When it comes to Chardonnay, France (White Burgundy) and California lead the way, though with very different styles. The Chardonnay brands from Burgundy in France tend to be steely and mineral-inflected, while chardonnay brands from California rich, buttery, and often aged in oak (which adds its flavor to the wine). Both styles are immensely popular, and part of the reason that Chardonnay is the most popular white wine in the world.

Because Chardonnay takes so well to many climates, it's grown around the world, with other stellar examples hailing from Chile, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. It pairs best with seafood such as lobster and many white meats such as pork and poultry.

  2. Domaine Dujac Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru - Les Folatieres

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#50506

    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Jan 2019
The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières offers up notes of ripe citrus, apples and white flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, pure and attractively tensile palate. The vines here are still young and the wine doesn’t have the depth or concentration of the Combettes, but it’s an elegant middle-weight that should offer a broad drinking window.
    VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a very taut nose at first, only reluctantly unfurling to reveal green apple scents with touches of honeysuckle and linseed developing with time in the glass. The well-balanced palate is fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, perhaps just needing to manifest more terroir expression and mineralité on the finish.

  3. Elouan Oregon Chardonnay

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#50266

    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2019
Fruit-forward and appealing, with snappy tropical fruit and toasted spice flavors. Drink now. 4,721 cases made.
    WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Full bodied and well rounded, this takes a sharp turn in the mouth into flavors of spun sugar. At the moment it’s a not-quite-resolved flavor battle between the simple apple fruit and the (apparent) residual sugar.

  4. Walter Hansel The Meadows Vineyard Chardonnay

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51486

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The 2017 Chardonnay The Meadows Vineyard gives smoke and gunflint aromas to begin, with red apple skin, crushed shell, flaky pastry, white peach and white blossoms. The palate is medium to full-bodied, creamy and pleasantly weighty in the mouth with concentrated fruits, juicy freshness and a long, minerally finish. 544 cases produced.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2019
The 2017 Chardonnay The Meadows opens with lovely sweetness, creaminess and breadth, but it has plenty of supporting structure that becomes more apparent on the midpalate and finish. Dried flowers, chamomile, apricot and orchard fruit all meld in this silky, expansive Chardonnay. The 2017 The Meadows should drink well with minimal cellaring.
