WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/23 Alvaro Castro replanted his vines at Saes around the turn of the century, an east-facing vineyard in the foothills of the Serra da Estrella, where he and his daughter Maria grow touriga nacional, alfrocheiro, jaen and tinta pinheira for this blend. Fermented without added yeasts and aged in older oak barrels, this is among the most straightforward wines they make, and it showed beautifully in 2018: An elegant red with lovely richness, its melodramatic funk in control, its fruit in blossom—“red plum, violets and rose petals,” as panelist Bruno Almeida described it.RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2022 The 2018 Tinto Quinta de Saes is a blend of 30% each of Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro, plus 15% Tinta Roriz and 25% Jaen, aged for 18 months in more or less neutral French barriques. It comes in at 13% alcohol. This is from 28-year-old vines in Saes. Understated, elegant and expressive, this is a well-priced Tinto in the lineup that delivers some bang for the buck. Its main limitation is the structure. It’s built to drink now, not to age for a decade or more. That’s not to say it won’t hold nicely for several years, but this tastes great now and goes down easy. There won’t likely be any great reward to holding it a long time. In the meanwhile, it is serious and classic, not overly fruity or candied, like some at this end of the lineup can be. It should be a good choice for value in a restaurant. (Mark Squires)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2005 The Victoria Tawny exhibits a medium garnet color in addition to sweet, unctuous strawberry and cherry fruit. It is a blend of four grapes, Carina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Shiraz. This blend represents the newest bottled offerings from this Rutherglen producer, an area that produces spectacular fortifieds, especially the Muscats and Tokays (actually Muscadelle). Its freshness, good acidity, soaring aromatics, and unctuous flavors must be tasted to be believed.ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2009 Faded red color. Cherry and red currant scents, with complicating notes of dried flowers and baking spices. Rich pit fruit and cherry flavors are firmed by tangy acidity and pick up a lush caramel quality on the back end. Very sweet but there’s ample acidity here to keep thins in focus. The finish repeats the spice notes and lingers with good persistence.SP8686 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2002 Dark and juicy, with distinct earthy-gamy overtones to the coffee- and spice-scented cherry flavors, finishing moderately sweet. Drink now.WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2007 More of a murky garnet than truly tawny, this inexpensive Port-style wine features chocolate, plum and prune flavors and a supple, silky mouthfeel.
RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021 An 80-20 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu Vieilles Vignes is an excellent option for consumers who don’t want to spend the extra money for the Saurel family’s Gigondas bottlings. The garrigue on the nose is a bit more subtle than normal this year, with the bulk of the aromatics being super ripe cherries and berries. Full-bodied and intense, with a helping of firm tannins that keep the jamminess in check, it finishes dusty and savory, with ample length. This is a big wine, yet one I suspect will mature relatively quickly; drink it over the next 5–6 years.JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 The 2019 Plan De Dieu Vieilles Vignes has considerably more elegance and finesse compared to the richer, more opulent La Bouveau and gives up beautiful notes of black cherries, raspberries, flowers, and peppery garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, silky and just beautifully balanced, this is a no brainer Southern Rhône to enjoy over the coming 5–7 years as well. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022 Easygoing and enjoyable, this has pretty aromas of violet, eucalyptus and wild berry. The smooth palate boasts ripe raspberry, juicy black cherry and star anise accompanied by pliant, polished tannins. Drink through 2024. (Kerin O’Keefe)JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 11, 2021 Plenty of sour-cherry and floral aromas with hints of orange peel. It’s medium-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Very typical Chianti Classico. Drink now.SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Open and fluid, this red evokes blackberry and blueberry fruit, framed by earth and underbrush notes. There’s a solid structure, with bright acidity in tandem with dusty tannins. Sangiovese, Colorino and Pugnitello. Best from 2023 through 2030. 33,300 cases made, 11,400 cases imported.
RP89+89+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - The 2020 Dry Riesling comes in with eight grams of residual sugar, 9.5 of total acidity and 11.9% alcohol. This is listed as dry, but it is a friendly "Dry Riesling," closer to medium-dry. Fruity, with much exuberance in it is youth, this is pretty delicious. It finishes with more sugar and fruit than evident structure. From what I am seeing, this is a fairly typical profile in 2020—a little less energy up front and hints of richness. I suspect the exuberant profile will calm down a bit with a year of age, allowing this more opportunity to show off its good structure. For the moment, let’s be a little conservative, but I think this will be better in a year. No matter what, this is very nicely priced. There were 577 cases produced. (Mark Squires)
JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, February 6, 2023 A pretty pinot with sour cherries, strawberries and a fine herbal edge. Juicy, medium-bodied palate delivers some light cherry and red berries on the palate. Crunchy and concise with lots of fruit at the end. Drink now.
RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022 This red is a village wine from La Orotava. The 2019 7 Fuentes was produced with Listán Negro grapes with some 10% Castellana Negra from up to 25 different vineyards, mostly from the center and east of the valley where the grapes are mostly red, with vines ranging between 10 and 200 years old at altitudes of 300 to 700 meters on different soils, all volcanic but with more or less clay, silt and sand. It fermented with some 10% full clusters in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured for six months, 60% in concrete and 40% of the volume in used 500-liter oak barrels, then blended and kept in stainless steel for a further five months. It has moderate alcohol, 12.6%, and mellow acidity. It showcases the minerality of the Orotava reds, with telltale aromas of volcanic ash, black peppercorns and dry roses. It has complexity that goes beyond an entry-level red. This is a wine that overdelivers for the price asked, and it is highly recommended. To buy by the case. 42,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in May 2021; there are five different 6,300-liter lots from the same blend. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, September 6, 2022 A fresh and mineral vermentino with aromas of white pears, apples, sea breeze and white flowers. Medium-bodied, showing restraint and excellent freshness. Drink now.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2019 This blend of 66% Shiraz and 34% Cinsault smells ripe and juicy upfront, with aromas of blackberry, black plum and cherry. A lovely spicy overlay lends additional depth and interest, expressed through hits of mentholated herbs and bramble. The palate is smooth and supple, with well-integrated tannins that lend a soft structure and some lingering grip to the close.
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 Tasted out of bottle, the 2018 Côtes Catalanes Tessellae displays a spicy, complex style that carries vivid red and blue fruits, leather, licorice, tree bark, and peppery herbs aromas and flavors. Playing in the more medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it has solid purity of fruit, silky tannins, and a good finish. Enjoy this plump, pleasure-bent effort over the coming 3–4 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, September 6, 2021 A very pretty young red with ripe red berries and hints of white chocolate, fresh herbs and whole peppercorns. Medium-bodied with soft tannins. Fresh and fruity. Pleasant to drink now.VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2021 The 2020 Il Frappato di Vittoria shows a pretty translucent ruby color matched by a fresh bouquet of dusty roses, spice and sour melon. It’s soft in texture with a peppery twang to its tart cherry and raspberry fruits. This tapers off a bit short but clean and classically dry.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018 Named after the Garnacha in the village of Fitero where the grapes are sourced, the 2016 Corral de los Altos fermented in 5,000-liter stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for nine months. This is fresher than the 2015, but not as fresh as Malayeto, as this vineyard tends to have higher ripeness but really balanced and with tasty flavors. Quite impressive, it has finesse and juicy fruit. This is a large vineyard and they have purchased new plots in 2018, so they could produce more, or even select from the best parts of the vineyard for this single-vineyard bottling. 7,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2018.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021 A friendly, just off-dry style, offering a lively mix of green apple, lime and kiwi flavors laced with a subtle fennel frond note. Drink now. 6,162 cases made.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Feb 2014 The non-vintage Warrior Reserve is a more fruit-driven, less complex style of port. Big, full-bodied, muscular and rich with lots of red and black fruit, licorice, white chocolate and coffee notes, this beauty should keep for another decade.WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2006 Fresher in style than the Warrior of the ’90s, this blend is bright and vibrant, filled with luscious fruit inflected by the black pepper of schisty tannins. It’s like a small-scale vintage, beautifully balanced.SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2017 Forward and direct, with tasty blackberry and blueberry paste flavors, lined with a licorice snap thread. A hint of singed wood lines the finish, giving this a little extra range. Drink now. 10,300 cases imported.WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2015 This is a classic Reserve Ruby, full of berry fruits, juicy acidity and light tannins. Hints of dried fruits combine with red berries to give a wine that is stylish and dry in the Warre’s style.
