RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 From a vineyard planted with about 2% Viognier, the 2019 Syrah Peters Vineyard has a medium ruby-purple color and continually evolving aromas of Morello cherries, blueberries, dried herbs, lavender and bitter chocolate. The medium-bodied palate offers delicate, crunchy fruits with fine peppery accents, a pleasurable chewy texture and bursts of juicy acidity that drive the long, layered finish. (Erin Brooks)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts. It emerges from Roberts’ home vineyard in the Taylor Lane district that includes other notable vineyards such as Summa and Thieriot. The Que Syrah dazzles from the very first taste. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint and rose petals all soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. At times, the 2021 has a Pinot-like finesse, but the Syrah aromatics and structure are there, buried underneath the fruit. The 2021 is totally dialed in. It’s a magical wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 I also loved the 2019 Pinot Noir White Label. This is another classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, offering loads of framboise and ripe strawberry fruit intermixed with subtle spice, forest floor, and subtle herbal nuances. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it’s wonderfully balanced and has a silky, polished mouthfeel as well as a great finish. It’s another beautiful Pinot Noir that I suspect will have a good decade of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 William Foley grounded his wine empire in Sonoma County with the purchase of the Chalk Hill Estate in 2010. Michael Beaulac, who joined the team in 2021, produced this wine from other Foley family vineyards in Carneros, Chalk Hill and the Sonoma Coast. In it, he captures the chamomile character of chardonnay, showcasing the variety’s gentle fruit rather than its tropical ripeness. Scents of lemon cream and malt add to the wine’s richness.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Presents pear drop, Fuji apple, ripe Bartlett pear and lemon blossom details that are elegant and restrained, but they weave in and out on a light, fresh frame that’s quite impressive. Gains a savory element, thanks to a touch of toasted sesame seed. Drink now. 98,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jun 2023 The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was matured in 39% new oak for 15 months. The nose opens slowly from allspice and brown sugar to a core of red cherry and cranberry, tea leaves and lavender. The medium-bodied palate offers surprisingly concentrated fruit supported by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, and it has a long, spicy finish. (Erin Brooks)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2023 Both very well balanced and flavorful, this medium-bodied wine suggests red and black cherries backed by medium tannins for a good, appetizing grip in the texture. It’s a versatile wine for food pairings, and best through 2028. (Jim Gordon)
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jun 2023 The 2021 Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental is incredibly expressive and detailed! Its aromas open slowly from blueberry, rhubarb and cranberry to tones of bitter orange, amaro, mossy bark and lavender, continuing to reveal new accents with each return to the glass. Light-bodied, it floods the mouth with fragrant, detailed fruit supported by chalky tannins and focused, shimmery acidity that calls you in for another sip. It has a haunting finish loaded with spicy layers, and it’s very difficult to put this delicious wine down. Drink it now for its transparency and perfume, or allow it to develop savory complexity in bottle over the next decade. (Erin Brooks)
