Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it’s flawlessly balanced, has gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years or so. The 2018 is 59% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Viognier, aged 22 months in 50% new French oak. Deep, musky, balsamic scents of currant, blackberry, cannabis, spices and dark chocolate; slightly high-toned. Nicely high-pitched yet plush and suave on the palate, conveying serious energy and vinosity to its currant, dark raspberry, spice, cocoa and menthol flavors. Real nobility of texture here, along with a captivating sweetness and a repeating high-toned suggestion. Builds slowly and lingers long on the finish, with the firm but refined tannins fully supported by fruit. Classy juice, especially considering the sizable Merlot percentage. And more sweet than savory. Incidentally, my two samples of the 2017 Ciel du Cheval Red Wine were too volatile and porty to recommend; both finished with drying tannins.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022 Weighing in at 14.8% alcohol, the 2017 Red Wine Ciel du Cheval blends equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc from this outstanding site on Red Mountain. On the nose, it develops creosote tones alongside red florals, wintergreen, cigar ash and suggestions of Asian spices that all take shape in the glass. The palate is seamless and soft, delivering rich red and dark fruit flavors alongside black licorice and a hint of menthol. Glorious to consume now, the 2017 Ciel du Cheval could easily be a 20-year wine.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Oct 2020 Dark ruby in color, the 2017 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is dark-fruited with juicy black plum, blackberry essence and dark cherry with hints of currants and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, the wine shows precision with an elegant frame and sturdy tannins, ending with a long-lingering, mineral finish with high-tone red fruits of dark, dusty cherry skin and red plum skin. This will drink fantastically for the next decade, but it won’t do you wrong if you open a bottle tomorrow. Bravo!

While obviously dense, the core remains very fresh, delivering serious minerality and a lengthy finish. Brilliant to consume even now, this has a long way to go in the cellar.

Gorgeous crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, lead pencil, and chocolate define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and has a great, great finish. A classically styled, structured, age-worthy beauty, it will benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and have 2–3 decades of overall longevity. Trust me, this will pass undetected in a blind lineup of top Bordeaux. Juicy, dusty and spicy aromas waft from the glass with succulent, floral notes that capture the nose. Spiced red cherries, potpourri and dusty black raspberry essences cartwheel with notions of lavender and rose hip before offering up delicate baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is initially subdued and grows in amplitude while offering a balanced structure with succulent tannins. The longer the wine sits on the palate, it increases in spiciness under the ripe, juicy dark red fruit tones. The Sorella continues to evolve in the mouth with persistence, lingering long, leaving behind flavors graphite, crème de cassis and black cherry skin. RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jul 2022 I’ve been tracking the increasing percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend of this iconic Tuscan wine. The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is made with 25% Cabernet Franc, with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. That this heat-resistant grape now makes up a quarter of the blend speaks to how vintners are gearing up to counter climate change. These are intelligent choices, and you can count on this wine to maintain that level of extreme elegance and intensity that it is known for (even when Merlot was a bigger part of the blend). Indeed, this is a new and improved Guado al Tasso with focused aromas of pencil shaving, white pepper and crushed stone that frame a rich core of black fruit. A fluttering of dried mint gives lift and power to the bouquet. This is a beautifully linear and powerful red blend. Deeply pitched spice, mocha and leather nuances meld into a core of plush dark fruit as the 2019 reveals its considerable charms. Like so many 2019s, Guado al Tasso is a wine more of energy and persistence than volume. Clean, bracing mineral notes linger on the sublime finish. The 2019 spent 18 months in barrel, 90% new. The wine matured in 8,000-liter French oak vats for three months. This feels really harmonious, serious, nuanced and elegant, with subtle aromas and great balance and length. 45,025 bottles produced. The wine’s silky mouthfeel is belied by tannins that are firm without being grippy. Flavors such as blackberry, blueberry gelato, cedar and thyme leave a lasting impression. Today, my impression is of a tightly wound, powerful red that is going to need time to come together. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint are all pushed forward, but the 2014 needs time. The only question is how much. This is a distinctly red fruit-toned version of the Carlisle.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 From Mike Officer’s home vineyard, the 2014 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (planted in 1927) tips the scales at a whopping 14.9% alcohol, but hides it beneath a cascade of beautiful briary, raspberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It’s full-bodied, deliciously pure, ripe and a total hedonistic turn-on. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.

Fruit is sourced from three vineyard sites at various points of the Etna volcanic cone that range from 450 to 800 meters above sea level. Uncork this wine two or three hours before serving.
