Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Packs ripe, fleshy mango, peach and dried apricot flavors that show terrific focus and persistence, with details of pear, lemon zest, candied ginger and lemongrass. Shows impressive focus on the long finish, with a fresh thread of acidity that keeps the flavors lively and mouthwatering. Drink now. 10,780 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023 Floral and aromas take the lead in this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine that offers a soft mouth-feel and the roundness that comes from aging on the lees. Concentration in peaches melons and a good viscosity help the wine stand out. (Jim Gordon)
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 William Foley grounded his wine empire in Sonoma County with the purchase of the Chalk Hill Estate in 2010. Michael Beaulac, who joined the team in 2021, produced this wine from other Foley family vineyards in Carneros, Chalk Hill and the Sonoma Coast. In it, he captures the chamomile character of chardonnay, showcasing the variety’s gentle fruit rather than its tropical ripeness. Scents of lemon cream and malt add to the wine’s richness.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Presents pear drop, Fuji apple, ripe Bartlett pear and lemon blossom details that are elegant and restrained, but they weave in and out on a light, fresh frame that’s quite impressive. Gains a savory element, thanks to a touch of toasted sesame seed. Drink now. 98,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Deeply structured and briary, with a mix of red and black fruit accented by licorice, dill and savory underbrush flavors. Finishes with medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 8,900 cases made.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - May 2022 The 2020 Geyserville is quite soft in this vintage. Bright red-fleshed fruit, crushed flowers, cedar, spice and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this mid-weight edition of Geyserville. All things considered, the 2020 is nicely done.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Pagani Ranch is a beautiful, expressive wine from one of Sonoma Valley’s great sites. Rich, pliant and explosive, the 2021 possesses captivating inner perfume, vivid fruit and exceptional balance. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, mocha and a kiss of new oak all race across the palate. An alluring, captivating wine, the Pagani Ranch is total sensuality. As good as the 2021 is—and it is very good—it could have been legendary. That is especially evident when looking at wines from Bedrock and Old Hill, two of the other grand crus of this stretch of vineyards in Sonoma Valley. Unfortunately, this is the last Pagani Ranch for Bedrock. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 Moving to the reds, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley offers a medium ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful perfume of mulberries, black cherries, Asian spices, and roasted herbs. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it still brings plenty of fruit, with a great mid-palate and outstanding length on the finish. It’s common in 2019 for the Russian River Valley Pinots to show a beautiful sense of freshness and elegance, and this wine delivers those qualities in spades. It can be drunk any time over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Feb 2021 Medium ruby-purple, the 2019 Pinot Noir opens with broody cranberries and blackberries with touches of earth and charcuterie. The medium-bodied palate is a bit brighter than the nose would lead you to believe, with a grainy, fresh frame and gregarious, spicy fruits. It’s a pretty expression that combines powerful fruit with a lighter frame than might be expected from the Russian River Valley. 7,379 cases produced.JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, January 14, 2022 Pretty aromas of red cherries, ripe wild strawberries and rooibos tea. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-balanced acidity that keeps the sweet red and black-cherry character going throughout. Added notes of tobacco and vanilla stick come in. Drink now.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is super-expressive right out of the gate. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, spice and rose petal meld together. Supple and fruity, with tons of charm, the Russian River Pinot has a ton to offer. I would prefer to cellar it for a year or two, as the tannins need time to settle down.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 The deep purple/ruby-hued 2019 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch comes from a site in the Sonoma Valley and is 90% Zinfandel, 6% Petit Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. Red plums, blueberries, blood orange, and candied violet notes all emerge from this beauty, which is medium to full-bodied and offers an ultra-fine texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. This is one impressive, satisfying Zinfandel to enjoy over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022 Deeply structured but not weighty, showing black raspberry and blueberry flavors laced with bittersweet chocolate, green peppercorns and fruitcake spices that build tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2030. 3,990 cases made. (Tim Fish)

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2019 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is a total knock-out. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2019 possesses tremendous depth and textural elegance to burn. Citrus confit, white flowers, chamomile and light tropical notes lend an exotic flair to this striking, beautifully delineated Chardonnay from Hansel.
JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 11, 2022 Aromas of lemon curd, flint and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and a slightly nutty character. Flint and rounded citrus carry through onto the palate with a soft finish. Drink now. Screw cap.SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023 Offers plump marmalade, baked peach and butterscotch flavors that are focused and appealing, with generous spices on the smooth finish. Drink now. 166,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/22/2021 I also loved the 2019 Pinot Noir White Label. This is another classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, offering loads of framboise and ripe strawberry fruit intermixed with subtle spice, forest floor, and subtle herbal nuances. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it’s wonderfully balanced and has a silky, polished mouthfeel as well as a great finish. It’s another beautiful Pinot Noir that I suspect will have a good decade of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP8585 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 Offers notes of plum preserves and cherry clafoutis that glide through, with sweet toast around the edges. The soft, easy finish lacks some form. Drink now. 9,356 cases made. (James Molesworth)
