Rich and intense yet silky textured and refined on the concentrated palate, this is a juicy, highly elegant, perfectly balanced, persistently salty and mouth-salivating Haut-Lieu with very fine tannins and a long, firm and pretty powerful but elegant and complex finish. Still more stringent than the Le Mont Demi-Sec in the beginning, but after aeration, this is not just a greatly finessed Chenin but one of the finest Haut-Lieu’s I have tasted from Huet. Tasted as a tank sample in April 2021. (Stephan Reinhardt)VN95+95–97 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 Pear and pineapple aromas meet fine, floral characters in the 2020 Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu. While this wine’s edges are rounded, it is refined and elegant. It has a sense of density on the mid-palate, but it’s not about weight or richness despite its demi-sec status. The wine has an intensity and a structured core reflecting the naturally low yields here. While there is 20g/L of residual sugar, a sense of freshness and underlying urgency pulls this wine through, leaving an off-dry impression. Unfinished sample. (Rebecca Gibb MW)
VN97+97–98 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2020 Clos du Bourg Première Trie comes from a warm parcel and a warm vintage, meaning that the grapes were a little quicker to ripen than the norm — but it’s still outstanding. A richly, slightly smoky example with pineapple, orange, florals and agave nectar. Huge intensity and lots of sweet fruit (90g/L), yet it doesn’t become lush or heavy, the acidity still making your mouth water in spite of that sucrosity. There’s a fine chalky texture that lingers on the long finish. While it’s already a delight to encounter now, the combination of acidity and sweetness means this can go on and on. Tasted over three days as an unfinished sample, it was still fresh as a daisy. While it didn’t elicit the perfect 100-point goosebumps, there’s not a lot to fault here.SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 This lush, refined wine boasts lots of complexity, with pineapple chutney, yellow fig paste, verbena and heather notes that are edged with crystalized ginger, mango, cardamom and mineral elements. Beautiful and enticing. Drink now through 2040. 330 cases made.RP96+96–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The white-golden colored 2020 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux Première Trie shows CO2 pearls in the glass, and it indeed opens somewhat reductive, asking for a Burgundy glass. Yet even though the 2020 Clos du Bourg asks for patience, it already indicates a terribly concentrated bouquet of lemon chutney and humid chalk. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and juicy, very elegant and generous Chenin from this ancient six-hectare grand cru (one of the oldest in France, as the domaine assures). It is immediately attractive, stimulatingly piquant and nourishes hope for a great future. The potential is doubtlessly there, but 7–10 years of our patience is presumed. Tasted as a sample in May 2021.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 It might be delicate but the 2020 Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is also rather succulent, coating the mouth with its sweet embrace. A combination of white flowers and nectarine creates an appealing perfume. There’s a sense of energy that runs through the wine, providing a sense of direction and purpose. The core of sweetness (50–60g/L) doesn’t tip over into lushness but is held together by its acidity and structure. (Rebecca Gibb MW)RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is clear, pure, fresh and concentrated on the lemon and pineapple-scented nose. You wouldn’t guess this is sweet from the nose, as the bouquet is precise and fresh. Round and mellow but also refined and elegant on the palate, with a stimulating mineral freshness and lingering salinity and piquancy, this is a gorgeous, very delicate and perfectly balanced Vouvray to drink even young, but as experience tells me, this Chenin Blanc from the now 15-hectare Ur vineyard of Domaine Huet can also be aged for decades, even if the wine is not really dramatic in all its pristine beauty. Tasted as final sample in May 2021.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 This is a very fine, fragrant and floral Le Haut-Lieu Sec. While delicate, the 2021 fills the mouth with a cloud of pure fruit reminiscent of violets, apple and nectarine skin. There’s a fine sinew that pulls the wine through the finish. RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux offers a deep, complex and concentrated bouquet of highly ripe and candied fruits yet with this coolish shimmering lime zest probably coming from the pebbly silex and deep green clay soil of this nine-hectare “grand cru.” Full-bodied, rich and round on the palate, this is a dense, viscous, mouth-filling, lush and mellow yet also tight and piquant Le Mont whose complexity is lifted by dramatic drive and tension and carried to a long and salivating finish by lingering salinity. You can never go wrong in buying a Le Mont and in particular this one. This is a great effort from a very particular vintage that forced the harvest team to make the strictest selections. It was well worth the effort. (Stephan Reinhardt)VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 There are many shouty wines in the world, but the 2020 Le Mont Moelleux is understated, which is highly attractive. There’s finesse and elegance to this sweeter style (49g/L). Delicate exotic characters such as dried papaya and pineapple sit alongside floral notes. While there’s excellent concentration, this remains delicate. The finish is appetizing thanks to fine acidity and phenolic structure, which hold the mouth reassuringly on the finish. An excellent wine that offers real drinkability in youth thanks to its appealing primary fruit, but there’s no hurry at all to drink. A smidgen more length would take it into even higher realms (although, let’s be fair, it’s not far off as good as it gets) (Rebecca Gibb MW)
VN96+96–97 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The pure and intriguing nose of the 2020 Le Mont Sec is fine and focused, offering a flinty, smoky note as well as white flowers, pineapple and just-ripe pear. A taut and precise style that delivers plenty of concentration yet conveys a sense of delicacy in the mouth. It has a fine, structured, lengthy finish, an element of tension holding the palate with confident grip. Unfinished sample.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The only dry wine from the vintage is the 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Sec, whose tank sample shows a classy, pure, precise and chalky/lemony bouquet with bright and perfectly healthy fruit and some herbal as well as yeasty aromas. On the palate, this is a dense, fabulously juicy, fruity and elegant Chenin whose immediate attraction and pure finesse initially reminds me of Riesling, whereas the texture is too rich and the salty and finely tannic finish too intense and powerful for Riesling. With more aeration, the Le Mont gets more and more intense and complex but also, tannic-wise, more wild. The 2020 has great tension, energy and grip and is highly promising. Tasted a few days before bottling in April 2021.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Invigorating acidity binds together the pure, beautiful ginger, verbena, lime and juicy white peach notes in this refreshing, complex white, with mineral notes echoing on the mouthwatering finish. VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Chenin Blanc Sterling Ranch is an attractive, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next few years. Like many 2020s, the Sterling Ranch Chenin has good aromatic presence and energy but it is just a bit lacking in the mid-palate. This is a very pretty wine for the vintage.
