The palate is full of energetic tension, balance, and purity, with apricot pit, tea leaf and saline minerality. An inspiring wine to close out the Vietti 2017 lineup. Drink 2025–2050. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. The message it communicates is one of elegance and finesse, and the mouthfeel is especially important to this bottle. A silky, almost glossy sheen sets up aromas of cassis, blueberry, wild cherry and crushed stone. These various elements literally glide or skate together in seamless harmony. This was a release of 7,560 bottles.

As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petal, chalk, blood orange and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is.

Crushed rocks, white pepper, flowers, orange zest, red berry fruit and bright acids all run through this finely sculpted, chiseled Barolo. Readers who enjoy Barolos of energy and tension will adore the Ravera. I have always had a soft spot for this Barolo. The 2019 is another magnificent dimension of Vietti’s dark horse, a wine that over the last 10–12 years has routinely challenged for the crown here, and often won! RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 This is the 13th edition that Vietti has come out with, over the span of 38 years, of this stunning Riserva, a wine that ultimately is produced only about once every four years or so. It was not made after the previous harvest, in 2011. The recent editions have been nothing short of spectacular, earning 100-point scores in both 2007 and 2009 and 99 points in its latest appearance, 2010. It’s a series that has set the bar extraordinarily high, and this 2012 Barolo Riserva Villero is a little less exciting in comparison. However, the wine holds its own as one of the most beautiful in the entire appellation and one of the best in the somewhat lackluster vintage. Balsamic and truffle notes pepper the palate of this handsome Barolo, but it’s just really hard to reproduce that magic, release after release, for a wine regularly expected to sell at several hundred dollars apiece. Some 3,300 bottles of this vintage were made.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jun 2019 Vietti’s 2012 Barolo Riserva Villero is absolutely gorgeous. In 2012, the Villero is especially lifted and aromatic, showing a distinctly floral and red-toned expression of fruit rather than the darker, more balsamic inflections that are typical of this Castiglione Falletto cru. Light on its feet, fresh and graceful to its core, the Villero is another terrific wine from Vietti in 2012. Veins of Villero tannin and bright acids give the wine energy, vibrancy and tons of character. More than anything else, though, the 2012 Villero is a very clear continuation of a stylistic evolution that can be traced to the 2010 Barolo Ravera in which the Barolos are now made in a more traditional style than in the past, which includes malolactic fermentation in cask rather than barrique. In 2012, that approach was not in place for all the Barolos, but it is very much evident here.

Wow! dense, powerful and richly constituted, the Villero captivates from the very first taste. The interplay of fruit density and structure is just captivating. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of exotic red fruit blood orange and floral overtones, along with huge swaths of tannin. Full-bodied, concentrated and full-on opulent in the mouth, the palate is laden with savory, earth and dark fruit layers with a velvety frame and lively lift on the long finish. 670 cases were made.VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018 Deep, saturated ruby. Captivating aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and menthol are complicated by a very ripe note of dark chocolate and lifted by a lovely violet element. Superripe, chocolatey and dense, conveying a youthfully medicinal quality to its black cherry and licorice flavors; aeration brought a subtle note of sesame paste. Finishes with huge, chewy tannins that dust the tongue and teeth. A bit youthfully brutal, this wine should evolve at a snail’s pace. The crop level here was just 2.4 tons per acre, according to Emerson. Incidentally, this was the first year in which the winery used Portacork’s ICON-certified corks utilizing NDtech technology to guarantee that corks do not have detectible levels of TCA. From an early harvest that was over by September 16.

Medium to full-bodied, the palate is taut and tightly wound, featuring muscular black fruits and a very firm, grainy texture, finishing long and mineral laced. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and incredibly elegant on the palate, it builds nicely with time in the glass and has ripe, yet present tannins, wonderful overall balance, and a great finish. Full-bodied, dense and focused with fine, well-integrated tannins, plenty of fruit flavor and an endless finish. A joy to drink even now, but this will age gracefully for many a year. (James Suckling)VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023 The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato is totally classic to the Zenato style, with macerated cherries, raisins, sweet herbs, cocoa, black pepper and shavings of cedar. This deeply textural with a dense wave of mineral-encased dark red fruits and balsamic spice carried across a core of stimulating acidity. Mocha and clove mix with black currant and olive as the 2017 finishes dramatically long and potent. There’s simply so much going on here, and more is guaranteed to come with maturation. Also of note is that the 2017 clocks in at only 3.3 grams of residual sugar. This is as serious as they come. (Eric Guido)
