It’s all interwoven with chewy, firm tannins and stony minerality. The structure should hold it for another decade.WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2011 Exceptional concentration, structure and balance mark this 11-year old blend of Cab, Cinsault and Carignan that’s ripe with cassis and plums and a plume of smoke, earth and barnyard funk. Iijima)RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Feb 2010 The 2000 CHATEAU MUSAR is tight, bright and tannic, astringent on the finish, rustic and earthy, well laced with barnyard notes. Some will hate it. This, I think, will be the most divisive of the Musar reds reviewed this issue. It is a more or less an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, aged for one year in French oak and late released only in 2007. The crisp character makes it refreshing and delivers lingering flavors to the palate on the finish, but it also means there is not a lot of fleshiness here, the texture is not particularly caressing and it has a certain austerity that some will appreciate -- and many won’t. Yet, it evolved beautifully in the glass and I greatly admired its structure, which should guarantee its ability to age gracefully for a long while in the cellar. If you like the acidity and power, which may cause some to dismiss this as simply too rustic, the barnyard component will be where many people still get off the bus. I liked it more and more as it aired out and came together in the glass, although my love for it never quite equaled my admiration for its good intentions. I suspect many will not warm up to it, so this is certainly one of those times that the score here is a lot less important than the tasting note. Its ageworthiness gives me some optimism that it will come together with more time in the cellar, but it won’t shock me if it does not. It was entrancing at times and it certainly has an upside that few wines in this region have. Five years might do it a lot of good, but let’s be conservative at the moment. Others will be a lot happier with the ’02 Hochar or the ’01 Musar reviewed this issue. Drink now–2025.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2002 Dense ruby/purple colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scale, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca’s standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006–2025.SP92+92–94 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 15, 2002 [Barrel tasting] Tightly wound and unyielding. Lots of plum and raisiny character. Full-bodied, medium-sweet and very, very velvety, with lots of fruit and round tannins. Good grip. Very harmonious for Fonseca.WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2003 Voluptuous, warm and black, this wine follows a simple line even as it grows increasingly dynamic with air. The fruit is smooth and grapey, starting from a dark, stony scent of broken schist and then pouring out full and lithe. Smoky tannins, melding with the alcohol into a licorice ripeness, seem to brighten the finish, adding to the lift of the fruit. The natural simplicity of the balance should allow this to develop for decades.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2003 Bottled in late November, 2002, the 2000 has turned out to be a colossal example of Chateau Margaux that is tasting even better from bottle than it was from cask. Only 40% of the crop made it into this 2000 Margaux, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color to the rim as well as an extraordinarily promising nose of creme de cassis intermixed with white flowers, licorice, and hints of espresso and toasty oak. There is great intensity, compelling purity, a multi-layered, full-bodied palate, and a finish that goes on for nearly 70+ seconds. Bottled naturally, with no filtration, it is a monumental example of the elegance and power that symbolize this extraordinary vineyard. A tour de force in winemaking, many of my colleagues predicted, far earlier than me, that it would be the “wine of the vintage.” It is certainly one of the wines of the vintage, but there is plenty of competition, even at this lofty level of quality. Absolutely awesome! Anticipated maturity: 2012–2050.WE100100 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2003 If a wine can ever be perfect, this is as perfect as a wine can get. Right from the beginning this was the wine of the vintage, and nothing has changed. Margaux was the last of the first growths to be bottled because it just needed that extra time in barrel. The wine now has huge, intense black cherry and blackberry fruits, and marvelous tannins that are sweet and powerful. To finish, the magnificent Margaux perfume of sandalwood and ripe fruit dominates, leaving an impression of finesse and power.ST9898 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2003 Penetrating, highly perfumed aromas of sappy dark berries, violet and minerals; seems less oaky today than the ’01. Offers compelling mouthfilling concentration and perfume. A wine of great power and consistency, with a pungent minerality lingering on the palate-staining finish. This somehow doesn’t flag or grow narrower even after one swallows or sips. Makes the 2002 seem almost dry in comparison. Wine-of-the-vintage material.WS9898 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2003 Paul Pontallier happened upon the 2000 vintage at Margaux, having prepared the vines since 1983, and having gained a certain level of intimacy with their produce over the years. He doesn’t take credit for the particular balance of water retention in the soils at Margaux, for the light rains that refreshed the vines in August, though he can take some credit for knowing how to manage those vines and when to pick them. For without his history at the château, the 2000 vintage might have been merely great. But there’s something of his spirits in this wine, along with the essence of the Margaux vineyard, the glint of the soil and the grandeur of the building, which taken together will stop you in your tracks.SP95+95–100 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2001 [Barrel tasting] Black ruby in color, with violet and raspberry aromas and hints of currant and spices. Super, full-bodied, with thick, polished tannins. Should be chewy, and it is. But it remains fine and classy. Another 1995? I can’t give more than 100 points.
