Owner David Duncan explained that the American oak they use in the wine for aging now comes 100% from their own barrel-making facilities, which tones down the vanilla character in the wine. The palate is fresh and vibrant right from the start, offering candied tart red fruit mixed with orange zest and citrus peel, wonderful definition and such vivacity on the finish that you will beg for another sip straight away. Might this surpass the Clos Saint-Jacques this year?

The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Gallimardes comes from one of the great sites in the southern part of the appellation and is just about all Grenache (there’s some very old vine Syrah, which struggles in this hot terroir). While not up to the out of this world 2016, it has a beautiful bouquet of cassis, kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, garrigue, and peppery herbs. Deep, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, it has ultra-fine tannins as well as loads of character. It’s going to drink brilliantly for 15 years or more. A 90-10 blend of Grenache and Syrah from the lieu-dit les Gallimardes, the Syrah spent a year in new oak, while the Grenache aged in tank. It’s full-bodied yet taut and racy, but it should relax in a couple of years and then drink well for at least a decade.

Showing the polished, elegant style of the estate, flawless balance, and a great, great finish, it’s going to keep for 30–40 years. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet with fantastic tension, the palate has a firm backbone of grainy tannins to support throughout the long, mineral-tinged finish. 500 cases were made.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is, for the first time, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the more reticent wines in this range, the Grand Vin is also going to need a bit of time to shed some of its tannic heft. Cedar, leather and spice add gorgeous aromatic complexity. Rich, brooding and quite powerful, the 2017 offers a lot of potential but it is not especially forthcoming today; that should not be an issue in time. Clearly, the pure Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is a bit of a stylistic departure from the past. All the 2017 needs is patience.

Chocolate, plum, cloves, new leather, licorice and spice build in a pliant, sumptuous Cabernet that will drink well right out of the gate. A year ago, the 2017 was massively tannic; today, it is much more suave and sensual, albeit with huge depth to back that up.

All the natural power of these parcels come through effortlessly. A bit intense now, its balance and freshness suggest good aging potential.

Soft contours and suave, silky tannins give the 2017 so much immediacy, but there is plenty of cellaring potential too. In a word: epic.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021 It’s not easy to wrap your head around the Castello dei Rampolla 2017 d’Alceo. The wine is exaggerated on almost every front, including its powerful tannins, shaped by a scorching hot and dry vintage that produced super concentrated fruit. I can’t say that this vintage is my style or that it delivers the extreme elegance and finesse that this estate at the heart of Panzano, one of the greatest growing sites in Italy, is capable of. However, there is a lot to be said about this blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot. The wine opens to an almost impenetrable appearance with inky black hues and unruly intensity. The power of the bouquet is driven by the ripeness of the fruit and perhaps a positive pinch of volatile acidity (just the right amount for emphasis) that adds extra lift and punch to the overall effect. Syrupy blackberry segues to smoky tar and resin. We saw impactful tannins in the 2016 Sammarco, but the 2017 d’Alceo takes that astringency one step further. The 2017 will sure take many years to reach harmony, although I suspect that the tannic imprint is here to stay.WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022 Underbrush, scorched earth and leather aromas mingle with camphor and whiffs of blue flower on this full-bodied red. It’s powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, and the tannins clamp down on the finish enough to warrant hiding this beauty in the cellar for a solid 5–7 years. If drinking today, give it an hour or two in a decanter. It’s another stunning wine from this estate.
