When it comes to Chardonnay, France (White Burgundy) and California lead the way, though with very different styles. The Chardonnay brands from Burgundy in France tend to be steely and mineral-inflected, while chardonnay brands from California rich, buttery, and often aged in oak (which adds its flavor to the wine). Both styles are immensely popular, and part of the reason that Chardonnay is the most popular white wine in the world.
Because Chardonnay takes so well to many climates, it's grown around the world, with other stellar examples hailing from Chile, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. It pairs best with seafood such as lobster and many white meats such as pork and poultry.

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022 Bright aromas of pear, star fruit and the underside of a pineapple lead to medium-weight, plentiful, crystal-clear stone and tropical-fruit flavors. It’s vivid, refreshing and juicy with a long finish—as good of an unoaked Chardonnay as I’ve had. (Sean P. Sullivan)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022 A dynamic white, with spirited lemon and lime flavors that sail on the crisp, vibrant and steely finish. Drink now. 9,100 cases made. (Tim Fish)JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2022 The 2021 Chardonnay INOX Unoaked is savory with tarragon, salty earth, and lime zest. The palate is fresh and inviting, offering notes of green apple, crushed stones, and citrus peel. A delicious wine with a Chablis-like application, it is a great value to drink over the next couple of years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022 This medium-bodied, barrel-fermented wine offers light, toasted oak aromas, attractive baked apple flavors and accents of butter and vanilla. Good balance keeps it going sip after sip, revealing spice and almond nuances.JD8888 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Vintner’s Reserve is a mosaic of classic expressions, with toasted brioche, lemon candy, vanilla bean, and baking spice. The palate is full of ripe baked pineapple turnover cake, sweet pear, and vanilla. Classic for a reason, drink now or over the next 6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2023 Creamy and finely knit, with vibrant acidity buoying flavors of ripe melon, pink grapefruit granita, grated ginger and blanched almond. The salty underpinning and a pretty floral note echo on the finish. Drink now through 2026. 20,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, January 24, 2022 Sliced pear, lemon, apple, apricot and crushed stones on the nose. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity and a fresh, mineral palate. Precise. Sustainable. Drink now. Screw cap.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Au Dessus des Carrières comes from two parcels planted mainly in the seventies. Vibrant again on the nose, this offers enticing scents of yellow plum, flint and subtle petrichor scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine depth, perhaps a little more linear than the Vieilles Vignes with a very focused finish. Excellent. Chablis like a Swiss watch! (Neal Martin)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022 Initially reductive notes of scorched earth and smoke in this wine dissipate with aeration, revealing pristine yellow apple and Mirabelle. Edged by a crush of oyster shells and salty mineral tones, this invigorating sip finishes on a whisper of white pepper. The wine is just starting to open now but should drink well through 2030. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2020 Chablis Vau de Vey 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with wild peach, light quince and flinty aromas, quite complex though I would not describe it as “intense”. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious, quite sappy towards the finish with decent length. Perhaps like the Butteaux, I would have liked a little more tension on the finish, but it should still give 8–10 years’ drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis. (Neal Martin)
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2021 Fresh and clean aromas of white-flower blossoms, lime juice and citrus peel show on the nose of this bottling. Broad melon and pome-fruit flavors show on the palate, which is quite salty as well.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 Although not labeled as such, Beringer’s Private Reserve Chardonnay has been sourced for decades from the Gamble Ranch in Oakville. Planted around 1976 to Clone 4, the grapes are picked ripe and barrel fermented at relatively warm temperatures to build mouthfeel. The 2020 Chardonnay Private Reserve (along with all the other white varieties) was picked prior to any risk of smoke taint. Marked by scents of mango, guava and pineapple, it doesn’t come across as that oaky, despite being barrel fermented and aged in approximately 80% new French oak. It’s full-bodied and slightly buttery, with an appealing custardy richness and a long finish. (Joe Czerwinski)SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022 Peach, apricot and mango flavors are juicy and fleshy at the core of this white, with honeyed overtones. Salted butter, spice and toasted pastry notes emerge on the finish, as does a touch of dried ginger. Drink now. 8,714 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Private Reserve is creamy, open-knit and expressive. Lemon confit, spice, vanillin and light tropical notes all grace the 2020. As always, the Private Reserve is done in a richer, creamier style than the Luminus Chardonnay. That approach worked well in 2020. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Sainte Claire was showing a little too much SO2 on the nose, although there seems to be decent fruit tucked behind. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite tensile and steely with a precise finish that deserves a round of applause. This is well-crafted. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis. (Neal Martin)
