Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.

(MaryAnn Worobiec)WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023 Floral and aromas take the lead in this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine that offers a soft mouth-feel and the roundness that comes from aging on the lees. Concentration in peaches melons and a good viscosity help the wine stand out. (Jim Gordon)
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 William Foley grounded his wine empire in Sonoma County with the purchase of the Chalk Hill Estate in 2010. Michael Beaulac, who joined the team in 2021, produced this wine from other Foley family vineyards in Carneros, Chalk Hill and the Sonoma Coast. In it, he captures the chamomile character of chardonnay, showcasing the variety’s gentle fruit rather than its tropical ripeness. Scents of lemon cream and malt add to the wine’s richness.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Presents pear drop, Fuji apple, ripe Bartlett pear and lemon blossom details that are elegant and restrained, but they weave in and out on a light, fresh frame that’s quite impressive. Gains a savory element, thanks to a touch of toasted sesame seed. Drink now. 98,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Deeply structured and briary, with a mix of red and black fruit accented by licorice, dill and savory underbrush flavors. Finishes with medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 8,900 cases made.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - May 2022 The 2020 Geyserville is quite soft in this vintage. Bright red-fleshed fruit, crushed flowers, cedar, spice and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this mid-weight edition of Geyserville. All things considered, the 2020 is nicely done.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 The deep purple/ruby-hued 2019 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch comes from a site in the Sonoma Valley and is 90% Zinfandel, 6% Petit Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. Red plums, blueberries, blood orange, and candied violet notes all emerge from this beauty, which is medium to full-bodied and offers an ultra-fine texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. This is one impressive, satisfying Zinfandel to enjoy over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022 Deeply structured but not weighty, showing black raspberry and blueberry flavors laced with bittersweet chocolate, green peppercorns and fruitcake spices that build tension toward refined tannins. WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021 Juicy layers of berry and cherry are met by spicy acidity in this deliciously well-made, structured and highly enjoyable wine, grown in the plentiful, generous soils for which it is named. Dusty texture provides a grip that takes on a stone-like minerality and pleasing complexity. (Virginie Boone)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Pinot Noir Goldridge is a very pretty, delicate wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, spice and mint all grace this understated, nuanced Pinot Noir from Dehlinger. This is a decidedly gracious style. (Antonio Galloni)SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Fruity and open-textured, with luscious spiciness to the red cherry and berry flavors that are bound together by a creamy richness. Floral hints line the finish. Drink now through 2025. 945 cases made. (Kim Marcus)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Martini clone from the core of the estate. A heady, ample wine, the 2019 is endowed with striking opulence. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha shows tremendous depth. Attractive floral notes emerge with a bit of aeration, adding brightness. The contours are remarkably soft for a young mountain Cabernet. These wines age beautifully, their youthful opulence notwithstanding, so I would not be in a rush here. (Antonio Galloni)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022 Alluring, with steeped plum and cassis notes cruising through, backed by lively licorice snap, bramble and sweet tobacco accents. A long echo of singed alder permeates on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2034. 2,250 cases made. (James Molesworth)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Old Hill Heritage Wine is sensational. What a wine. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2021 is seamless, nuanced and just insanely complete from the very first taste. Absolutely nothing is out of place. Yields were very low, which seems to have simply concentrated the black cherry and plum flavors and ripened the tannins perfectly, all while maintaining the bright acid profile that is such a signature of this historic field blend site. The 2021 is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Bedrock. It is destined to become a classic. (Antonio Galloni)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023 Potent yet detailed, layered with deep blackberry, grilled anise, pepper, clove and other dusky spices that build power and richness toward broad-shouldered tannins. Approachable now but will be better in a few years. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2024 through 2031. (Tim Fish)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 21, 2020 A wine that always delivers, the 2018 Geyserville from Ridge comes all from a single vineyard in the Alexander Valley and checks in as 68% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 10% Petite Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. It has a big, cedary bouquet of red and black plums, sandalwood, potpourri, and Asian spices that develops and fills out nicely with time in the glass. This carries to a more medium-bodied Zinfandel that has wonderful purity of fruit, present yet ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. This structured yet ethereal example of this cuvée ranks with the finest vintages to date. Drink it any time over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020 Robust yet brooding, with multilayered black plum, licorice and Asian five-spice powder flavors that build richness toward big, briary tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2022 through 2030. 10,500 cases made.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There’s plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There’s a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine’s nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here. (Antonio Galloni)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023 Bold and brooding, this Zin-based blend is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2024 through 2032. 800 cases made. (Tim Fish)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard is a gorgeous, wonderfully complete wine that shows why this site is so highly regarded. Red berry fruit, rose petal, leather, blood orange and spice open in a bouquet that is so compelling. Silky tannins wrap around a huge core of fruit as the Carlisle envelops every corner of the palate. Deep, layered and beautifully persistent, the Carlisle is wonderfully vivid from the very first taste. I loved it.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Impressively structured and richly styled, this vibrant version opens to deep raspberry and cherry flavors laced with licorice, sage and mint, building toward broad-shouldered tannins. Drink now through 2030. 696 cases made.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 A bright, fresh mix of chocolate-covered cherry, dried raspberry and plum notes show clove, toffee and espresso accents, with thick, appealing tannins pulling everything into focus. Sangiovese, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Grenache, Tannat, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2036. 41,185 cases made.
