As always, it’s 100% Grenache brought up in a mix of concrete tank and foudre. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a brilliant array of blueberries, violets, and pepper, and it’s full-bodied, has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. I’d put it up with the top handful of wines in the vintage. JD96+96–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 One of my favorite wines in the world, the Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis is all old vine Grenache from the Colombis lieu-dit located on the western side of the appellation. The 2019 sports a healthy ruby/purple color as well as a classic Grenache bouquet of black raspberries, herbes de Provence, peppery spice, and flowery incense. Already complex, it’s full-bodied, has a wonderful sense of purity, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This is power paired with elegance, and few wines do it so well. Expansive, mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berry preserve, incense, cola and garrigue qualities on the finely detailed nose. RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020 Another terrific effort from this estate, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina shares a sense of elegance with its vintage stablemate, the La Combe des Fous. Kirsch, stone fruit, black cherries, licorice, pomegranate… the list could go on and on. And while the wine is undeniably full-bodied, it doesn’t come across as heavy or hot, instead being built on a lacy, silky structure of fine tannins and rounded acids that linger on the finish.JD95+95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020 As always, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that saw the Grenache aged all in concrete tanks and the Mourvèdre new barrels. This richer, full-bodied, meaty 2018 boasts a fabulous mid-palate as well as a complex nose of cured meats, toasted spices, peppery garrigue, loamy earth, blackcurrants, and blackberries. It certainly displays the more forward, seamless style of the vintage, yet still brings plenty of power and richness as well as length on the finish. It’s beautifully done yet unquestionably a more forward, approachable vintage for this cuvée. Give bottles 1–2 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15 years or so. Based on 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, it shines for its elegance and purity, offering a wonderful core of red and black fruits, medium to full body, silky, incredibly polished tannins, flawless balance, and already complex notes of flowers, sappy garrigue, Provençal spice. It has the estate’s incredible ability to bring wonderful intensity and richness while staying graceful and seamless. Revealing a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a spectacular bouquet of peppery garrigue, smoked meats, blackcurrants, black cherries, and truffly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has no hard edges, with building tannins and another blockbuster of a finish. While this wine is always rich and powerful, it’s the level of elegance and purity that really sets it apart in this vintage. RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The 2019 Grenache Distenta I is composed of 76% Grenache, 9.3% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 2.4% Viognier. It was fermented with 43.5% whole clusters (predominantly Grenache) and matured for 23 months in 26.5% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, it explodes with scents of crushed blackberries and blueberries, tar, coffee beans, cracked pepper and thyme. The full-bodied palate has a frame of grainy tannins, seamless acidity and layer after layer of spicy and floral fruit. It has a latency that suggests it will continue to develop for many years in bottle. 1,536 cases and 600 magnums will be released in the spring of 2022. This 2019 is made almost entirely from estate fruit — just 15% comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. The rest of the fruit comes from estate vineyards The Third Twin (39%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (11%) and Molly Aïda (3%).JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021 Not yet bottled, the 2019 Grenache Ditenta 1 (which is the new name for the classic Grenache of the estate and means “unlabeled” in Latin) sports a dense purple hue as well as a flamboyant, exotic, complex nose of black raspberries, flowery incense, pepper, and spice. JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022 Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Grenache offers a slightly more floral and perfumed style, with kirsch liqueur, herbes de Provence, sandalwood, and licorice. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Grenache that has a seamless, layered texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It’s a more ethereal, perfumed, ultra-fine effort that will drink well for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 The 2019 Grenache is blended with 11% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah and 4% Graciano and was made using 65% whole clusters. Fruit comes from the Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, and the Alta Mesa Vineyard, Larner Vineyard and Harrison-Clarke Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was matured for about 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids and 50% used French barriques. Deep ruby in color, it opens with savory tones of tar and loamy earth that give way to potpourri, cinnamon stick, prosciutto and black cherries. The medium-bodied palate is bright and juicy with fragrant fruits, fine, grainy tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, latent, spicy finish hinting at further improvement in bottle. Bottled on August 21, 2021, and tasted May 25, 2022, it will be released to consumers in the summer of 2022. 395 cases and a few magnums are available; it will be packaged and sold as a three-bottle set ($330), while magnums will be offered as a box set with the 2019 Andremily EABA. RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022 Beaucastel’s 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is shaping up as a blend of 30% each Grenache and Mourvèdre, with 10% each Counoise and Syrah, plus 20% other permitted varieties, including a healthy proportion of white grapes. Complex and red-fruited, with hints of flowers and garrigue, it’s expansive and richly textured on the palate, finishing long and silky. (Joe Czerwinski)JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022 The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape was scheduled to be bottled the week after this tasting, and it’s the usual blend of 35% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Counoise, and other permitted varieties. While the estate compares this to their 2016, it reminds me slightly of their 1990 and has a wonderful perfume of red, blue, and black fruits, as well as sappy garrigue, saddle leather, and ground pepper. It’s beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, has a good sense of freshness, and fine tannins, as well as a tight, focused style on the palate that bodes well for longevity. It deserves 7–8 years of bottle age and should be long-lived. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD97+97–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is going to be one of the wines of the vintage. All Grenache sourced from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit and raised all in demi-muids, it sports a more ruby/purple hue that’s not completely opaque and has an incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth. graphite, ground pepper, and assorted cured meats. With an incredibly singular character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and carries incredible power and richness, yet it nevertheless still glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, ultra-fine tannins, and a remarkable sense of purity and elegance. This is another magical Grenache from this team. It’s going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and knock your socks off over the following 20 years or more.RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020 The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum — a 100% Grenache cuvée (from vines planted in 1905) matured in new demi-muids — looks to have the concentrated fruit to handle the oak better than the 2018. Dark and intense, it delivers waves of purple berries and black cherries, barely touched by vanilla and cedar. It’s full-bodied and rich, and although the wood tannins do leave an impression, it’s a gentle one relative to the wine’s overall profile. While it may not quite equal the near-perfect 2016, it’s close.
RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2012 There are 500 cases of the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve. At 16.4% natural alcohol, the pleasure police will no doubt suggest this wine is hot and out of balance. However, nothing could be further from the truth as there is not a trace of heat in this modern day legend in traditional Chateauneuf du Pape. Yields were under 20 hectoliters per hectare, and the vines utilized for the Reserve were planted in 1904. Virtually all Grenache with the balance probably including Syrah and Mourvedre, this is a field blend. An inky/purple color is accompanied by notes of raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. There is a sappy precision to its formidably endowed, massive mouthfeel. Sadly, this profound Chateauneuf du Pape is nearly impossible to find. It should evolve easily for 20–25 years.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014 The awesome 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve is at the top of the heap in the vintage, and is world-class stuff. Sharing lots of similarities to the Les Trois Sources (they come from similar terroirs), it has another level of concentration and density, with incredible liquid rock, blueberry, violets, licorice and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. A rock star on the palate, it has full-bodied power, perfect balance, a seamless, elegant texture and blockbuster mid-palate depth. Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines and pure sand soils, it’s a tour de force that will have two-plus decades of life.

The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Gallimardes comes from one of the great sites in the southern part of the appellation and is just about all Grenache (there’s some very old vine Syrah, which struggles in this hot terroir). While not up to the out of this world 2016, it has a beautiful bouquet of cassis, kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, garrigue, and peppery herbs. Deep, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, it has ultra-fine tannins as well as loads of character. It’s going to drink brilliantly for 15 years or more. Juicy, seamless and energetic on the palate; sweet red and blue fruit, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors display a suave marriage of power and finesse. Delivers a serious punch of flavor but comes off lithe. The floral and mineral qualities linger on a sappy, wonderfully long finish shaped by smooth tannins.RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019 More tightly coiled than last year, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes now seems more herbal than floral, with greenish streaks running through the crisp red berry fruit. A 90-10 blend of Grenache and Syrah from the lieu-dit les Gallimardes, the Syrah spent a year in new oak, while the Grenache aged in tank. It’s full-bodied yet taut and racy, but it should relax in a couple of years and then drink well for at least a decade.
