WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2012 A prodigious effort, the 2009 Vieilles Vignes from Grand Veneur includes a whopping 40% Mourvèdre in the blend (there’s also 10% Syrah, with the balance being Grenache), which no doubt accounts for its dark flavor profile. This is a full-bodied, lushly textured, expansive wine, with a finish that seems to go on forever. Approachable now, it should age well for 10–12 years at least.RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2010 The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (a cuvee that was first made in 2006) is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah, all aged in new oak casks. Despite all the new oak, its influence is marginal. Some toasty notes are present, but the wine is very full-bodied with extraordinarily intense aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, kirsch, lavender, licorice and hints of lead pencil shavings and smoke. Dense, full-bodied, tannic and super intense, this is a massive 2009 that begs for 4–5 years of cellaring. It should drink well for 20–25 years thereafter.
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019 Moving to the reds and starting with the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape (a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, and other permitted varieties), this wine has a terrific sense of purity and elegance in its black and blue fruits, sappy flowers, and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium-bodied, finesse-oriented wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length. This is a classic, traditional cuvée done brilliantly. While it has the upfront style of the vintage front and center, it’s still going to evolve beautifully on its balance and purity. While some may find it over the top, for me, it retains a sense of balance in the tension between the sense of ripeness and its delicate herbal nuances. It gives up sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, white flowers, graphite, candle wax, and spice. This rich, full-bodied, yet seamless Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a powerful, balanced style that’s going to keep for 15–20 years. It’s a gorgeous wine. This richer, full-bodied, meaty 2018 boasts a fabulous mid-palate as well as a complex nose of cured meats, toasted spices, peppery garrigue, loamy earth, blackcurrants, and blackberries. It certainly displays the more forward, seamless style of the vintage, yet still brings plenty of power and richness as well as length on the finish. It’s beautifully done yet unquestionably a more forward, approachable vintage for this cuvée. Give bottles 1–2 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15 years or so. It has the estate’s incredible ability to bring wonderful intensity and richness while staying graceful and seamless. Already perfumed, complex, and nuanced, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a silky, elegant texture, ripe yet nicely balanced tannins, and a great finish. It’s a wine that’s going to age on its balance and purity more so than power and richness. It’s going to pick up even more nuance with 4–6 years of bottle age and continue putting a smile on your face over the following 20 years. All Grenache sourced from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit and raised all in demi-muids, it sports a more ruby/purple hue that’s not completely opaque and has an incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth. graphite, ground pepper, and assorted cured meats. With an incredibly singular character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and carries incredible power and richness, yet it nevertheless still glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, ultra-fine tannins, and a remarkable sense of purity and elegance. This is another magical Grenache from this team. It’s going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and knock your socks off over the following 20 years or more.RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020 The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum — a 100% Grenache cuvée (from vines planted in 1905) matured in new demi-muids — looks to have the concentrated fruit to handle the oak better than the 2018. Dark and intense, it delivers waves of purple berries and black cherries, barely touched by vanilla and cedar. It’s full-bodied and rich, and although the wood tannins do leave an impression, it’s a gentle one relative to the wine’s overall profile. While it may not quite equal the near-perfect 2016, it’s close.
RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2012 There are 500 cases of the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve. At 16.4% natural alcohol, the pleasure police will no doubt suggest this wine is hot and out of balance. However, nothing could be further from the truth as there is not a trace of heat in this modern day legend in traditional Chateauneuf du Pape. Yields were under 20 hectoliters per hectare, and the vines utilized for the Reserve were planted in 1904. Virtually all Grenache with the balance probably including Syrah and Mourvedre, this is a field blend. An inky/purple color is accompanied by notes of raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. There is a sappy precision to its formidably endowed, massive mouthfeel. Sadly, this profound Chateauneuf du Pape is nearly impossible to find. It should evolve easily for 20–25 years.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014 The awesome 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve is at the top of the heap in the vintage, and is world-class stuff. Sharing lots of similarities to the Les Trois Sources (they come from similar terroirs), it has another level of concentration and density, with incredible liquid rock, blueberry, violets, licorice and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. A rock star on the palate, it has full-bodied power, perfect balance, a seamless, elegant texture and blockbuster mid-palate depth. Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines and pure sand soils, it’s a tour de force that will have two-plus decades of life.
