Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Dark in profile, with plum and maraschino cherry notes pumping through. While the fruit flavors are mixed with a noticeable dose of toast, this has the energy for balance, revealing licorice and apple wood accents on the finish. Drink now through 2027. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,003 cases made. (James Molesworth)Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Packs ripe, fleshy mango, peach and dried apricot flavors that show terrific focus and persistence, with details of pear, lemon zest, candied ginger and lemongrass. Shows impressive focus on the long finish, with a fresh thread of acidity that keeps the flavors lively and mouthwatering. Drink now. 10,780 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023 Floral and aromas take the lead in this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine that offers a soft mouth-feel and the roundness that comes from aging on the lees. Concentration in peaches melons and a good viscosity help the wine stand out. (Jim Gordon)
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 William Foley grounded his wine empire in Sonoma County with the purchase of the Chalk Hill Estate in 2010. Michael Beaulac, who joined the team in 2021, produced this wine from other Foley family vineyards in Carneros, Chalk Hill and the Sonoma Coast. In it, he captures the chamomile character of chardonnay, showcasing the variety’s gentle fruit rather than its tropical ripeness. Scents of lemon cream and malt add to the wine’s richness.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Presents pear drop, Fuji apple, ripe Bartlett pear and lemon blossom details that are elegant and restrained, but they weave in and out on a light, fresh frame that’s quite impressive. Gains a savory element, thanks to a touch of toasted sesame seed. Drink now. 98,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Pagani Ranch is a beautiful, expressive wine from one of Sonoma Valley’s great sites. Rich, pliant and explosive, the 2021 possesses captivating inner perfume, vivid fruit and exceptional balance. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, mocha and a kiss of new oak all race across the palate. An alluring, captivating wine, the Pagani Ranch is total sensuality. As good as the 2021 is—and it is very good—it could have been legendary. That is especially evident when looking at wines from Bedrock and Old Hill, two of the other grand crus of this stretch of vineyards in Sonoma Valley. Unfortunately, this is the last Pagani Ranch for Bedrock. (Antonio Galloni)

SP8585 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Offers notes of plum preserves and cherry clafoutis that glide through, with sweet toast around the edges. The soft, easy finish lacks some form. Drink now. 9,356 cases made. (James Molesworth)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Old Hill Heritage Wine is sensational. What a wine. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2021 is seamless, nuanced and just insanely complete from the very first taste. Absolutely nothing is out of place. Yields were very low, which seems to have simply concentrated the black cherry and plum flavors and ripened the tannins perfectly, all while maintaining the bright acid profile that is such a signature of this historic field blend site. The 2021 is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Bedrock. It is destined to become a classic. (Antonio Galloni)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023 Potent yet detailed, layered with deep blackberry, grilled anise, pepper, clove and other dusky spices that build power and richness toward broad-shouldered tannins. Approachable now but will be better in a few years. Zinfandel, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2024 through 2031. (Tim Fish)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There’s plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There’s a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine’s nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here. (Antonio Galloni)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023 Bold and brooding, this Zin-based blend is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins. Hands off for now. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2024 through 2032. 800 cases made. (Tim Fish)
