Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Feb 2023 The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc L’Après-Midi, blended with 3% Sémillon, fermented in barrel and matured for eight months, bursts from the glass with touches of flint and candle smoke that give way to apricot, acacia and alluring herbal tones. The light-bodied, gently creamy palate surprises with its explosive, lime and panna cotta-driven flavors, expanding to more savory beeswax undertones as it glides across the palate, complemented by focused acidity. Powerful yet energetic, it promises dynamic development in bottle over the next 5–7 years or more. 2,038 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022 Spicy, high-toned and strong in tannin, this is an impressive wine in its youth that will only get better. Cardamon, rose petal, black tea and tree bark give it a savory edginess that appeals and adds to the overall complexity and measured weight, finishing bright and fresh. Enjoy best 2030–2035. (Virginie Boone)RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach is one of Dumol’s larger cuvées, and production was normal despite the challenges of the vintage (3,750 cases). It has alluring purity on the nose, with scents of cranberries, rhubarb, tobacco leaves, orange peel and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated and powerful without losing detail, framed by powdery tannins and refreshing acidity. It offers an array of spice and floral accents on the finish. Lovely! (Erin Brooks)JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach has a rich perfume of black cherry cola, sassafras, and sweet violets. The palate is full and ripe, with black raspberry as well as ripe tannins and a note of black tea. Drink over the next 15 or more years. (Audrey Frick)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022 Delivers a core of gently mulled blood orange and pomegranate, with anise and singed vanilla on the finish. Features a light echo of wood spice, too. A juicy, open, crowd-pleaser style. Drink now through 2025. 3,814 cases made. (James Molesworth)VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint and rose petal are some of the notes that grace this airy, delicate Pinot from DuMOL.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The medium ruby colored 2019 Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley boasts an alluring mélange of spicy red and black cherries and berries on the nose, plus touches of cracked pepper, potpourri, aniseed and underbrush. The palate is full-bodied, spicy and layered, with grainy tannins and juicy acidity highlighting the spicy accents on the long finish. (Erin Brooks)WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2021 From a selection of grower vineyards and blended with 15% Petite Sirah, this is a widely accessible and desirable wine that shows notes of crushed rock and dried herb. Concentrated flavors of blackberry and cherry combine well to offer richness and plenty of reward. (Virginie Boone)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) offers up copious jammy dark fruit, espresso, chocolate, cloves, licorice and new leather. Juicy and flamboyant to the core, the 2019 will fit the bill for readers looking for an affordable, succulent Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21 Lush, toasty oak richness meets astringent tannins in this warm, spicy cabernet. As the wine opens, the green edge of the tannins turns into an asset, pointing up mineral notes, suggesting this will benefit from a year in the cellar.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 From a vineyard planted with about 2% Viognier, the 2019 Syrah Peters Vineyard has a medium ruby-purple color and continually evolving aromas of Morello cherries, blueberries, dried herbs, lavender and bitter chocolate. The medium-bodied palate offers delicate, crunchy fruits with fine peppery accents, a pleasurable chewy texture and bursts of juicy acidity that drive the long, layered finish. (Erin Brooks)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso features baked berries, cherry cordial, spice cake and potpourri on the nose with touches of mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, refreshingly tart and with a chewy backbone, it is wonderfully opulent and spicy on the palate with a long, earthy finish.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2018 The 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is utterly sublime. Lifted, aromatically precise and nuanced, the 2016 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is fabulous. Rose petal, blood orange, cranberry and raspberry notes give the Monte Rosso striking aromatic presence and brightness. Unfortunately, Bedrock, like all the other wineries that purchased grapes at Monte Rosso, no longer have access to the fruit off this historic ranch. Morgan Peterson and Chris Cottrell certainly chose a strong vintage as their last. The 2016 is sublime.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018 Comes at you like a surly teenager but wins you over with power and personality. Cracked pepper and licorice aromas lead to brooding blackberry, orange zest and bay leaf flavors that finish with big but polished tannins. Best from 2019 through 2026. 300 cases made.
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 This grows at Beringer’s 600-acre Knight’s Valley ranch, in the hills west of Calistoga, where the harvest in 2019 extended from mid- to late October. The wine sustains the cool elegance this vineyard can give to cabernet, a supple, high-elevation wine with gentle ripeness, lasting on notes of tarragon and fresh garden herbs.RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 There were more than 160,000 cases of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley produced, so it’s good to see that it is performing well. There’s an attractive floral top note that adds a touch of complexity to the cassis fruit, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and even elegant. It’s a better wine — and far better value — than many entry-level wines sourced from Napa Valley.VN8787 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley is a powerful, wild and brooding wine It shows good depth, but I find the mid-palate lacking in depth and less freshness than I expect to see in a young Knights Valley wine. Hints of cherry, earthiness and gravel linger, but the 2019 never comes together fully. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard is a gorgeous, wonderfully complete wine that shows why this site is so highly regarded. Red berry fruit, rose petal, leather, blood orange and spice open in a bouquet that is so compelling. Silky tannins wrap around a huge core of fruit as the Carlisle envelops every corner of the palate. Deep, layered and beautifully persistent, the Carlisle is wonderfully vivid from the very first taste. I loved it.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Impressively structured and richly styled, this vibrant version opens to deep raspberry and cherry flavors laced with licorice, sage and mint, building toward broad-shouldered tannins. Drink now through 2030. 696 cases made.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2023 A structured and layered white with apple, light honey and acacia aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Creamy mouthfeel. Phenolic texture that runs through the wine. Flavorful yet subtle finish. Touch of flint and cedar. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Chardonnay Wester Reach is bright and nicely focused. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk and white pepper all lend tons of nuance. Vineyard sites are Flax, Cornerstone, Heintz, Lorenzo and El Diablo. There’s terrific energy and focus here. (Antonio Galloni)
