Sonoma County and Napa Valley are the most prestigious wine regions in California, with Sonoma County wines known for being more laid-back than their Napa counterparts. That's not to say that Sonoma County wines aren't wonderfully sophisticated, because they are.
Sonoma's cool, coastal climate makes much of it ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sharp, robust Zinfandels can also be produced in areas like Dry Creek Valley. Among the more famous Sonoma County wine producers are Benziger, Deloach, Gallo Family Vineyards and Simi Winery.
WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/22 The pungent, licorice-scented fruit of this wine is blanketed in smoky scents. Firm and structured, it needs cellar time to integrate.Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts. It emerges from Roberts’ home vineyard in the Taylor Lane district that includes other notable vineyards such as Summa and Thieriot. The Que Syrah dazzles from the very first taste. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint and rose petals all soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. At times, the 2021 has a Pinot-like finesse, but the Syrah aromatics and structure are there, buried underneath the fruit. The 2021 is totally dialed in. It’s a magical wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. (Antonio Galloni)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 From a vineyard planted with about 2% Viognier, the 2019 Syrah Peters Vineyard has a medium ruby-purple color and continually evolving aromas of Morello cherries, blueberries, dried herbs, lavender and bitter chocolate. The medium-bodied palate offers delicate, crunchy fruits with fine peppery accents, a pleasurable chewy texture and bursts of juicy acidity that drive the long, layered finish. (Erin Brooks)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Cleary Ranch captures all the coastal, cool-climate savoriness of the Petaluma Gap. Game, scorched earth, tobacco and black pepper are all woven into a core of dark red-fleshed fruit. Huge tannins, a combination of site and a vintage with low juice yields wrap it all together. This dense, concentrated Syrah needs a few years in bottle, although it is already stunning in its beauty. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - June 5, 2018 Checking in as a blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre, the 2016 The Integral has a touch of Cornas-like meatiness to go with sensational notes of blackberries, peppery herbs, bacon fat, and game. It’s rich, full-bodied, thrillingly textured and beautifully balanced. In short, don’t miss it! (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 The Integral, a blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre, opens with a stunning perfume of violets and roses over a core of crushed black plums and black cherries with a waft of black pepper. The palate is very big, concentrated and full-bodied with firm, rounded tannins and a refreshing lift, finishing very long and very perfumed. 519 cases produced.VN91+91–94 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 The 2016 Integral is 55% Syrah and 45% Mourvèdre. Vinification with 100% whole clusters of the Mourvèdre adds striking aromatic top notes. Rose petal, sage, mint and raspberry notes show terrific raciness in this flavorful, mid-weight red. The Integral is another arresting wine from Mike Officer.
