Don’t miss a chance to buy a bottle if you find one. Moving to the 2018 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes, this beauty is cut from the same cloth as the Les Chailles yet is deeper and richer, with another level of concentration. Black and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, smoked game, and loads of spring flower notes define the bouquet, and it has a vibrant, almost old school vibe that carries plenty of power yet still stays light and elegant on the palate. This beautiful, singular wine is open and enjoyable today, yet I wouldn’t be surprised to see it close down with a year or two of bottle age. It should see its 20th birthday in fine form. Medium to full-bodied, with good acidity and ripe tannins, it doesn’t have the sheer weight, richness, or girth of the Vieilles Fontaines, yet it’s certainly a more classic Cornas that will be approachable with just 3–4 years of bottle age yet evolve for twenty years if you’re so inclined. It’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated enough, yet it’s not overbearing or heavy; it’s just deliciously drinkable and will drink well for more than a decade. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it’s flawlessly balanced, has gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years or so. The 2018 is 59% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Viognier, aged 22 months in 50% new French oak. The full-on, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with decadent black and blue fruit preserves layers, framed by bright acidity and beautifully plush tannins, finishing long and spicy. Yum!VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2018 EABA is another impressive wine in this range. Ample and explosive in the glass, the 2018 hits the palate with masses of dark fruit, chocolate, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol. Bright savory accents from the 60% stems lend energy and freshness. EABA is mostly Bien Nacido fruit, with dollops from White Hawk, Larner, Harrison-Clarke and Alta Mesa.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021 Another magical wine in the lineup, the 2019 No 8 is Syrah-based, with 9% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier. There should be a little over 800 cases produced, and it was 55% destemmed and is still resting in 65% new French oak. I love its freshness and elegance, and it’s one of those rare incredibly hedonistic yet seamless, weighty wines that does everything right. Pure cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, and white pepper slowly emerge on the nose, and it’s full-bodied, with perfect balance and a great, great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021 Deep purple-black in color, notes of stewed plums, ripe boysenberries and juicy blackberries charge out of the gate, followed by hints of root beer, smoked meats, black truffles and hoisin. The full-bodied palate has beautiful freshness with a provocative peppery note and bags of ripe, rich black fruits, finishing long and spicy. Due to be bottled in mid-August 2021, 850 cases and a few magnums will be made.
