When it comes to Chardonnay, France (White Burgundy) and California lead the way, though with very different styles. The Chardonnay brands from Burgundy in France tend to be steely and mineral-inflected, while chardonnay brands from California rich, buttery, and often aged in oak (which adds its flavor to the wine). Both styles are immensely popular, and part of the reason that Chardonnay is the most popular white wine in the world.

Because Chardonnay takes so well to many climates, it's grown around the world, with other stellar examples hailing from Chile, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. It pairs best with seafood such as lobster and many white meats such as pork and poultry.

  1. Gilbert Picq et ses Fils Chablis Premier Cru Vosgros

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#60373

    VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022
The 2021 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru is the only cuvée with a normal yield (50hl/ha) as Didier warmed the vineyard with wax candles during the frost. It has a perfumed nose with hints of pressed white flowers and a light oyster shell tincture that emerges with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, perhaps the most saline of Picq’s cuvées with a long tail on the satisfying finish. Proper Chablis! (Neal Martin)

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58240

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2020 Mâcon-Bussières Le Monsard has a well-defined and quite lifted bouquet with lovely floral scents, buttercup and dandelion. The palate is well balanced with a sappy entry, orange rind and tangerine with a light spicy note towards the finish. Give this two to four years in bottle if you can. Closure: Diam. (Neal Martin)
    RP89+89+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Sep 2022
Offering up aromas of crisp orchard fruit, fresh melon, white flowers and wet stones framed by light reduction, the 2020 Mâcon-Bussière Le Monsard is medium-bodied, satiny and racy, with chalky structure and a tightly wound core. (William Kelley)

  6. Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56941

    WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21
When Mike Grgich made the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay—the white wine that won the Paris Tasting—he used fruit from the Bacigalupi Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. He soon moved into a partnership with Austin Hills, assembling an organically farmed estate that includes 88 acres in Carneros and 163 in American Canyon, the cool, southern districts of the Napa Valley where this chardonnay grows. Now, at 98, Grgich leaves winegrowing to his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, who produced this complex and compelling wine. Put aside any preconceptions you might have about contemporary Napa Valley chardonnay; consider instead an agriculture that might include native corn (one taster cited the ethereal sweetness of nixtamalized corn) and stone-fruit orchards (a scent of apricots). There’s the smokiness of ancho chile and a scent of woodland mushrooms in the wine’s dark-toned leesiness. Then the layers of flavor last, harmonious and delicious.

  10. Boundary Breaks Chardonnay Unoaked

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#56849

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2020 Chardonnay Unoaked is very dry and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. The winery described this as a ripe vintage, and this sure has some stuffing. Relatively full-bodied and chock-full of fruit — not always the norms for the Finger Lakes — this is delicious on the finish, with just enough acidity to support the fruit. I might yearn for a bit more power, but the rest here is pretty super. It will be interesting to see how this ages. It is well priced for the quality too. Sourced from 20-year-old vines, there were 400 cases produced.
