Shop the Best Wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.

Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.

  1. Vérité Le Désir

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#55680

    JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
Lastly, the 2017 Le Desir is 80% Cabernet Franc, with the balance mostly Merlot mixed with a splash of Malbec. It has a wonderful Cabernet Franc floral character as well as awesome black raspberry, cedarwood, forest floor, violets, rose petals, new leather, and who knows what else. Incredibly complex, it takes lots of air to show at its best and is medium to full-bodied, has a bright spine of acidity, fabulous tannins, and a great, great finish. The elegance of this wine paired with its richness and depth is something to behold. It’s another damn near perfect wine from this estate, and to see this quality from a challenging vintage like 2017 boggles the mind. Hats off to the father-daughter team of Pierre and Hélène Seillan. Blended of 80% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot and 3% Malbec, the 2017 Le Désir has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It comes galloping out of the glass with all the grace and precision of a thoroughbred, sporting notions of kirsch, potpourri, warm plums and wild blueberries plus hints of chocolate box, cardamom and star anise. The medium-bodied palate (just 13.9% alcohol) is at once powerful and wonderfully elegant, with firm, very fine-grained, exquisitely ripe tannins and bold freshness supporting the red and blue fruit layers, finishing with incredible length and depth. Wow! 2,500 cases were made.

The 2017 Le Désir is off the charts fabulous and also one of the most compelling wines I have tasted from Vérité. Mocha, chocolate, licorice, leather, menthol, pine and spice soar out of the glass. The 2017 is vertical, heady and extravagantly rich yet not at all overdone, a hugely appealing combination in my book.

  2. Vérité Le Désir

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57152

    JD98+98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021
The Cabernet Franc blend of the trio, the 2018 Le Desir is 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and 6% Malbec, and as with all these wines, it was brought up in new barrels. Ruby/purple and not completely opaque, it offers up a classic Cabernet Franc nose of mostly red fruits, spring flowers, damp earth, cedary spices, and truffle. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shines for its incredible elegance and purity more than outright power, yet it still brings plenty of richness. With ultra-fine tannins, perfect balance, and one heck of a great finish, it’s another great, great wine from this estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jul 2021
Composed of 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and 6% Malbec, the 2018 Le Désir was aged for 16 months in 100% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little closed to begin, soon unfurling to offer glimpses at notes of kirsch, raspberry preserves and mulberry scents, plus hints of cedar chest, crushed rocks, bay leaves, Sichuan pepper and lavender with a waft of sandalwood. The medium to full-bodied palate has tons of freshness to support the melange of preserved red and black fruits, textured by grainy tannins, finishing with a lingering peppery kick. It may require just a little more time to come around than the La Joie and La Muse, and then I suspect this beauty is going to reward the patient.

Blackberry, violet and crushed stone on the nose. Pure fruit, but reserved and tensioned. Full-bodied with firm, tight tannins and a long finish. Some tightness. The tannins spread across the palate, so integrated and toned yet chewy. A structured and almost steely wine. 82% cabernet franc, 12% merlot and 6% malbec. Better after 2024.

  7. Walter Hansel Russian River Valley Chardonnay

    The Estate Vineyards
    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#60553

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Chardonnay The Estate Vineyard is gorgeous. Bright and effusive, with tons of energy, the 2021 Estate is lights out. There is a feeling of precision in the 2021 that is palpable. All the elements are so well balanced. Hints of tangerine oil, mint, dried flowers and chamomile open first, followed by a touch of reduction and then bright mineral accents that pull it all together. The Estate, from Stephen Hansel’s original vines, is exquisite. The price? Ridiculous. (Antonio Galloni)

  8. Walter Hansel The Meadows Vineyard Chardonnay

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51486

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The 2017 Chardonnay The Meadows Vineyard gives smoke and gunflint aromas to begin, with red apple skin, crushed shell, flaky pastry, white peach and white blossoms. The palate is medium to full-bodied, creamy and pleasantly weighty in the mouth with concentrated fruits, juicy freshness and a long, minerally finish. 544 cases produced.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2019
The 2017 Chardonnay The Meadows opens with lovely sweetness, creaminess and breadth, but it has plenty of supporting structure that becomes more apparent on the midpalate and finish. Dried flowers, chamomile, apricot and orchard fruit all meld in this silky, expansive Chardonnay. The 2017 The Meadows should drink well with minimal cellaring.

  9. Walter Hansel The Meadows Vineyard Chardonnay

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#55895

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Chardonnay The Meadows is creamy and ample in the glass, but shows the fresh, vibrant style that defines the vintage at Hansel. Lemon confit, spice, dried flowers and chamomile all take shape in the glass. Dry-farmed Chardonnay, all Hanzell clone, on the lowest-lying blocks of the property, yielded a Chardonnay with thick skins and notable intensity.

  10. Walter Hansel The North Slope Vineyard Chardonnay

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56858

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Chardonnay The North Slope Vineyard is creamy, open-knit and generous, as these wines tend to be. Apricot, mint, pineapple and passion fruit flesh out nicely, framed by soft, plush contours that add considerable appeal. The 2019 has softened quite a bit since I tasted it last year.

  12. Walter Hansel The South Slope Vineyard Pinot Noir

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#52441

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir South Slope (all Dijon clone 777) has a savory nose of toast, dried leaves, pipe tobacco, dried rose petals, amaro and tangerine peel with a core of blackberries and cranberries. The palate is medium-bodied and silky with fine, grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing long. 1,081 cases produced.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Hansel’s 2017 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard is a very pretty and expressive wine. Spice, game, earthy notes, licorice and dried cherry give the South Slope its distinctly savory personality. Pliant and juicy, the 2017 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Today, the fruit is a bit in the background, while earthier qualities are more present than they were last year.
