Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Pagani Ranch is a beautiful, expressive wine from one of Sonoma Valley’s great sites. Rich, pliant and explosive, the 2021 possesses captivating inner perfume, vivid fruit and exceptional balance. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, mocha and a kiss of new oak all race across the palate. An alluring, captivating wine, the Pagani Ranch is total sensuality. As good as the 2021 is—and it is very good—it could have been legendary. That is especially evident when looking at wines from Bedrock and Old Hill, two of the other grand crus of this stretch of vineyards in Sonoma Valley. Unfortunately, this is the last Pagani Ranch for Bedrock. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is a total knock-out. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2019 possesses tremendous depth and textural elegance to burn. Citrus confit, white flowers, chamomile and light tropical notes lend an exotic flair to this striking, beautifully delineated Chardonnay from Hansel.
VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts. It emerges from Roberts’ home vineyard in the Taylor Lane district that includes other notable vineyards such as Summa and Thieriot. The Que Syrah dazzles from the very first taste. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint and rose petals all soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. At times, the 2021 has a Pinot-like finesse, but the Syrah aromatics and structure are there, buried underneath the fruit. The 2021 is totally dialed in. It’s a magical wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) offers up copious jammy dark fruit, espresso, chocolate, cloves, licorice and new leather. Juicy and flamboyant to the core, the 2019 will fit the bill for readers looking for an affordable, succulent Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21 Lush, toasty oak richness meets astringent tannins in this warm, spicy cabernet. As the wine opens, the green edge of the tannins turns into an asset, pointing up mineral notes, suggesting this will benefit from a year in the cellar.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2023 A structured and layered white with apple, light honey and acacia aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Creamy mouthfeel. Phenolic texture that runs through the wine. Flavorful yet subtle finish. Touch of flint and cedar. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Chardonnay Wester Reach is bright and nicely focused. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk and white pepper all lend tons of nuance. Vineyard sites are Flax, Cornerstone, Heintz, Lorenzo and El Diablo. There’s terrific energy and focus here. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 5, 2018 The 2016 Zinfandel Angeli (96% Zinfandel, 2% Syrah, and 2% Petite Sirah) comes from Alexander Valley in the northern part of California. Its plum/purple color is followed by a rockingly good bouquet of spiced plums, cedar, sandalwood, and exotic spice. Medium to full-bodied, focused, elegant and seamless, with a silky texture, it’s very much in the style of the 2016 vintage. While already hard to resist, it should keep for 6–7 years. It’s a great value. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 Marietta’s 2016 Zinfandel Angeli is plush, deep, dense and beautifully textured. Expressive floral and spice notes add lift and nuance to this fresh, impeccably balanced Zinfandel. The purity of the fruit here is striking.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a headspinning wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 captures all the pedigree of this great site. Readers will find a towering, statuesque Cabernet of the highest level. Graphite, leather, dried herbs, menthol and licorice play off a core of intense, dark fruit. Potent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but, wow, what a wine. Best of all, the Montecillo is one of the most insane values readers will find in elite California Cabernet Sauvignon. I would be thrilled to own it.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Cuvée Karatas is another fabulous white from Bedrock. This is the first year that includes Semillon from a Monte Rosso selection planted at Bedrock (68%) with Sauvignon Blanc from Judge and Uboldi (32%). If that sounds like a pretty appealing combination, well, it is. Rich, layered and light on its feet, the 2021 is dazzling. It’s one of the very best whites I have ever tasted from Bedrock. World class all the way. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 The 2018 Lorenzo’s Heritage Wine emerges from a block in Teldeschi, one of the most highly regarded sites in Dry Creek and Sonoma more broadly. Inky dark fruit, rose petal, mint and lavender are given an extra kick of energy by veins of bright acidity. Sumptuous and vibrant. the Lorenzo’s is positively stunning from the very first taste.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 Bedrock’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso, from one of the truly iconic vineyards in the United States, is fascinating to taste next to the Montecillo, as they are both hillside Cabernets. The Monte Rosso offers up a whole range of lifted, savory aromatics to play off its bright fruit. Blood orange, cinnamon, dried herbs and spice lend so much complexity and nuance. The 2018 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 A powerful, explosive wine, the 2019 Nervo Heritage Wine possesses tremendous energy right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, mint and spice lend striking aromatic nuance. The tannins are a big edgy at the moment, but time in bottle should take care of that. I imagine the 2019 will be positively stellar with a bit of bottle age.JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 The 2019 Nervo Ranch Heritage is an Alexander Valley release, and the vines here were planted in the late 1890s on a 30-degree slope of shale just outside the town of Geyserville. Lots of spice, herbes de Provence, mulled cherries, and licorice notes all emerge from this beauty, and it’s medium-bodied, with a lively, elegant texture, present tannins, and a good finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2018 Old Hill Heritage Wine is one of the many drop-dead gorgeous wines in the Bedrock range this year. The field blend of 30 varieties confers unusual complexity and nuance. Lavender, mint and sweet red cherry fruit develop, but it is the balance of power and finesse that I find most compelling. There are just so many layers of the Old Hill. Readers lucky enough to find it are in for a real treat.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.
