Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Deeply structured and briary, with a mix of red and black fruit accented by licorice, dill and savory underbrush flavors. Finishes with medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 8,900 cases made.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - May 2022 The 2020 Geyserville is quite soft in this vintage. Bright red-fleshed fruit, crushed flowers, cedar, spice and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this mid-weight edition of Geyserville. All things considered, the 2020 is nicely done.
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe is rich with aromas of mineral-rich earth, pine resin, Meyer lemon. and yellow apple. The palate is fleshy, with orange oil, a touch of savory richness, and stony mouthfeel. It is appealing and open now, but it will certainly hold on for 10 or more years. (Audrey Frick)RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe, from the El Diablo Vineyard and Lorenzo Vineyard, offers an incredible combination of concentrated flavors and energetic acidity. It has intense aromas of apricot and quince with nuances of elderflower, brioche, cashews and honey, pleasing, flinty reduction and classy new oak spices. The full-bodied palate explodes with layers of ripe fruits supported by a satiny texture and focused acidity, and it has a dynamic finish that segues from stone fruits to flowers and spicy accents. Wow! About 1,000 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc l’Apres Midi includes a tiny proportion of Sémillon. Picked very ripe and barrel fermented in about 20% new French oak, but with the malolactic fermentation blocked, it’s a full-bodied creamy-textured white wine, with notes of ripe fig and melon accented by grassier notes, lime zest and hints of struck flint and crushed stone. I prefer this style of wine on the young side, so I’d suggest drinking it over the next couple of years.
WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022 Spicy, high-toned and strong in tannin, this is an impressive wine in its youth that will only get better. Cardamon, rose petal, black tea and tree bark give it a savory edginess that appeals and adds to the overall complexity and measured weight, finishing bright and fresh. Enjoy best 2030–2035. (Virginie Boone)RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach is one of Dumol’s larger cuvées, and production was normal despite the challenges of the vintage (3,750 cases). It has alluring purity on the nose, with scents of cranberries, rhubarb, tobacco leaves, orange peel and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated and powerful without losing detail, framed by powdery tannins and refreshing acidity. It offers an array of spice and floral accents on the finish. Lovely! (Erin Brooks)JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach has a rich perfume of black cherry cola, sassafras, and sweet violets. The palate is full and ripe, with black raspberry as well as ripe tannins and a note of black tea. Drink over the next 15 or more years. (Audrey Frick)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022 Delivers a core of gently mulled blood orange and pomegranate, with anise and singed vanilla on the finish. Features a light echo of wood spice, too. A juicy, open, crowd-pleaser style. Drink now through 2025. 3,814 cases made. (James Molesworth)VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint and rose petal are some of the notes that grace this airy, delicate Pinot from DuMOL.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Offers plum cake and black cherry compote notes, with cocoa accents. Easy, polished finish. Drink now through 2024. 170,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is ripe with fresh berries, raspberry preserve, and baking spice. Its gushy fruit up front gives way to a note of raspberry seed and refreshing lift on the finish. Drink 2023–2032. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is a charming, seductive wine. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Succulent red/purplish fruit, mint, blood orange, sage and rose petal lend quite a bit of immediacy, while silky tannins wrap it all together in style. The 2020 is an unusually restrained Papera, but its balance is beyond reproach. A few hours of aeration are hugely beneficial. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Dutton-Jentoft is packed with medicinal herbs, forested earth, and red plum. The palate is tangy and full of tension, with cranberry and rocky earth. With its driven acidity, this is a wine that commands to have food at the table. Drink 2024–2039. (Audrey Frick)RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Ryan Jentoft Vineyard has a medium ruby color and dynamic, spicy accents—cardamom, violet, conifer and licorice—to complement a deep core of pomegranate and rhubarb. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated, layered and ultra spicy, with a long, very fragrant finish. (Erin Brooks)VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Ryan Dutton-Jentoft Vineyard is a standout. It possesses terrific richness and vibrancy, all in a forward, yet mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. Sweet dark cherry, plum, lavender, mint and cinnamon meld together effortlessly. The purity of the flavors is really quite striking. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard is resinous with pine, forested earth, and kirsch. The palate has another gear of intensity and is full with ripe tannins and a long finish. The palate gives way to cherry pit, rocky soil, and spice. Hold for a few years and drink over the following 15 or more years. (Audrey Frick)RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 Medium ruby-purple, the 2020 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard is fragrant and floral, with blueberry, cranberry and pomegranate fruit and wafts of dried violet and tangerine peel. The medium-bodied palate is surprisingly concentrated with ripe, fragrant fruit. It has a grainy, refreshing frame and a long finish loaded with floral perfume. So expressive! (Erin Brooks)
