Shop the Best Wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.

Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.

The 2019 Proprietary Red Wine Legend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah, 8% Counoise, and the rest Grenache and Tannat, sourced from Sonoma County. This spicy, textured, herbal (although not green) effort has lots of red and black fruits, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It’s a character-filled, satisfying red to drink over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
The appellation 2019 Pinot Noir is brilliant, and I like it every bit as much as many of the more expensive single vineyards. Spiced red fruits, loamy earth, leather, and subtle smoke notes give way to a medium-bodied, textured, incredibly charming Pinot Noir that already offers pleasure yet has the balance to keep for at least 7–8 years. 5. Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56493

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
Moving to the reds, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley offers a medium ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful perfume of mulberries, black cherries, Asian spices, and roasted herbs. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it still brings plenty of fruit, with a great mid-palate and outstanding length on the finish. It’s common in 2019 for the Russian River Valley Pinots to show a beautiful sense of freshness and elegance, and this wine delivers those qualities in spades. It can be drunk any time over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Feb 2021
Medium ruby-purple, the 2019 Pinot Noir opens with broody cranberries and blackberries with touches of earth and charcuterie. The medium-bodied palate is a bit brighter than the nose would lead you to believe, with a grainy, fresh frame and gregarious, spicy fruits. It’s a pretty expression that combines powerful fruit with a lighter frame than might be expected from the Russian River Valley. 7,379 cases produced.
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 14, 2022
Pretty aromas of red cherries, ripe wild strawberries and rooibos tea. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-balanced acidity that keeps the sweet red and black-cherry character going throughout. Added notes of tobacco and vanilla stick come in. Drink now.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is super-expressive right out of the gate. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, spice and rose petal meld together. Supple and fruity, with tons of charm, the Russian River Pinot has a ton to offer. I would prefer to cellar it for a year or two, as the tannins need time to settle down.

  6. Ridge Pagani Ranch Zinfandel

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#55977

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
The deep purple/ruby-hued 2019 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch comes from a site in the Sonoma Valley and is 90% Zinfandel, 6% Petit Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. Red plums, blueberries, blood orange, and candied violet notes all emerge from this beauty, which is medium to full-bodied and offers an ultra-fine texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. This is one impressive, satisfying Zinfandel to enjoy over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
Deeply structured but not weighty, showing black raspberry and blueberry flavors laced with bittersweet chocolate, green peppercorns and fruitcake spices that build tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2030. 3,990 cases made. (Tim Fish)

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
I also loved the 2019 Pinot Noir White Label. This is another classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, offering loads of framboise and ripe strawberry fruit intermixed with subtle spice, forest floor, and subtle herbal nuances. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it’s wonderfully balanced and has a silky, polished mouthfeel as well as a great finish. It’s another beautiful Pinot Noir that I suspect will have a good decade of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  9. Dehlinger Goldridge Pinot Noir

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58953

    WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021
Juicy layers of berry and cherry are met by spicy acidity in this deliciously well-made, structured and highly enjoyable wine, grown in the plentiful, generous soils for which it is named. Dusty texture provides a grip that takes on a stone-like minerality and pleasing complexity. (Virginie Boone)
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Pinot Noir Goldridge is a very pretty, delicate wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, spice and mint all grace this understated, nuanced Pinot Noir from Dehlinger. This is a decidedly gracious style. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Fruity and open-textured, with luscious spiciness to the red cherry and berry flavors that are bound together by a creamy richness. Floral hints line the finish. Drink now through 2025. 945 cases made. (Kim Marcus)

  10. Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59867

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Martini clone from the core of the estate. A heady, ample wine, the 2019 is endowed with striking opulence. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha shows tremendous depth. Attractive floral notes emerge with a bit of aeration, adding brightness. The contours are remarkably soft for a young mountain Cabernet. These wines age beautifully, their youthful opulence notwithstanding, so I would not be in a rush here. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022
Alluring, with steeped plum and cassis notes cruising through, backed by lively licorice snap, bramble and sweet tobacco accents. A long echo of singed alder permeates on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2034. 2,250 cases made. (James Molesworth)

    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021
A hint of stemmy earthiness leads the way to a luxurious, expansive and velvety palate. The acidity is edgy and fresh, lifting the savory and floral components over a rich, complex berry core. (Virginie Boone)
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley opens with savory scents of cranberry sauce, rhubarb, cherries and violet perfume with earthy and meaty touches. The medium-bodied palate is lushly fruited with a grainy texture, juicy freshness and long, spicy finish. 5,200 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)
    JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
Leading off a slew of Pinot Noirs, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley reveals a healthy ruby color as well as terrific raspberry and cherry fruits, medium-bodied richness, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, present yet light tannins, and a good finish. It’s charming, and while it drops off slightly on the finish, it’s balanced and satisfying. It should have 7–8 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  12. Louis M. Martini Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#38768

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022
A delicious, savory cabernet with aromas and flavors of dried flowers and cherries. Medium body with round, creamy tannins. Savory and flavorful. Supple. Real cabernet character. Delicious now.
    RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
With 180,000 cases produced and a price tag under $25 (savvy shoppers will be able to find it under $20), consumers shouldn’t overlook Martini’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County, which comes largely from the Gallo-owned properties of Frei Ranch (39%) and Barrel Creek (34%). It offers up bright cassis notes on the nose, plus hints of boysenberry and cherry, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and softly dusty on the finish. While it’s less rich and complex than many more expensive Cabernets from Napa and Sonoma, it’s a solid, fruit-forward wine that most readers should find affordable. (Joe Czerwinski)

The medium ruby colored 2019 Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley boasts an alluring mélange of spicy red and black cherries and berries on the nose, plus touches of cracked pepper, potpourri, aniseed and underbrush. The palate is full-bodied, spicy and layered, with grainy tannins and juicy acidity highlighting the spicy accents on the long finish. (Erin Brooks)

From a selection of grower vineyards and blended with 15% Petite Sirah, this is a widely accessible and desirable wine that shows notes of crushed rock and dried herb. Concentrated flavors of blackberry and cherry combine well to offer richness and plenty of reward. (Virginie Boone)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) offers up copious jammy dark fruit, espresso, chocolate, cloves, licorice and new leather. Juicy and flamboyant to the core, the 2019 will fit the bill for readers looking for an affordable, succulent Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)
    WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Lush, toasty oak richness meets astringent tannins in this warm, spicy cabernet. As the wine opens, the green edge of the tannins turns into an asset, pointing up mineral notes, suggesting this will benefit from a year in the cellar.
