Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021 Juicy layers of berry and cherry are met by spicy acidity in this deliciously well-made, structured and highly enjoyable wine, grown in the plentiful, generous soils for which it is named. Dusty texture provides a grip that takes on a stone-like minerality and pleasing complexity. (Virginie Boone)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Pinot Noir Goldridge is a very pretty, delicate wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, spice and mint all grace this understated, nuanced Pinot Noir from Dehlinger. This is a decidedly gracious style. (Antonio Galloni)SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Fruity and open-textured, with luscious spiciness to the red cherry and berry flavors that are bound together by a creamy richness. Floral hints line the finish. Drink now through 2025. 945 cases made. (Kim Marcus)
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe is rich with aromas of mineral-rich earth, pine resin, Meyer lemon. and yellow apple. The palate is fleshy, with orange oil, a touch of savory richness, and stony mouthfeel. It is appealing and open now, but it will certainly hold on for 10 or more years. (Audrey Frick)RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe, from the El Diablo Vineyard and Lorenzo Vineyard, offers an incredible combination of concentrated flavors and energetic acidity. It has intense aromas of apricot and quince with nuances of elderflower, brioche, cashews and honey, pleasing, flinty reduction and classy new oak spices. The full-bodied palate explodes with layers of ripe fruits supported by a satiny texture and focused acidity, and it has a dynamic finish that segues from stone fruits to flowers and spicy accents. Wow! About 1,000 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Martini clone from the core of the estate. A heady, ample wine, the 2019 is endowed with striking opulence. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha shows tremendous depth. Attractive floral notes emerge with a bit of aeration, adding brightness. The contours are remarkably soft for a young mountain Cabernet. These wines age beautifully, their youthful opulence notwithstanding, so I would not be in a rush here. (Antonio Galloni)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022 Alluring, with steeped plum and cassis notes cruising through, backed by lively licorice snap, bramble and sweet tobacco accents. A long echo of singed alder permeates on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2034. 2,250 cases made. (James Molesworth)
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2021 A hint of stemmy earthiness leads the way to a luxurious, expansive and velvety palate. The acidity is edgy and fresh, lifting the savory and floral components over a rich, complex berry core. (Virginie Boone)RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021 Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley opens with savory scents of cranberry sauce, rhubarb, cherries and violet perfume with earthy and meaty touches. The medium-bodied palate is lushly fruited with a grainy texture, juicy freshness and long, spicy finish. 5,200 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 Leading off a slew of Pinot Noirs, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley reveals a healthy ruby color as well as terrific raspberry and cherry fruits, medium-bodied richness, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, present yet light tannins, and a good finish. It’s charming, and while it drops off slightly on the finish, it’s balanced and satisfying. It should have 7–8 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley opens with savory scents of cranberry sauce, rhubarb, cherries and violet perfume with earthy and meaty touches. RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc l’Apres Midi includes a tiny proportion of Sémillon. Picked very ripe and barrel fermented in about 20% new French oak, but with the malolactic fermentation blocked, it’s a full-bodied creamy-textured white wine, with notes of ripe fig and melon accented by grassier notes, lime zest and hints of struck flint and crushed stone. I prefer this style of wine on the young side, so I’d suggest drinking it over the next couple of years.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Old Hill Heritage Wine is sensational. What a wine. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2021 is seamless, nuanced and just insanely complete from the very first taste. Absolutely nothing is out of place. Yields were very low, which seems to have simply concentrated the black cherry and plum flavors and ripened the tannins perfectly, all while maintaining the bright acid profile that is such a signature of this historic field blend site. The 2021 is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Bedrock. It is destined to become a classic. (Antonio Galloni)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023 Potent yet detailed, layered with deep blackberry, grilled anise, pepper, clove and other dusky spices that build power and richness toward broad-shouldered tannins. Approachable now but will be better in a few years. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2024 through 2031. (Tim Fish)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jul 2018 Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Zinfandel St. Peter’s Church Vineyard has a nose of raspberry pie, blueberry compote and preserved plums with underlying hints of scorched earth, Indian spices, tobacco and stewed tea. Big, concentrated and full-bodied in the mouth, it has a racy line and a lovely plush texture, finishing with a compelling herbal lift. 165 cases were made.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 21, 2020 A wine that always delivers, the 2018 Geyserville from Ridge comes all from a single vineyard in the Alexander Valley and checks in as 68% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 10% Petite Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. It has a big, cedary bouquet of red and black plums, sandalwood, potpourri, and Asian spices that develops and fills out nicely with time in the glass. This carries to a more medium-bodied Zinfandel that has wonderful purity of fruit, present yet ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. This structured yet ethereal example of this cuvée ranks with the finest vintages to date. Drink it any time over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020 Robust yet brooding, with multilayered black plum, licorice and Asian five-spice powder flavors that build richness toward big, briary tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2022 through 2030. 10,500 cases made.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There’s plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There’s a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine’s nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here. (Antonio Galloni)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023 Bold and brooding, this Zin-based blend is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2024 through 2032. 800 cases made. (Tim Fish)
VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts. It emerges from Roberts’ home vineyard in the Taylor Lane district that includes other notable vineyards such as Summa and Thieriot. The Que Syrah dazzles from the very first taste. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint and rose petals all soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. At times, the 2021 has a Pinot-like finesse, but the Syrah aromatics and structure are there, buried underneath the fruit. The 2021 is totally dialed in. It’s a magical wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. (Antonio Galloni)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022 Blending in 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, this elegant wine displays the great conditions of the vintage, allowing blackberry fruit, fig, cedar and a note of dark chocolate to mingle over a medium-bodied palate of refined tannin and oak. (Virginie Boone)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022 A delicious, savory cabernet with aromas and flavors of dried flowers and cherries. Medium body with round, creamy tannins. Savory and flavorful. Supple. Real cabernet character. Delicious now.RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 With 180,000 cases produced and a price tag under $25 (savvy shoppers will be able to find it under $20), consumers shouldn’t overlook Martini’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County, which comes largely from the Gallo-owned properties of Frei Ranch (39%) and Barrel Creek (34%). It offers up bright cassis notes on the nose, plus hints of boysenberry and cherry, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and softly dusty on the finish. While it’s less rich and complex than many more expensive Cabernets from Napa and Sonoma, it’s a solid, fruit-forward wine that most readers should find affordable. (Joe Czerwinski)SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Direct and solid, with a core of black currant and plum fruit laced liberally with roasted tobacco leaf and vanilla accents. Drink now through 2024. 180,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
