RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 The 2012 La Muse, which is 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec, is a smaller cuvée of 1,840 cases. The wine has plenty of spice box, cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake and Asian plum sauce, along with black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Ripe, round, full-bodied and opulent, this is a wine that can be drunk now or cellared for another three decades. Interestingly, the alcohol levels are not all that high in any of these wines, with most of them rarely exceeding 14.3%.ST94+94–97 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2014 Deep ruby. Wonderfully pure aromas and flavors of crushed cassis, minerals and exotic spices. Huge, sweet and plush but utterly primary for a wine with so much flesh. Boasts the chocolatey richness of a topnotch Pomerol from a great year, but the wine’s huge, ripe tannins will require at least five or six years of aging. Finishes with outstanding length.VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015 Mocha, chocolate, dark plums, smoke and cloves are some of the notes that inform the 2012 La Muse. Dark, sumptuous and impeccably balanced, the 2012 is super-impressive. The flavors are bold and intense, and while there is plenty of size and volume, the wine’s balance is simply impeccable. I imagine the 2012 will reward drinkers with a good 20 years or so of very fine drinking pleasure.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2014 Bryant’s flagship wine, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill offers a rare but magnificent forest floor/floral aromatic profile with lavishly rich, ripe notes of crème de cassis, blueberry and black raspberry liqueur. Fleshy, opulent, full-bodied and multidimensional, it conceals some significant tannins behind its wealth of extract and fruit. From a first-growth quality, hillside vineyard (13 acres), this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeously pure as well as impeccably well-balanced with a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood. In fact, the new oak component, which is significant, is largely obliterated by the wine’s stunning fruit. This majestic Cabernet Sauvignon should age effortlessly for 25–30 years.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014 The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is silky, layered and very polished throughout. Red cherry, spice cake, crushed flowers and mint are laced together in a gracious, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon. Hints of orange peel and cinnamon add an exotic flair as the wine opens up. Bryant’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite pretty, but it should really be more than that. It should be viscerally thrilling in the way the best vintages are.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2015 Rustic and pleasantly chewy, this offers a rich, extracted core of dusty currant and blackberry flavors, ending with a stream of gravel, anise, tar and cedar notes. Drink now through 2028. 1,000 cases made.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023 The 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva TB takes things to a much darker, deeper and more savory place than nearly any wine in its category. Cloves and cinnamon combine with balsamic spice, molten chocolate and medicinal blackberries as this blossoms in the glass. It floods the palate with racy, silky textures and an intense burst of ultra-ripe red and black fruits offset by a bitter twang of sour citrus and cocoa. Tantalizing acidity barely maintains balance yet ultimately succeeds. Exotic spices and dried black cherries saturate and are framed by a coating of fine tannins that promises decades of further evolution. This is a powerhouse. (Eric Guido)JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, September 6, 2022 This is a structured and solid Amarone, with dried fruits, sultanas, figs and iron. It’s full-bodied, yet compacted and tannic with a long and persistent finish. One for the cellar, but already impressive to drink. (James Suckling)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023 Both juicy and mouthwatering, this rich red shows a lot of personality, offering layered flavors of blackberry pie and raspberry ganache, hints of espresso and sweet smoke, plus fragrant juniper, eucalyptus, lavender and leather accents. Features firm, well-meshed tannins, with creamy edges that meld into the silky flavor range. Drink now through 2035. 668 cases made. (Alison Napjus)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014 The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Rutherford AVA, has a dense black cherry and blackcurrant-scented nose with graphite and forest floor notes, beautiful purity, full-bodied mouthfeel and super-richness and power, but elegant and complex. This is classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon and should age beautifully for 20–25 years.VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2014 Dana’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Helms Vineyard possesses remarkable structure and density, especially within the context of the year. Firm yet well-integrated tannins give the wine much of its energy, tension and focus. Black cherry jam, graphite, smoke and tobacco add nuance as the wine opens up in the glass. Far from an easygoing 2012, the Helms is going to need time to fully come together. There is so much to look forward to here. This is the first vintage since 2008 that was vinified in wood uprights, as was originally intended. The intervening vintages have been much shorter, so they were done in barrel. The 2012 impresses for its balance of fruit, acidity and tannin.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2015 Dense and pleasantly earthy, with an edge of loamy earth and crushed rock minerality cutting through the core of currant, blackberry and mocha before the dense, earthy tannins fold in. The finish is long and engaging. Drink now through 2030. 284 cases made.
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013 Also showing the purity and freshness of the vintage, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin, which was harvested towards the end of September, displays classic licorice, crushed violets, flowers and mineral-tinged black fruits to go with a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced and lively feel on the palate. Always 100% Grenache that comes from very old vines and sandy soils, it is one impressive tank sample. Give it a couple years in the cellar and enjoy bottles over the following decade or longer. Drink 2015–2027.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014 Dense but refined, showing layers of fig, boysenberry and blackberry paste offset with notes of anise, fruitcake, allspice, mulled plum and black tea. Exhibits a silky feel through the finish, with lots of sneaky length as an iron accent lingers gracefully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 390 cases imported.ST92+92–94 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Deep ruby. Dark berries, incense, candied flowers and minerals on the highly perfumed nose. Offers sweet black raspberry and lavender flavors that become spicier with aeration. Fine-grained and sappy, with excellent finishing clarity and smooth, harmonious tannins adding grip. This sexy Chateauneuf will likely be delicious soon after release, but it has the concentration to strongly suggest that patience will be rewarded.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014 Tightly coiled for now, this features an intense, vivid core of anise, blackberry coulis, plum paste and macerated fig fruit, with black tea, smoldering tobacco and warm ganache notes. Long and dense, but very silky, with gorgeous violet and pastis details lingering in the background. Should unwind with time. Best from 2017 through 2035. 390 cases imported.RP95+95–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013 Most likely one of the top 2–3 wines produced, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a rough blend of 80–85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre (which was harvested October 10) and the balance Syrah, that hit 15.4% natural alcohol. Seeing the same elevage as the 2011, it sports an inky purple color as well as spectacular array of black and blue fruits, violets, liquid flowers and underbrush to go with an energetic, seamless and full-bodied profile on the palate. Lighter weight than the 2007 and 2010, it possesses notable freshness, purity and elegance. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and thrill for upward of two decades. Drink 2016–2032.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015 Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. There’s 15% alcohol here, which is actually quite low for this bottling, and I don’t detect any undue heat.ST93+93–95 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Inky ruby. Blackberry, blueberry and pungent herbs on the mineral-accented nose, with a floral topnote providing lift. Impressively sweet, lush and deep, showing sexy flavors of dark berry preserves, candied lavender and spicecake. Finishes very long and smooth, with supple tannins, lingering spiciness and outstanding clarity.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014 One of the blockbusters in the vintage, the inky-colored 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape La Reine des Bois — 80% Grenache, completely destemmed and aged 12 months in 80% stainless steel and 20% old barrels — offers fantastic richness and depth in its blackberry liqueur, graphite, wood smoke and crushed-rock-like aromas and flavors. An elegant, stylish and polished example of this cuvée, it comes closest in my mind to a lighter-weight 2010. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with fine tannin, it will drink well for 10–15 years.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015 Inky ruby. High-pitched red and dark berry scents are complemented by suggestions of candied flowers and smoky Indian spices. Silky, sweet and palate-staining, offering intense black raspberry and blueberry flavors and an exotic twist of blood orange. Manages to be both powerful and lithe, finishing with harmonious tannins and outstanding clarity and length.ST93+93–95 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Deep ruby. Fresh black and blue fruits on the highly perfumed nose, with floral and Indian spice nuances adding complexity. Sappy, penetrating and pure, with very good depth and energy to its boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors. At once rich and lively, finishing with impressive power, supple tannins and lingering spiciness.
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013 As to the 2012s, while there will be no Cuvee da Capo in the vintage, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is a beauty. Tasted out of multiple barrels (all of which rated between 94 and 97), it should be a classic Pegau with aromatics similar to the 2010, yet not quite as much depth or richness. Full-bodied and nicely concentrated, all of the samples showed the freshness of the vintage, with ample mid-palate depth, high quality tannin and loads of character. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and have 15–20 years of longevity. Drink 2016–2032.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2015 A dark, alluring style, with tobacco, chestnut and alder notes surrounding a core of blackberry, plum and cherry fruit. Lots of garrigue details line the finish, showing a warm paving stone hint. Should settle in nicely in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2023. 6,670 cases made.ST92+92–94 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Bright purple. Smoky, spice-accented aromas of blackberry and cherry-cola, with sexy floral and mineral overtones. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering an array of red and dark berry preserve flavors complicated by hints of Indian spices and black pepper. Rich and energetic, with strong finishing thrust, slow-building tannins and a late kick of smoky minerality. I was looking for some funky gaminess here but didn’t find any.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014 The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is in the top 2–3 wines in the vintage. Possessing rock-star concentration and depth, full-bodied richness and loads of sweet tannin, it offers layers of ripe blackberry, graphite, licorice and toasted-spice aromas and flavors. One of the more powerful and structured efforts in the vintage, it nevertheless always stays balanced, graceful and light on the palate. Give it 2–3 years and enjoy bottles through 2027.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015 Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed bouquet of ripe dark berries, potpourri and sandalwood, with a mineral note adding vibrancy. Round and seamless on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a strong jolt of candied rose. Quite suave and approachable, finishing with solid punch, gentle tannins and lingering spiciness.ST91+91–93 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Inky ruby. Strongly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe blackberry, blueberry, violet and smoky oak. Seamless and sweet, offering plush dark berry compote flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. Becomes spicier with air and finishes long and gently tannic, with clinging sweetness and a hint of licorice.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015 Deep ruby. Heady spice-accented blackberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave floral and spice qualities, with white pepper and licorice nuances emering with air. Seamless, broad and sweet in the mouth, offering silky black and blue fruit preserve flavors and a hint of allspice. Closes juicy and long, with slow-building tannins and lingering spiciness.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014 The direct black currant and fig paste notes are underscored with tobacco, tar and roasted alder hints, revealing an echo of Black Forest cake. The finish rumbles along, leaving a dark, slightly muscular feel. Best from 2015 through 2027. 125 cases made.ST91+91–93 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Bright ruby. Candied red fruits, spicecake and minerals on the highly perfumed nose, with an exotic blood orange nuance in the background. Juicy and precise, displaying very good clarity and lift to its sappy raspberry and cherry flavors. Darker in tone on the finish, clinging with impressive tenacity and appealing sweetness.RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014 The 2012s Châteauneuf du Pape Signature is a seamless, graceful red that has pretty kirsch, blackberry, spice and garrigue to go with a forward, supple style on the palate. Made from 65% Grenache, 16% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah and 6% other permitted varieties, it has sweet tannin, a light, clean texture and keeps you coming back for another drink. Enjoy it over the coming decade.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Aug 2015 Probably the longest-lived wine in the vintage from Santa Barbara, Jonata’s 630-case 2012 El Desafio de Jonata checks in as a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot that saw 80% new French oak. It reveals a masculine, meaty, structured personality as well as rockin’ notes of blackcurrants, wood smoke, lead pencil shavings and crushed rock. Full-bodied, balanced and with building tannic grip, it still shows the suppleness of the vintage, but needs 2–3 years to even start to be drinkable. It will have 2–3 decades of longevity.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2015 The Cabernet Sauvignon-based 2012 El Desafio de Jonata graces the palate with its sensual personality. Raspberry jam, pomegranate, leather, smoke, spice and tobacco all blossom in the glass. Big, rich and inviting, the 2012 boasts superb intensity and resonance, although it doesn’t quite have the visceral thrill of the very best wines in this range. Shades of rose petal and mint add the closing shades of nuance. The 2012 was aged in French oak, 80% new.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Aug 2015 A great wine, the 2012 Todos Proprietary Red Wine offers terrific notes of black and red raspberry fruits, toasted bread and spice. As it sat in the glass, more classic Syrah olive, bacon and a touch of violet all developed. Medium to full-bodied, juicy, mouthfilling and loaded with sweet fruit, it doesn’t skimp on structure and will have at least a decade of longevity. Think of this as a mini-La Sangre. The blend here is 75% Syrah with 7% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance a mix of varieties.VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2015 The 2012 Todos, Jonata’s Syrah-based blend, is once again delicious. A touch of appassimento gives the 2012 an extra kick of flavor and texture intensity. Sweet cherry, raspberry jam, spice, mint and licorice notes abound in this racy, bold red. Todos is Jonata’s least expensive red wine, but it competes quite favorable with the higher-end bottlings. The 2012 was aged mostly in larger-format French oak barrels, with 40% new wood.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 Here’s a wine that is completely new to me (but I am thrilled by the introduction). The 2012 Carla 6 is a spectacular expression of 100% Sangiovese with bursting berry and cherry aromas that give the wine an immense sense of buoyancy and vertical lift. Spice, leather, tobacco, cola, and licorice flood in at the rear and add to the wine’s wide aromatic foundation. The tannins are silky smooth and the wine glides clear over the palate in seamless fashion. One third of the wine is aged in new oak and the rest sees six months of cement. It’s an absolute beauty.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2015 The 2012 Carla VI, 100% Sangiovese, shows just how rich and concentrated Sangiovese can be in this part of Chianti Classico. Plum, red cherry, cinnamon and new leather flesh out in a sumptuous, large-scaled wine built on power and intensity. There is good varietal definition in the glass, but all the flavors are amped up.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2014 A lush, velvety style, with gorgeous flavors of raspberry ganache, plum pâte de fruit and cherry preserves, lined with ample graphite-edged grip and driving authoritatively through a finish studded with licorice snap, black tea and tar notes. Has power, grace and serious length. Impressive. Best from 2016 through 2026. 56 cases imported.RP94+94–96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2013 The top wine of the estate, the tiny production 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon is almost all Grenache and was aged in 600-liter demi-muids. Gorgeous all around, with a sexy, voluptuous profile, it gives up notions of sweet blackberries, currants, underbrush, strawberry and mineral on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and brilliantly textured, with a relatively accessible profile, it should still be given a year, or three, in the cellar once released. It should age effortlessly for 15–20 years or more. Drink 2015–2027.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015 Bright ruby. A complex, intensely perfumed bouquet displays scents of black raspberry, cherry-cola, Asian spices and floral oils, with a smoky mineral note emerging with air. Stains the palate with vibrant red and dark berry flavors, with juicy acidity and a jolt of white pepper providing focus and lift. Wonderfully balanced and deep, finishing with serious power and smooth tannins that are quickly absorbed by the wine’s sappy fruit.ST93+93–95 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014 Inky ruby. Blackberry, singed plum, cassis, vanilla, bitter chocolate and potpourri on the intensely perfumed nose. Dense, concentrated, sweet and seamless, offering primary black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a spicy oak accent. Finishes with broad, supple tannins, a suggestion of licorice and excellent length.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2014 The 2012 Torrione is seriously beautiful. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and mocha notes flesh out in a supple, radiant wine endowed with gorgeous depth and pure resonance. All the elements meld together in this gracious, juicy Sangiovese-based red from Petrolo. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend.SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014 Effusive aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry and peony highlight this elegant red. Well-integrated tannins amp up the structure and density on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2023. 3,750 cases made.
