It has intense aromas of apricot and quince with nuances of elderflower, brioche, cashews and honey, pleasing, flinty reduction and classy new oak spices. The full-bodied palate explodes with layers of ripe fruits supported by a satiny texture and focused acidity, and it has a dynamic finish that segues from stone fruits to flowers and spicy accents. VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 Depicting a bucolic scene of the church in Boulay’s home of Chavignol along with a couple of goats—this is home to the cheese crottin de Chavignol — the 2021 Sancerre is a rich and impressive style that’s full of nectarine fruit. Vinified in barrel, there’s a roundness to Sauvignon’s normally angular edge and a hint of sweetness although Boulay insists it is fully dry. The white limestone soils provide the tender texture, but there’s a real sense of structural grip on the long finish. Delicious now but based on historic examples, will be even better in 10 years. At the end of the tasting Boulay mentioned the wines had been open for several days before my arrival, and I will endeavor to taste fresh samples. (Rebecca Gibb MW)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is deeply expressive, showing peppery red berries and pomegranate plus hints of tomato leaf and sage, reminding me of that moment you add fresh herbs to a just-finished ragù. This is pure silk on the palate, rich and pliant, as it slowly saturates the senses with mineral-laced red and hints of blue fruit. Intensely primary and licorice-tinged, it tapers off grippy and classically dry to lasting rosy florals. The 2017 is a bit like a tamed beast of a Brunello.

Racy and pliant, with terrific underlying structure, the 2019 is gorgeous today. Crème de cassis, lavender, cloves, mint and licorice add layers of nuance, but it is the wine’s forward, supple personality that carries the day. The 2019 is rich and deep, but not at all heavy.

Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha shows tremendous depth. Attractive floral notes emerge with a bit of aeration, adding brightness. The contours are remarkably soft for a young mountain Cabernet. These wines age beautifully, their youthful opulence notwithstanding, so I would not be in a rush here. Terrific energy and delineation here, and long and suave on the rising finish, where the dusty tannins are beautifully buffered by the wine’s material. A lovely showing, even if this very juicy wine is still a bit youthfully imploded. The nose opens to an expressive fruit core, highlighting juicy dark red fruit and spiced blackberry essence. Aromas of cinnamon-spiced dark cherries, sweet plums and a dusty minerality sway out of the glass with elements of an exotic floral bouquet. Full-bodied, the wine shows layers and a delineated, fresh frame with succulent tannins, offering a balanced structure across the mid-palate. The mouthfeel shows finesse with a purity of fruit before lingering with persistence, vibrancy and a subtle red spice reflection over the elongated finish. Brooding aromas of cherry, plum, mocha, graphite, cherry and herb lead to medium-bodied fruit flavors, backed by tart acidity and firm, grainy tannins. The structure is lovely. This bottling and the 2001 are the only Selección Especial versions of the 890 Gran Reserva that have been produced by La Rioja Alta.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 I tasted the 2005 Gran Reserva 890 again, and I liked it better this time than in my previous review, even if I normally like the Gran Reserva 904 better than this bottling, as I find it better balanced. I tend to feel less energy in this wine, as it spends a very long time in barrel, six years in this case. 2005 was an excellent vintage, and they implemented some improvements in the harvest, introducing 350-kilo boxes and refrigerated transport to the winery, which they think provides better grapes and potentially better quality of the wines. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins have mostly melted, and it has lively acidity that lift the wine up. This is a very classical and polished Rioja. 57,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2012.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2018 Cedar and sandalwood aromas give way to flavors of tea, tobacco, dried cherry, forest floor and orange peel in this expressive red. RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc l’Apres Midi includes a tiny proportion of Sémillon. Picked very ripe and barrel fermented in about 20% new French oak, but with the malolactic fermentation blocked, it’s a full-bodied creamy-textured white wine, with notes of ripe fig and melon accented by grassier notes, lime zest and hints of struck flint and crushed stone. I prefer this style of wine on the young side, so I’d suggest drinking it over the next couple of years.

Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and even a touch of minerality define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully textured on the palate. If it’s not as complex or rich as the very best Chardonnays California has to offer, it’s not that far behind, and the pricing and availability (6000 cases produced) remain reasonable for a wine of this quality. The medium to full-bodied palate gives up tons of juicy black and red berry flavors with great freshness and sturdy, grainy tannins, finishing earthy.
VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 Balsam herbs, cocoa and sweet white smoke give way to crushed black cherry and plum as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is elegance personified, silky, deep and round, yet delivering a core of saline-minerality that creates a savory sensation—umami, in a way—with masses of ripe red fruits and confectionary spices to contrast. The tannins are sweet and round, presenting a chiseled structure; yet it’s not forceful. This tapers off with a tart twang of sour wild berries under an air of lavender and violets. Wow; there is so much concentration and depth here, but also balance. In fact, there’s hardly a sign of this being from a difficult vintage. While I expect it will have a shorter life than an Uccelliera Brunello from a classic year, the 2017 should not be missed. The bouquet is up front and beautifully measured with lots of red and purple fruit definition followed by spice, tar and earthiness. What sets this wine apart in this hot and dry vintage is the mouthfeel. It delivers fiber, flesh and soft tannins. The alcohol is a bit much at 15% in this production of 28,666 bottles.
