del Comune di La Morra 2016 / 750 ml. | Item#57444
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The Andrea Oberto 2016 Barolo del Comune di La Morra offers immediate aromas with floral intensity all backed by delicate tones of dark fruit, tar and licorice. Those floral tones recall rose, lavender and a touch of fragrant lilac. The wine is graceful, slender and enduring. It just keeps humming along with streamlined but focused intensity. Some 18,000 bottles were released.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2016 Barolo is fleshy, succulent and super-expressive, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, mint and rose petal all flesh out in the glass, while soft, silky tannins give this forward Barolo plenty of near and medium-term appeal. This is such a delicious wine.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018 The 2014 Barolo Margheria opens with beguiling, deep-pitched aromatics. Bright red cherry and plum fruit, licorice, anise, rose water and orange peel are some of the many notes that give the wine its personality. Bright, saline and sculpted in feel, the 2014 is going to need a few years to fully unwind, but it is unquestionably vibrant and expressive today. The 2014 spent three years in cask.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019 Savory, boasting lavender, juniper and mint aromas, yet there is sweet ripe cherry and plum fruit flavors for balance too. Builds to a long finish, where big tannins reign. Best from 2023 through 2043. 675 cases made.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2018 Here is a darker and more robust wine from Serralunga d’Alba where soils are heavier. They also show a greater presence of clay and limestone. The 2014 Barolo Margheria is made with fruit from 50-year-old vines and shows compact and dense aromatic intensity as a result. The bouquet is constructed on top of thick layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, balsam herb and crushed mineral. The 2014 mouthfeel, however, veers toward the lean and compact side of the Barolo spectrum.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 You can taste the softness and richness of the warm vintage in the 2015 Barolo Margheria. The wine offers dark fruit flavors and lots of rich, plump fruit at the back. This is a softly textured wine that can also be consumed in the near or medium term. This single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba ages in botti grandi for 36 months. The vines are 60 years old, and the soils are rich with limestone clay. Some 6,200 bottles were made.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 The 2015 Barolo Margheria shows the textural breadth of Serralunga in its compelling interplay of succulent, layered fruit and bright, soil-driven tones, with mineral inflections that add layers of complexity. Sage, tobacco, cedar, rose petal, menthol, anise and dried flowers fill out the wine’s frame effortlessly. All the elements are nicely balanced. In 2015 the Margheria is all class.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 Here is a wonderfully executed Barolo to applaud. The Azelia 2016 Barolo Margheria offers that classic twofold punch of power and elegance that is so nicely highlighted in wines from Serralunga d’Alba. For sure, the textural fiber of this wine is richer, denser and tighter than the others, and there is an attractive point of inner black fruit energy and tension that I did not find to the same extent in the Cerretta. If that wine is more focused on the base tones, this wine hits those high tones with better precision. The Margheria vines are 60 years old on average and planted in clayey and calcareous soils that render minerality to the wine. Some 6,100 bottles were rolled out.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2017 Another highlight in this range, the 2013 Barolo San Rocco is utterly beguiling. The bouquet alone is striking, but it is the wine’s total balance that is most appealing today. Tasted next to the Margheria, the San Rocco is deeper, darker and more overtly powerful, with a greater sense of Serralunga tannic clout. Dark cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices give the San Rocco much of its exotic personality. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood.RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2017 Azelia has hit it out of the ballpark with the three single-vineyard Barolos presented. The 2013 Barolo San Rocco is a rich and penetrating wine that keeps a sharp focus on balance and harmony all the while. This vineyard is located in Serralunga d’Alba, and the vines were planted in the early 1990s. The bouquet is robust and forthcoming with dark fruit, spice and cured leather. But ethereal notes of smoke, tar and licorice also lift delicately from the bouquet. You get both power and elegance with this cellar-worthy wine.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2016 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is powerful and structured. Its pedigree is evident. A wine of vertical depth and intensity, the Riserva impresses with its nuance and overall sense of transparency. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and licorice build into the wonderfully sculpted finish. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2017 Barolo Francia is dense, rich and explosive right out of the gate. There is virtually no feeling of tannin, as the creaminess of the fruit is so expansive. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, kirsch, sage and menthol gradually appear as the 2017 starts to open in the glass. In 2017, Francia is decidedly exotic, not to mention such a thrill to taste.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022 The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. (Antonio Galloni)SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2012 Offers depth and power, with menthol and wild herbs shading cherry and plum flavors. The balance tips toward the tannins in the end, yet this doesn’t feel overly astringent, just more structured than many wines of the vintage. Picks up a mineral element as this lingers on the finish. Needs time. Best from 2025 through 2043. 2,167 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021 Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d’Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. (Monica Larner)
VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2015 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is magical. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from Arione, so the 2015 is 80% Francia and 20% Arione. That marks a return to Monfortino as a multi-vineyard wine, which it mostly was until 1978, when the first Monfortino from Francia was made. The combination of sites works so well. I remember tasting the 2015 as separate components and seeing what exactly the Arione piece adds, and that is aromatic explosiveness, texture and breadth. Rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco and cedar lend complexity. More than anything else, though, I am blown away by how utterly delicious the 2015 is. Of course, the 2015 will be better in time, but its pedigree is plainly evident today. Roberto Conterno gave the 2015 just five years in cask, the shortest time in wood for any Monfortino in recent memory, maybe ever. Like most producers around the world, Conterno is thinking deeply about what the optimal period of time in oak is. As for the 2015, it is a flat-out stunner in every way.
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, September 3, 2020 The fruit feels so comfortable here, in the ripe-red zone; it ranges from cherry kernel to chocolate-coated red plums to glazed cherries. Integrated hints of bark and sandalwood. Full-bodied with strapping tannins and muscular, imposing structure and power. Notwithstanding, everything is in striking balance and delivered with remarkable precision and grit. Drink from 2026.RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The Damilano 2016 Barolo Cannubi shows depth and a profound nature. This is the DNA of the Cannubi cru, maybe the most celebrated in the appellation with mildly compact, well-draining sandy soils (actually, a mix of 45% sand, 35% silt and 20% clay, to be precise). These conditions contribute to the dark concentration and the firm textural support found here. These assets are particularly apparent in this classic vintage. Dark fruit and dried cherry cede to earthy truffle and licorice. Of these various single-vineyard expressions, the tight tannins on this Cannubi definitely suggest a long drinking window. This wine is my favorite in this flight from Damilano, and this vintage of 40,000 bottles is distinguished by its sheer excellence.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 5, 2021 Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Chiara Boschis is a historic proponent of organic farming, and she lobbied to make the entire Cannubi cru a certified organic vineyard. Her 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows terrific balance and clean intensity in a vintage that presented quite a few challenges across the appellation due to the heat and drought, along with other issues such as an unexpected frost in April, but that caused the biggest damage to the lowest elevations. The Cannubi is less overtly fruity than the blended Via Nuova or the Mosconi. Instead, it has a more prominent saline imprint with mineral and crushed limestone. However, the quality of the tannins in this release is superior and silkier, and that added structure and focus give the Cannubi the longest drinking window in my opinion of these three new releases. 4,000 bottles were produced.VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine’s freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70–80 years old, and is aged in barrique.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Made with organically grown clones of Michel and Lampia, the E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Mosconi softly presents bright berry aromas, raspberry, wild cherry, crushed limestone and delicate floral tones of lilacs and violets. Like other wines from this hot vintage, this expression from the Mosconi cru in Monforte d’Alba has that unique floral signature that is precious and unexpected. The wine shows great depth and balance with a pretty intensity that spreads over the palate. The tannins are dry with some dustiness, but the mouthfeel is spot-on in terms of length and polish. Some 9,000 bottles were crafted.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga).RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 This classic wine represents a traditional blend of sites including Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d’Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). The organic E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Via Nuova reveals ripe cherry and raspberry that greet you with a bright, fruit-forward bouquet. I feel the hot-vintage fruit ripeness more in this release than I did in the smaller releases of Mosconi or Cannubi. The wine is slender and elegant in terms of mouthfeel, with a good, polished feel and some subtle bite from the tannins on the close. There are some grassy notes and a spicy point of crushed black pepper as well. 13,000 bottles were produced.
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021 The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate has a slightly darker profile of licorice, black cherry, and wood spice. The palate is generous and structured, with plum pit, mineral-rich earth, and dried orange blossom. These are wines with incredible aromatic complexity and depth. Drink 2025–2050. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a dark, mysterious wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, licorice, spice, new leather and pine meld together in a super-classic expression of Ginestra. Deep, rich and enveloping, the 2017 is so impressive in the early going. Here, too, the finesse of the tannins is remarkable.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Soils in the Ginestra vineyard show more moisture-retaining clay in their composition, making them better positioned to handle hot and dry vintages such as this. The Elio Grasso 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté reveals soft concentration and extra richness; however, the aromatic nuances are well intact. I recall that the previous 2016 vintage took longer to come into focus, whereas this 2017 expression is open-knit and immediately accessible. The fruit is front and center, and the wine slides over the palate with a silky texture. Managing the tannins in 2017 was not easy, but this wine proves that lasting balance is not out of reach.
