years before the 2013 Diecianni reaches full maturity, yet it will be worth the wait. (Eric Guido)

This is an estate wine from the Melkas’ 10-acre vineyard planted in Knights Valley. Beautiful, chocolaty floral notes with blackcurrants, graphite and earth are all present in this medium to full-bodied, stunningly pure and multilayered wine — 425 cases aged in 60% new French oak for 20 months and bottled unfiltered. Opaque purple and full-bodied, it offers up notes of pen ink, graphite, blackberry and cassis as well as some background toasty oak, baking spice box, licorice, and some loamy soil undertones. This big, rich, intense wine should hit its prime in about 4–5 years and last 20 or more. Another long-aging wine, and one with probably 50 years of evolution ahead of it.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2016 The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact is a bold, punchy wine that captures the radiance and intensity of Kenefick Ranch without falling into the trap of being excessively heavy, which is always an issue with this warm site in Calistoga. Iron, smoke, plum, cedar and leather build into the intense finish. This is a fairly approachable wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring.
