You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.

Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.

If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!

  1. Pursued by Bear Baby Bear Syrah

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57793

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
Impeccably balanced and refined yet plump with personality, this red offers multilayered blueberry and huckleberry flavors accented by black olive and smoky cracked pepper. Finishes with rich, polished tannins. Drink now through 2030. 237 cases made. (Tim Fish)
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 9, 2022
A tad reductive on the nose, so be sure to let this breathe. Hot stones, wild herbs, ripe plums, blackberries and vanilla on the nose. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Vibrant and complex. Atop the core of ripe dark fruit there is ground baking spice, oregano and white pepper. Very steady. Drink or hold.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2022
Fruit and barrel intertwine on the aromas, with notes of char, roasted coffee bean, vanilla and dark fruit. The palate is creamy in feel, showing intensity and sophistication. Baking spice notes linger on the finish. Oak plays a prominent part but plays it well. (Sean P. Sullivan)
    JD91+91+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/9/2022
Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and spicy, peppery herb and floral notes emerge from the 2018 Syrah Baby Bear, a medium-bodied, elegant, incredibly pretty, balanced Syrah that can be drunk today or cellared for 8–10 years. This estate continues to play at a very high level, and this is another terrific wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/22
This burly wine has so much richness that, in all your luxuriating over it, you may overlook the woodland scents of mushrooms, the amaro flavors and foresty tannins. Winemaker Daniel Wampfler has managed to build a great deal of complexity into a big syrah.

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021
Packed with dark fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit, this pumps along with ample depth and drive, picking up licorice snap, roasted applewood and dark tea notes along the way. Nice energy through the finish too, thanks to an underlying iron note. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases made, 150 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

  3. Arnot-Roberts Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#60076

    VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts. It emerges from Roberts’ home vineyard in the Taylor Lane district that includes other notable vineyards such as Summa and Thieriot. The Que Syrah dazzles from the very first taste. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint and rose petals all soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. At times, the 2021 has a Pinot-like finesse, but the Syrah aromatics and structure are there, buried underneath the fruit. The 2021 is totally dialed in. It’s a magical wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. (Antonio Galloni)

  4. K Vintners The Beautiful Syrah

    Powerline Vineyard
    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56220

    JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021
The 2018 Syrah The Beautiful Powerline Vineyard comes from a vineyard outside of Walla Walla, in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. It was not destemmed and was brought up in neutral, larger barrels. An exotic nose of ripe blue and black fruits, lavender, sappy flowers, and herbes de Provence-like nuances give way to a medium to full-bodied, richly textured, structured wine with a mouth-filling, layered, meaty style that builds nicely with time in the glass. There’s always a sappy, almost herbal edge to this beauty, and it ages beautifully. Feel free to open bottles any time over the coming 15–20 years. It would certainly be hard to pick out in a lineup of top Northern Rhône Syrahs. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
A potent red, deeply structured yet dynamic, with blackberry, crushed stone, cured meat and black olive accents that gather richness and polish toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032. 1,128 cases made.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022
The 2018 Syrah The Beautiful is clone 470 with a touch of Viognier co-fermented, aged in 30% new French oak puncheons before bottling. The Viognier brings beautiful honeysuckle tones alongside crème de violette and suggestions of baking spices. The salinity here is outstanding as blackberry compote, black tea and exotic spices mingle with the seamless texture and gorgeous length. Enjoy this outstanding bottling over the next eight-plus years.

  5. K Vintners The Hidden Syrah

    Northridge Vineyard
    2013 / 750 ml. | Item#44174

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
Reminding me of a Northern Rhone Syrah from the Le Meal lieu-dit on Hermitage Hill, the 2013 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard comes entirely from the Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope, was fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in mostly neutral oak. It offers thrilling notes of black raspberries, toasted bread, caramelized meats and licorice in a full-bodied, ultra-pure, supple, incredibly sexy style. Possessing building, fine tannin, it needs a lengthy decant if drinking anytime soon, but this utterly seamless, perfectly balanced beauty will offer upward of two decades of overall longevity.
    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2017
Aromas of pomegranate, black fruit, herb and barrel spice lead to rich seamless palate-coating dark-fruit flavors. It’s hedonistic but retains a sense of balance along with an unabashed deliciousness.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Broad, generous and opulent, with raspberry, black cherry and rhubarb flavors that maintain momentum into a long and supple finish, picking up hints of dill and black tea. Best from 2018 through 2023. 760 cases made.

Saturated magenta. Displays expressive red and dark berry, smoked meat, olive and floral qualities on the spice-accented nose. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering gently sweet cherry-cola, blackberry and baking spice flavors that show fine detail and a mineral, back-end lift. Finishes very long and subtly chewy, with repeating smokiness, harmonious tannins and strong persistence. (Josh Raynolds)

  9. Booker Fracture

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57882

    JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/1/2020
Another magical wine, the 2018 Fracture is based on 100% Syrah brought up in new and used French oak. Deep purple-hued, with beautiful notes of crème de cassis, blackberries, vanilla bean, toasted spices, white flowers, and a hints of charcuterie, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, perfectly integrated oak, a rounded, lush mouthfeel, and a great finish. This unabashedly Paso Robles Syrah brings loads of fruit yet stays balanced, elegant, and is simply a thrill to drink. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
Youthful purple. Heady, spice-accented aromas of blackberry, blueberry cherry liqueur and pungent flowers show excellent clarity and energetic lift. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, displaying sharply defined black/blue fruit, violet pastille, cola and exotic spice flavors that turn livelier as the wine opens up. Finishes extremely long, smoky and minerally, with powerful, spicy thrust, a repeating floral note and gently chewy, polished tannins.
    RP94+94–96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Feb 2020
A barrel sample of 100% Syrah aging in 65% new French oak, the deep purple-black colored 2018 Fracture has a nose of tar, loamy earth, grilled meats, roasted lamb, rosemary and thyme with loads of violet perfume, mint chocolate and coffee bean aromas — this is already incredibly layered. It’s full-bodied and silky, slowly unfurling to spicy, floral-tinged blue fruits. It has an excellent frame with plush tannins and incredibly surprising freshness, finishing very long and very dense. Around 2,500 cases will be made.

  11. E. Guigal Château d’Ampuis Côte Rôtie

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57945

    JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022
I was blown away by the 2018 Côte Rôtie Château D’Ampuis, which is certainly in the same league as the famed La Las. Coming from seven single vineyards and seeing the same upbringing as the flagship releases, this reveals a vivid purple hue as well as stunning aromatics of cassis, smoked game, spring flowers, and subtle smoke. It has background espresso-laced oak that’s perfectly integrated, it’s full-bodied, and it has ripe, polished tannins and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, March 21, 2022
The very deep, smoky and spicy nose pulls you into this very concentrated, focused and elegant Cote-Rotie, with delicate notes of coconut and pomegranate adding to the very complex picture. Very long, polished finish with delicate sweetness and underplayed power. Drink or hold.
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022
Smoky, briary and complex, the 2018 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis spent 38 months in new oak, yet it still exudes notes of blackberries and blueberries, testament to the wine’s ample concentration. It’s full-bodied and rich yet silky and long, with hints of mocha and brown sugar appearing on the finish. It’s another beautiful vintage of this cuvée, which combines fruit from seven different parcels (three on the Cote Blonde and four on the Cote Brune).

  12. Motor City Kitty Syrah

    Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard
    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#55214

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/15/2020
Coming from the Oldfield and Boushey Vineyards (basically the same vineyard), the 2017 Syrah Motor City Kitty Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard is slightly darker colored and, as with all the Rhones here, wasn’t destemmed and was brought up in mostly neutral puncheons. Blackberries, smoked earth, game, chocolate, and chalky minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it’s a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that will evolve positively for 2–4 years and keep for a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, June 1, 2020
This is deep and flavorful with spice, meat, wet earth and a light, greenish note. It’s medium-to full-bodied, lively and flavor-focused. Drink now.

  13. Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58980

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Jul 2022
The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds’s reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better. (Erin Larkin)
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2022
Ripe and generous, but the aromatics take this to the next level, with notes of cardamom, paprika and dried rose petal, plus touches of candied violet and cocoa powder, to complement the core of fleshy blackberry, black cherry and cassis. The tannins are dense but velvety, and this finishes with warm chocolaty notes. Drink now through 2035. 9,287 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 26, 2022
A homage to warmer-region, South Australian shiraz, this has a rich and smooth delivery of ripe blackberries and red-to-dark plums on the nose. The wine has taken its 12 months in American oak (16% new) well and truly in its stride. Plush and suave mouth-feel here, this is effortless and a style that sits right in the Penfolds sweet spot. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022
Opaque ruby. Oak-spiced cherry, blackberry and mocha aromas, along with coconut, licorice and cracked pepper accents. Deep and weighty on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, mocha and oak spice flavors that show an appealing sweetness but are slow to open. In a distinctly powerful style, delivering youthfully chewy tannins and a long, chewy finish that echoes the licorice and dark berry notes. (Josh Raynolds)

  14. Sine Qua Non Distenta I Syrah

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57054

    RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Aug 2021
Deep garnet-purple colored, it erupts from the glass with a powerfully fragrant nose of red roses, Morello cherries, boysenberries and juicy blueberries, followed by hints of mocha, star anise, cardamom and cassia. The concentrated, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with bright, crunchy black, blue and red fruits. It has a rock-solid structure of firm, finely-grained tannins and seamless freshness lifting the shimmering layers to a long, energetic finish. The complexity and vivacity of this Syrah are simply jaw-dropping! (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
    JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/26/2021
Not yet bottled, the 2019 Syrah Distenta 1 checks in as 83.6% Syrah, 6.2% Grenache, 5.2% Petite Sirah, and the rest Mourvèdre, Muscat, and Petit Manseng. A full-bodied, seductive, incredibly sexy wine that’s just about overflowing with fruit, its deep purple color is followed by beautiful cassis and darker berry fruits as well as notes of smoke game, pepper, and spring flowers. The tannins are polished, and it has a great mid-palate as well as one heck of a great finish. Due to the difficulty in trademarking names today, the estate has settled on using the name Distenta for their normal Syrah going forward. Luckily though, the incredible artwork on the labels will continue. (Jeb Dunnuck)
