You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.

Reminding me of a great Cornas on steroids with its gamy, exotic character paired with beautiful richness, it has fabulous purity, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It offers loads of black fruits, roasted herbs, peppered meat, violets, and bacon fat as well as full-bodied richness, a round, opulent style, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster finish. WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22 Robert Eden pulls this wine from his biodynamically tended vineyards in the rocky, windy highlands of La Livinière. A blend of syrah with grenache and carignan, it’s a wine you can sink your teeth into, and it responds with juicy black fruit, spicy and fresh, and notes of mint, licorice and rose. Vinified in cement eggs and vats, it retains a sense of cool, stony clarity that brings light to its darkness and beams them into long-lasting fragrance. It’s at once firmly structured and ethereal, a balance that makes it addictive as well as potentially long-lived.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021 Another magical wine in the lineup, the 2019 No 8 is Syrah-based, with 9% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier. There should be a little over 800 cases produced, and it was 55% destemmed and is still resting in 65% new French oak. I love its freshness and elegance, and it’s one of those rare incredibly hedonistic yet seamless, weighty wines that does everything right. Pure cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, and white pepper slowly emerge on the nose, and it’s full-bodied, with perfect balance and a great, great finish. The full-bodied palate has beautiful freshness with a provocative peppery note and bags of ripe, rich black fruits, finishing long and spicy. Due to be bottled in mid-August 2021, 850 cases and a few magnums will be made.

Smooth, broad and appealingly sweet, offering weighty cassis, singed plum and cherry-vanilla flavors and a touch of smokiness.
