You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.
Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.

WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22 Robert Eden pulls this wine from his biodynamically tended vineyards in the rocky, windy highlands of La Livinière. A blend of syrah with grenache and carignan, it’s a wine you can sink your teeth into, and it responds with juicy black fruit, spicy and fresh, and notes of mint, licorice and rose. Vinified in cement eggs and vats, it retains a sense of cool, stony clarity that brings light to its darkness and beams them into long-lasting fragrance. It’s at once firmly structured and ethereal, a balance that makes it addictive as well as potentially long-lived.
JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021 Another magical wine in the lineup, the 2019 No 8 is Syrah-based, with 9% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier. There should be a little over 800 cases produced, and it was 55% destemmed and is still resting in 65% new French oak. I love its freshness and elegance, and it’s one of those rare incredibly hedonistic yet seamless, weighty wines that does everything right. Pure cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, and white pepper slowly emerge on the nose, and it’s full-bodied, with perfect balance and a great, great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021 Deep purple-black in color, notes of stewed plums, ripe boysenberries and juicy blackberries charge out of the gate, followed by hints of root beer, smoked meats, black truffles and hoisin. The full-bodied palate has beautiful freshness with a provocative peppery note and bags of ripe, rich black fruits, finishing long and spicy. Due to be bottled in mid-August 2021, 850 cases and a few magnums will be made.

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Aug 2021 Deep garnet-purple colored, it erupts from the glass with a powerfully fragrant nose of red roses, Morello cherries, boysenberries and juicy blueberries, followed by hints of mocha, star anise, cardamom and cassia. The concentrated, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with bright, crunchy black, blue and red fruits. It has a rock-solid structure of firm, finely-grained tannins and seamless freshness lifting the shimmering layers to a long, energetic finish. The complexity and vivacity of this Syrah are simply jaw-dropping! A full-bodied, seductive, incredibly sexy wine that’s just about overflowing with fruit, its deep purple color is followed by beautiful cassis and darker berry fruits as well as notes of smoke game, pepper, and spring flowers. The tannins are polished, and it has a great mid-palate as well as one heck of a great finish. Due to the difficulty in trademarking names today, the estate has settled on using the name Distenta for their normal Syrah going forward. JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 The 2019 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is similarly inky colored and has a classic nose of plums, Asian spices, sandalwood, and iron. Medium to full-bodied, with good acidity and ripe tannins, it doesn’t have the sheer weight, richness, or girth of the Vieilles Fontaines, yet it’s certainly a more classic Cornas that will be approachable with just 3–4 years of bottle age yet evolve for twenty years if you’re so inclined. It’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated enough, yet it’s not overbearing or heavy; it’s just deliciously drinkable and will drink well for more than a decade. Enticing scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis appear on the nose (it ages in 100% new oak), and while this full-bodied wine packs plenty of power, it also shows characteristic granite-derived restraint, delivering a tense balance between ripeness and structure. It should be a beauty, but give it time, as the tannins are prominent at this early stage of its evolution.JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022 Coming from a cooler, granite terroir just above Tournon, the 2019 Saint Joseph Vignes De L’Hospice is a serious, age-worthy beauty, and I always find a certain Hermitage-like character in wines from this vineyard. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has masses of tannins as well as remarkable purity, and ample fruit and concentration. The aromatics lean toward the blue end of the spectrum, but it’s a mineral-laced, peppery, beautiful Saint Joseph in the making. A solid 4–6 years, if not more, of bottle age are recommended.
