RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Subtle hints of fresh pea shoots accent characteristic dark notes of roasted meat, espresso and black olives in the full-bodied 2018 Cote Rotie La Landonne. Rich, concentrated and velvety-textured, with ample length and plenty of ripe tannins on the finish, it should benefit from a decade or more of bottle age—once it gets there. It’s a brooding beast of a Cote Rotie that serious collectors will want to have in their cellars.JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/6/2022 The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is another wine that’s going to be up at the top of the scale, and all three of these 2018s will be candidates for perfection. Always the biggest, richest wine of the three flagships, it’s inky hued and has a primordial nose of blackberries, cassis, and currants fruits as well as huge ground pepper, cured meats, espresso, and underbrush. As Landonne as Landonne gets, it’s full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, masses of tannins, and is going to be just about immortal. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 The 2018 Cote Rotie La Mouline is immensely seductive, offering up enticing notes of floral potpourri and red berries on the nose. Those strawberries and raspberries persist onto the full-bodied palate and through the long, lush finish, buoyed by supple, creamy-textured tannins. This is the most complete, compelling vintage of La Mouline I’ve tasted.JD97+97–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 Scheduled to be bottled early in 2022, the 2018 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is a blockbuster of a wine offering full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, espresso, and violets. Coming from a steep, terraced, warmer terroir and fermented with 10% Viognier, it’s always the sexiest, more exotic, and seamless, as well as approachable, of the flagship releases. The 2018 will unquestionably pure a smile on your face as soon as it’s released, but it will ideally be given 7–8 years of bottle age and drunk over the following 30+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Dec 2012 Another perfect wine is the 2009 Cote Rotie La Turque. It possesses a slightly denser purple color than the opaque Cote Rotie La Mouline as well as notes of Asian spices, roasted meats, bouquet garni, spring flowers, camphor and truffles. It is a different expression of Syrah as this comes from the more iron-laden soils of the Cote Brune. Although never as aromatic, precocious or enjoyable as La Mouline is in its youth, La Turque is, nevertheless, a remarkably concentrated, profound wine that is built like a skyscraper. It possesses a level of intensity and richness that must be tasted to be believed. Despite the flamboyant personality of the vintage, the 2009 will require 4–5 years of cellaring and should age effortlessly for 25–30 years.SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2013 A pure, unadulterated raspberry confiture aroma and flavor is the dominant note today in this deep and expressive red, with extra singed anise, alder, juniper and black currant notes filling in the background, followed by a very dense yet supremely polished finish. Features the weight and density of this fleshy vintage, but the fruit is so inviting this is almost approachable now. Better to wait though. Best from 2015 through 2035. 400 cases made.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Turque offers meatier, more savory, mineral-driven aromatics yet has an incredible core of pure cassis and darker fruits. A straight-up massive wine, it has a stacked mid-palate, terrific freshness, and again, a purity of fruit that’s just off the chart. Despite its overall size and richness, it’s weightless and as graceful as a ballerina. It always needs more time to come around compared to the La Mouline and generally starts to drink beautifully a decade after the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP94+94–96+? pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Shut down tight on this occasion, the dark, impenetrable 2018 Cote Rotie La Turque is clearly dense and packed with potential. Cedary notes, dark, concentrated fruit, potent tannins and a long, dusty finish suggest plenty of upside for the patient.
RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Dec 2012 Another perfect wine, the 2009 Hermitage Ex-Voto is surprisingly supple and more approachable than the two single vineyard 2009 Cote Roties, La Turque and La Landonne. The massive Ex-Voto boasts abundant notes of spring flowers, blackberries, cassis, licorice, graphite and forest floor. Extremely full-bodied with sweet tannin and levels of extravagance and flamboyance that are mind-boggling, it will drink well for 30+ years.SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2013 This has a distinctive singed mesquite note out front, along with sandalwood, black tea and juniper hints, followed by a very densely packed core of raspberry, plum and blackberry confiture flavors. The long, charcoal-studded finish has a great tug of roasted earth. Dynamic and expressive, this should cellar effortlessly. Best from 2015 through 2035. 656 cases made.ST9595 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Mar/Apr 2014 Dark purple. Seductive aromas of cassis, cherry compote and floral pastilles are lifted by peppery spices and smoky minerals. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, with a chewy texture to the vibrant blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors. Supple tannins come on late and are quickly absorbed into the wine’s dense fruit. Finishes on a smoky note, with outstanding clarity and lift and sweet, penetrating persistence. Stash this one away in a dark corner of the cellar and forget it for a long time.
SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014 This has lavish range, with intense steeped plum, anise, pain d’épices, singed apple wood and fruitcake notes layered together, framed by smoldering charcoal and sweet tobacco accents and riveted to a tarry spine. Expands like a fractal in the glass to display enormous depth and length. Features mouthwatering cut from start to finish despite the heft. An extremely impressive wine that will need some time to stretch out fully. Best from 2018 through 2040. 600 cases made.RP97+97–99 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2013 Most likely just as good, with additional freshness and focus, the 2010 Ermitage Ex-Voto offers up an incredibly pure, fresh and nuanced bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, crushed stone and spring flowers that flows to a full-bodied, detailed and yet gorgeously rich and textured palate. A serious barrel sample, with massive mid-palate depth and concentration, this beauty will require patience, yet should have an easy 3–4 decades of longevity.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/12/2019 The 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto is stunning, and comes closest in my mind to a mix of the 2015 and 2016. Showing more blue fruits, violets, chocolate, and a liquid rock-like minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, massive amounts of fruit, and building tannins. While the 2017 has more upfront exuberance, I love the purity, depth, and sheer class of the 2018. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 Still in barrel, the 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto continues to impress. Brown sugar notes accent cherries and raspberries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is lush and expansive, delivering waves of pleasure on the mid-palate before ending long and silky.
JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020 Built for the long haul, the 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc is a majestic, noble white that could only come from this incredible, south-facing hillside in Hermitage. Revealing a light gold hue as well as notes of quince, honeyed minerality, toasted spices, orange marmalade, and spring flowers, this deep, rich, and full-bodied white has absorbed just about every trace of its oak élevage and has a concentrated, rich, yet focused and lengthy style. This cuvée had a more oaky, opulent style in the past, but today it comes across as a much more pure, elegant wine while not giving an inch with regard to density, texture, and concentration. As with just about every top Hermitage Blanc today, this offers plenty of immediate pleasure with its pure, fresh, mineral-laced style. Don’t discount how much pleasure these wines can offer in their youth and always ignore the “always too young” crowd. This 2018 is going to evolve gracefully and drink brilliantly for 5–7 years, then (maybe) go into a closed, almost oxidative stage, only to emerge after 5–7 years and evolve for decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 The last time I saw the 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc, it came across as opulent and fruit-forward. Now that it’s in bottle (and scheduled to be released in February 2022), it’s less tropical, showing more restraint and (perhaps) greater aging potential. Hints of toasted grain, lime custard and scorched lemon zest appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is rich, delivering notes of toasted marshmallow and a heavily textured, slightly coarse texture, but finishes long.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014 A juicy, almost gutsy style, with a mix of raspberry coulis, plum paste and fig sauce notes, pushed from behind by lively briar and anise accents. The rich finish shows an ample wood component, presenting a singed juniper edge that adds range and texture. Drink now through 2022. 1,000 cases made.RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2014 Still in barrel, the 2011 Guigal St Joseph Vignes des Hospices is a gorgeous Syrah that has layers of creme de cassis, blackberry, licorice, toast, pepper and caramelized meat on both the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied, with the forward, sexy feel of the vintage, it’s a pleasure-bent Saint Joseph to drink over the coming 12–15 years.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 5, 2021 Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Chiara Boschis is a historic proponent of organic farming, and she lobbied to make the entire Cannubi cru a certified organic vineyard. Her 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows terrific balance and clean intensity in a vintage that presented quite a few challenges across the appellation due to the heat and drought, along with other issues such as an unexpected frost in April, but that caused the biggest damage to the lowest elevations. The Cannubi is less overtly fruity than the blended Via Nuova or the Mosconi. Instead, it has a more prominent saline imprint with mineral and crushed limestone. However, the quality of the tannins in this release is superior and silkier, and that added structure and focus give the Cannubi the longest drinking window in my opinion of these three new releases. 4,000 bottles were produced.VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine’s freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2017 Bright ruby. Precise, spicy aromas of ripe red berries, dark plum and violet accented by cumin and caraway seed. At once densely packed and broad but juicy and refined too, boasting terrific acid-fruit-tannin balance and penetrating red cherry, underbrush and sweet spice flavors. This lovely wine is suave and fine-grained and finishes very long. It would be prudent to decant this at least two-three hours ahead; one bottle I had was initially marred by almost unacceptable levels of funkiness, another was instead brilliantly pure and clean, so allowing this wine to breathe a little prior to serving is not a bad idea.WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2018 Made from biodynamic estate-grown grapes, this is a powerful, intense offering from an Abruzzo icon. A heady mix of Thai basil, anise seed and purple flowers meld within a dense wild berry core. The palate is broad and gripping in youthful tannins, yet plush with a thick-skinned dark berry tone, and speckled notes of herbs and game that linger on the extended finish. Drink 2022–2030.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2017 Appealing flavors of baked raspberry, orange zest, dried thyme and coffee liqueur ripple across the palate in this elegant, medium- to full-bodied red. Bright and harmonious, with creamy tannins and a subtle, lingering finish of tar and loamy earth notes. Drink now through 2030.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022 The 2015 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne opens slowly in the glass. Coaxing reveals an elegant mix of fresh mint, red currant, roses and a dusting of spice. It washes across the palate with beautiful finesse, lifted and fresh, showing no sign of its warm vintage origins. Sour cherry and hints of strawberry give way to a delicate web of fine tannin. The 2015 finishes with pretty licorice and pomegranate nuances, leaving behind a lightly structured sensation. What a pretty expression of Pepe Montepulciano, one that grows in volume the longer it spends in the glass. I foresee very good things here. Of note, the Pepe family was so happy with the balance of the 2015 that they decided to hold back 80% of the production for late release. (Eric Guido)
RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022 Drawn from three plots of old-vine Grenache (70- to 80-year-old vines), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis looks to be another fantastic example of this cuvée, bursting with cherries and raspberries and nuanced by delicate sprigs of garrigue and hints of roses and black tea. Medium to full-bodied and silken in texture on the palate, it finishes with tremendous length and subtly building tannins. It’s one 2020 that could take a few years to come around. (Joe Czerwinski)JD94+94–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis is the usual 100% Grenache that was brought up all in demi-muids. More dried strawberries, blackberries, loamy earth, spice, and hints of saddle leather emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, has ripe tannins, and is just a heavenly Grenache in the making. I don’t see it hitting the same heights as the 2007, but it’s certainly up with the top players of the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, December 28, 2022 Impressive aromas of fresh herbs from the Tuscan coast, such as sage, mint, rosemary and thyme. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins that show beautiful length and consistency. Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Give this about three or four years of bottle age. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023 This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot is exuberant and explosive. The 2020 Saffredi reveals a very ripe and rich interpretation of this iconic wine made by Elisabetta Geppetti and her family. The blend of fruit is the same, but 2020 actually sees less oak intervention to allow that dark fruit to shine through. There is blackberry, perfumed rose, dried apricot, spice and sweet cinnamon. In all, the wine offers immediate fruit and a vertical delivery of flavors. Finding that combination of wine versus oak is not easy, Elisabetta tells me. (Monica Larner)
