When it comes to Chardonnay, France (White Burgundy) and California lead the way, though with very different styles. The Chardonnay brands from Burgundy in France tend to be steely and mineral-inflected, while chardonnay brands from California rich, buttery, and often aged in oak (which adds its flavor to the wine). Both styles are immensely popular, and part of the reason that Chardonnay is the most popular white wine in the world.
Because Chardonnay takes so well to many climates, it's grown around the world, with other stellar examples hailing from Chile, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. It pairs best with seafood such as lobster and many white meats such as pork and poultry.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022 Although not labeled as such, Beringer’s Private Reserve Chardonnay has been sourced for decades from the Gamble Ranch in Oakville. Planted around 1976 to Clone 4, the grapes are picked ripe and barrel fermented at relatively warm temperatures to build mouthfeel. The 2020 Chardonnay Private Reserve (along with all the other white varieties) was picked prior to any risk of smoke taint. Marked by scents of mango, guava and pineapple, it doesn’t come across as that oaky, despite being barrel fermented and aged in approximately 80% new French oak. It’s full-bodied and slightly buttery, with an appealing custardy richness and a long finish. (Joe Czerwinski)SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022 Peach, apricot and mango flavors are juicy and fleshy at the core of this white, with honeyed overtones. Salted butter, spice and toasted pastry notes emerge on the finish, as does a touch of dried ginger. Drink now. 8,714 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Private Reserve is creamy, open-knit and expressive. Lemon confit, spice, vanillin and light tropical notes all grace the 2020. As always, the Private Reserve is done in a richer, creamier style than the Luminus Chardonnay. That approach worked well in 2020. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023 Impressive for the generous, plump flavors and the restraint and elegance of the candied ginger peel, briny preserved lemon, peppery white flower and buttery peach pastry flavors on a plush frame. Reveals a juicy thread of acidity. Drink now. 1,638 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023 Tasted as a tank sample prior to bottling, the barrel-fermented 2021 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard displays a full-bodied, rich, custardy mouthfeel that easily carries the bold flavors of pineapple, white peach and citrus. It’s a blend of several blocks and sees approximately 60% new French oak. (Joe Czerwinski)
JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe is rich with aromas of mineral-rich earth, pine resin, Meyer lemon. and yellow apple. The palate is fleshy, with orange oil, a touch of savory richness, and stony mouthfeel. It is appealing and open now, but it will certainly hold on for 10 or more years. (Audrey Frick)RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe, from the El Diablo Vineyard and Lorenzo Vineyard, offers an incredible combination of concentrated flavors and energetic acidity. It has intense aromas of apricot and quince with nuances of elderflower, brioche, cashews and honey, pleasing, flinty reduction and classy new oak spices. The full-bodied palate explodes with layers of ripe fruits supported by a satiny texture and focused acidity, and it has a dynamic finish that segues from stone fruits to flowers and spicy accents. Wow! About 1,000 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023 This full-bodied and beautifully balanced wine is powered by energized fruit acidity, giving it a lively mouthfeel, vivid green apple and lemon zest flavors and a snappy finish, while subtle oak notes remain secondary. Fermented in oak barrels and stainless barrels, and matured without maloactic conversion, the wine is super refreshing, clean and mouth-watering and should only get more complex and smooth with time. Best from 2024–2031. (Jim Gordon)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023 Always an impressive bottling, the 2021 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch was barrel fermented in a 75% new French oak and 25% stainless steel. Boasting fabulous aromas of lemon curd, apple, pear and pencil shavings, this non-malolactic Chardonnay is full-bodied, round and generous on the palate, then crisp and refreshing on the finish. If it’s not as complex or rich as the very best Chardonnays California has to offer, it’s not that far behind, and the pricing and availability (6000 cases produced) remain reasonable for a wine of this quality. (Joe Czerwinski)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, April 22, 2022 Aromas of candied ginger, baked pear and fresh herbs. Full-bodied with a lovely, oily texture. Layered flavors of chamomile and lavender at the beginning, but turns toward fresh cream and then the note of candied ginger on the nose returns. Linear and balanced. Drink now.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023 The 2020 Chardonnay CH lifts from the glass with a confectionary mix of candied apple, baking spice and mint. This is round and opulent in feel with cooling acidity to balance, as the 2020 traverses spectrums of tropical melon and ripe orchard fruits. It cleans up beautifully through the finish, leaving a twang of saline-minerality, as pretty inner florals slowly fade. (Eric Guido)RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2022 A golden yellow color in the glass, the 2020 Ch Chardonnay offers aromas of blown sand, yellow apple and pastry cream with elements of popcorn kernel and sweet citrus. Medium-bodied, the wine offers a delightful mineral and textural drive over the mid-palate before expressing a clean and delightful finish that delivers at a great price. The wine rested in 25% new French oak. Just over 400,000 bottles were produced. (Anthony Mueller)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021 The 2020 Mâcon-Bussières Le Monsard has a well-defined and quite lifted bouquet with lovely floral scents, buttercup and dandelion. The palate is well balanced with a sappy entry, orange rind and tangerine with a light spicy note towards the finish. Give this two to four years in bottle if you can. Closure: Diam. (Neal Martin)RP89+89+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Sep 2022 Offering up aromas of crisp orchard fruit, fresh melon, white flowers and wet stones framed by light reduction, the 2020 Mâcon-Bussière Le Monsard is medium-bodied, satiny and racy, with chalky structure and a tightly wound core. (William Kelley)
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023 Cakebread’s 2020 Chardonnay Reserve was entirely barrel fermented, with aging taking place in a mix of French oak (33% new), concrete and larger, neutral oak. It features gentle pineapple, lime and custardy notes on the nose, while the palate is medium-bodied, plump and appealing. A tasty, lip-smacking Chardonnay, if only this had more intensity of flavor and length on the finish… (Joe Czerwinski)
RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Jan 2019 The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières offers up notes of ripe citrus, apples and white flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, pure and attractively tensile palate. The vines here are still young and the wine doesn’t have the depth or concentration of the Combettes, but it’s an elegant middle-weight that should offer a broad drinking window.VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019 The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a very taut nose at first, only reluctantly unfurling to reveal green apple scents with touches of honeysuckle and linseed developing with time in the glass. The well-balanced palate is fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, perhaps just needing to manifest more terroir expression and mineralité on the finish.
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Jan 2020 The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières was showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, citrus oil, nutmeg and warm pastry, followed by a medium to full-bodied, racy and nicely defined palate that’s long and intense.
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021 The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières exhibits scents of pear, toasted almonds and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, bright and chalky, it’s deep and concentrated, with a mouthwatering, delicately oak-inflected finish.VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru, a majority of the vines under 20 years old, was picked on 10 September. It is well-defined on the nose with light orange rind and very subtle muscat-like aromas, tight and benefitting from modest aeration. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening. There is a fine bead of acidity here given the warmth of the growing season, hints of praline and almond shaving towards the composed finish.
RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022 Notes of pear, waxy yellow orchard fruit, nutmeg and freshly baked bread introduce the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, a delicate, medium-bodied white that’s bright, fine-boned and saline in this warm vintage. (William Kelley)VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a nicely detailed bouquet with fine delineation, orange pith and light linen scents developing with time. The palate is well balanced with tangy orange zest on the entry, quite linear and strict with a fresh finish, though it does not quite possess the mineralité of the Combettes. (Neal Martin)
RP89+89–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jul 2021 I tasted barrels from the two components — Servoisine and En Veau—that will be blended to create Joblot’s 2020 Givry 1er Cru Mademoiselle. Offering up aromas of citrus and orchard fruit, this evidently is a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise wine in the making; but given the early stage at which I tasted it, I’ll refrain from saying much more.
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022 The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Dessus Les Gollardes Blanc is lovely, wafting from the glass with scents of citrus zest, crisp green orchard fruit and struck match. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and precise, it’s vibrant and flavorful, concluding with a chalky finish. (William Kelley)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Jul 2022 The 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin opens in the glass with notes of pear, fresh peach, citrus confit, blanched almonds and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it’s a precise, saline wine with terrific depth at the core and a racy, dynamic profile after the more powerful, weighty 2019 vintage. (William Kelley)VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2020 Chablis Vaucoupin 1er Cru has the best definition and clarity of Picq’s 2020s, delivering laser-like precision and vibrant citric fruit; blood orange scents develop with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with an intense saline entry, very good depth and a vibrant, lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb. This would be my pick from Picq this year. (Neal Martin)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Jul 2022 Unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus oil, oyster shell, fresh pastry and light reduction, the 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros is medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, mineral finish. This is another impeccably balanced, precise wine from Didier Picq. (William Kelley)VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2020 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru has a tensile, steely nose, backward at first, then revealing touches of yellow flower and damp earthy scents with time. The palate is well balanced with a very saline entry, strict and linear in keeping with Picq’s style, and displays fine depth and a tang of bitter lemon and blood orange on the finish. Excellent. (Neal Martin)
