Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It’s worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades. RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th May 2022 The 2021 Rosé (colloquially known as the Estate Rosé, although "Estate" is not on the label) is a blend of 53% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Chardonnay, plus Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir equally dividing the rest. It is near bone dry and comes in at 12.8% alcohol. This report shows a lot of erratic performances in pinks in the difficult 2021 vintage, but the stalwarts are basically getting it right. This is another fine performance in the “basic” Rosé this year, not missing a beat. It has elegance, persistence, good concentration, fine flavor and touch of complexity from the kitchen-sink blend. Under screw cap, this should also hold for a few years, but that’s not exactly the point here. As top pinks go, this is also very reasonably priced. Bargain hunters take note. This is never my favorite of the winery’s endless number of pinks, but it is arguably the best intersection of quality and price. For those who appreciate elegance, it is also one of the more understated. There were 31,500 cases produced.

The medium to full-bodied palate has a beautifully velvety texture and a racy backbone supporting the generous black and red berry layers, finishing earthy. Very impressive for this price point! It’s well worth seeking out and has a dense purple hue to go with classic Right Bank Merlot black cherry and black raspberry fruits, tobacco, cedarwood, and floral nuances. It spent 18 months in 60% new French oak. This is a beautiful, classic expression of this terroir, and its dense purple hue is followed by gorgeous black cherry and cassis fruits interwoven with ample tobacco leaf, cedary herbs, earth, truffle, and floral nuances. While 2018 was a hot, dry year (at the end of the season anyway), this shows a mix of cooler-climate, vibrant aromatics paired with a rich, concentrated, fresh style on the palate. It has plenty of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. A beautiful, elegant 2018, it’s going to need 5–7 years of bottle age and keep for 3–4 decades. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet silky and seamless on the palate, it doesn’t have the sheer weight and flesh of the 2015 and 2016 yet is flawlessly balanced, has terrific tannins, and a great finish. Its vivid purple color is followed by a great nose of blackcurrants, blueberries, tobacco leaf, chocolate, violets, and chocolate. Hitting the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, it has this wonderful sense of purity and elegance, a touch of chalky minerality, flawless balance, and a great finish. Infinitely seductive and exquisitely balanced, I struggle to remember an Andrew Will Champoux that was quite this delicious straight out of the gates, yet the wine clearly has the potential to evolve for two decades. Rich, heady and voluptuous, the 2018 is flat-out delicious today. I don’t expect the 2018 to be a long-term ager, but I doubt that is much of a concern for readers who buy it.

There is some strictness in the tannin, but the 2018 has filled out beautifully. The Cabernet Franc, 37% of the blend (very high for Nénin) speaks with a great deal of authority. Purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice all build in this striking, deep Pomerol. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years. It is an impressive wine, to be sure.
