Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022 A lively red, with briary wild berry, licorice and fruitcake spice flavors that linger on the snappy finish. Drink now through 2028. 3,450 cases made. (Tim Fish)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2019 The 2017 Petite Syrah Lytton Estate is another superb wine from Ridge’s Lytton ranch. Inky dark fruit and expressive savory notes infuse this bombastic, heady Petite with tremendous nuance and surprising freshness. The 2017 is very young at this stage, but it clearly has the structure to age. My impression is that it will be even better once some of the baby fat melts away. Even today, though, the 2017 is superb.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Feb 2020 The 2017 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate is comprised of 94% Petite Sirah and 6% Zinfandel, aged 12 months in 20% new American oak. Medium to deep ruby, it has a singular nose of candied cherry, violet, loamy earth and ash with white peach, potpourri, earth and oodles of black and blue brambly fruits at the core. Medium to full-bodied, it’s lushly fruited with a mineral vein, firm, chalky-textured tannins and good freshness, finishing long on a savory note.
