Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
SP95+95–98 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020 Youthfully balled up, but there’s a ton of gorgeous cassis, raspberry and plum fruit, all of it kept in check right now thanks to a bolt of iron as riveting as I’ve seen in this wine. Barrel samples are often easily impressive, but this is way more than that.—Non-blind Louis M. Martini vertical (July 2020). (James Molesworth)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 Martini’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard has the site’s characteristic mint and herbal overtones, but it also offers deep cassis and plum notes. Full-bodied, ripe but firm, with typical Cabernet Sauvignon varietal austerity and reserve, framed by fine-grained, silky tannins that linger on the finish, it’s a classic example of Monte Rosso Cabernet. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 5, 2018 The 2016 Zinfandel Angeli (96% Zinfandel, 2% Syrah, and 2% Petite Sirah) comes from Alexander Valley in the northern part of California. Its plum/purple color is followed by a rockingly good bouquet of spiced plums, cedar, sandalwood, and exotic spice. Medium to full-bodied, focused, elegant and seamless, with a silky texture, it’s very much in the style of the 2016 vintage. While already hard to resist, it should keep for 6–7 years. It’s a great value. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 Marietta’s 2016 Zinfandel Angeli is plush, deep, dense and beautifully textured. Expressive floral and spice notes add lift and nuance to this fresh, impeccably balanced Zinfandel. The purity of the fruit here is striking.
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2021 Chardonnay Russian River Valley lifts from the glass with white flowers, salted pineapple, and a touch of flinty reduction. The palate is fresh and rounded, with ripe green apple, lime zest, and honeydew melon rind. This is perfect for youthful drinking over the next five years. (Audrey Frick)
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 The 2012 La Muse, which is 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Malbec, is a smaller cuvée of 1,840 cases. The wine has plenty of spice box, cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake and Asian plum sauce, along with black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Ripe, round, full-bodied and opulent, this is a wine that can be drunk now or cellared for another three decades. Interestingly, the alcohol levels are not all that high in any of these wines, with most of them rarely exceeding 14.3%.ST94+94–97 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2014 Deep ruby. Wonderfully pure aromas and flavors of crushed cassis, minerals and exotic spices. Huge, sweet and plush but utterly primary for a wine with so much flesh. Boasts the chocolatey richness of a topnotch Pomerol from a great year, but the wine’s huge, ripe tannins will require at least five or six years of aging. Finishes with outstanding length.VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015 Mocha, chocolate, dark plums, smoke and cloves are some of the notes that inform the 2012 La Muse. Dark, sumptuous and impeccably balanced, the 2012 is super-impressive. The flavors are bold and intense, and while there is plenty of size and volume, the wine’s balance is simply impeccable. I imagine the 2012 will reward drinkers with a good 20 years or so of very fine drinking pleasure.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019 Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane has a broody nose of sliced blueberry, black cherry and warm blackberries with cinnamon, nutmeg, tree bark and amaro accents plus crushed red cherries, raspberry jam, warm strawberries and dried flowers. Medium-bodied and silky, it fans out in the mouth with lush, concentrated fruits and tons and tons of spicy and earthy accents, with a firm frame of grainy tannins and very juicy acidity, finishing very long and layered. 750 cases produced.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2019 The 2017 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane Vineyard is soft, creamy and voluptuous, all of which give it tremendous raciness and immediacy, especially for this wine and given its bottling just two weeks before I saw it. Ripe red cherry/raspberry, mint, chalk and floral notes abound. The Cahill Lane is surprisingly, shockingly open at this stage, not that that will be an issue of any kind.

VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a headspinning wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 captures all the pedigree of this great site. Readers will find a towering, statuesque Cabernet of the highest level. Graphite, leather, dried herbs, menthol and licorice play off a core of intense, dark fruit. Potent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but, wow, what a wine. Best of all, the Montecillo is one of the most insane values readers will find in elite California Cabernet Sauvignon. I would be thrilled to own it.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 One the brawnier wines in this range, the 2018 The Bedrock Heritage Wine is dense and powerful, as wines from this Sonoma Valley site so often are. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice, bay leaf and earthy tones add complexity as well as nuance. This virile, potent red is going to need a number of years to be at its very best, but it is already super-impressive. The field blend is approximately 75% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan and 5% Mataro, but includes a total of 27 varieties. (Antonio Galloni)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019 Heady, yet refined and polished, with boldly expressive black raspberry, orange peel and spice box flavors. This is full of additional nuances and builds toward big but fine-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 800 cases made.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021 Bold aromas of rose petal and orange blossom open to dynamic blackberry, licorice and smoked pepper flavors, building tension toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 750 cases made.VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a tough wine to read today. It is quite tannic and closed, but also does not appear to be quite as powerful or heavy as it can be, which in my view is a positive. Size and weight come so naturally at Bedrock that the wines can at times be a little too much of a good thing. I hope to have a chance to taste the 2019 again in the future, as it is in no mood to show its cards today. (Antonio Galloni)JD92+92+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 Coming from a site that was originally planted in the 1850s (the vines for this release date back to the 1890s), the 2019 The Bedrock Heritage offers a medium ruby/plum color as well as a beautifully complex nose of cherries, red plums, lavender, herbes de Provence, and pepper. Quite structured and tannic, it’s medium-bodied, has a rounded, layered texture, good acidity, and outstanding length. It’s a beautiful, complex, elegant wine that needs 2–3 years of bottle age and should have 10–12 years of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2016 The 2014 Carlisle Vineyard is one of the more structured, driving wines in the lineup. Today, my impression is of a tightly wound, powerful red that is going to need time to come together. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint are all pushed forward, but the 2014 needs time. The only question is how much. This is a distinctly red fruit-toned version of the Carlisle.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 From Mike Officer’s home vineyard, the 2014 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (planted in 1927) tips the scales at a whopping 14.9% alcohol, but hides it beneath a cascade of beautiful briary, raspberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It’s full-bodied, deliciously pure, ripe and a total hedonistic turn-on. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Cuvée Karatas is another fabulous white from Bedrock. This is the first year that includes Semillon from a Monte Rosso selection planted at Bedrock (68%) with Sauvignon Blanc from Judge and Uboldi (32%). If that sounds like a pretty appealing combination, well, it is. Rich, layered and light on its feet, the 2021 is dazzling. It’s one of the very best whites I have ever tasted from Bedrock. World class all the way. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 The 2018 Lorenzo’s Heritage Wine emerges from a block in Teldeschi, one of the most highly regarded sites in Dry Creek and Sonoma more broadly. Inky dark fruit, rose petal, mint and lavender are given an extra kick of energy by veins of bright acidity. Sumptuous and vibrant. the Lorenzo’s is positively stunning from the very first taste.
