You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.

Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.

If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!

  1. Arnot-Roberts Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#57770

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from Nathan Roberts’ home vineyard near Occidental, was picked very late for the year, on November 1. It offers up a beguiling mix of bacon fat, licorice, game, scorched earth, cracked pepper, grilled herbs and black fruit. The Que Syrah has a very strong, assertive profile loaded with the smokier, gamy qualities that are typical of Syrah, especially cool climate Syrah. I did not pick up any taint, but there is no question this is a wine with a very strong aromatic and flavor profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

  3. Cambria Tepusquet Vineyard Syrah

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#54141

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2018
The 2015 Syrah Tepusquet Vineyard is the most impressive wine in the range today. Powerful, dense and explosive, the 2015 pulses with both energy. An exotic mélange of inky dark fruit, creme de cassis, lavender, black pepper and spice builds as this striking wine shows off its pedigree.
    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 15, 2018
The only Syrah I was able to taste from this estate was the 2015 Syrah Tepusquet. It’s a smoky, meaty, barbecue-scented beauty that has lots of pepper and dark fruits, medium to full body, a ripe, sexy texture, and a great finish. It has ample character and will keep for 5–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  4. Colgin IX Estate Syrah

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#53394

    JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
Lastly, and all destemmed aged 18 months in roughly 70% new French oak, the 2017 Syrah IX Estate needs to be tasted to be believed. It’s hard to understand how this incredible wine was produced in a vintage like 2017. Revealing a deep purple color as well as a monster bouquet of blackberries, orange blossom, smoked meat, bacon fat, and spring flower, it’s deep, full-bodied, and beautifully pure on the palate, with silky tannins and a singular, exotic character. It’s not easy to find, but unquestionably worth the effort! (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 IX Syrah Estate opens with the most beautiful nose of crushed black berries, boysenberries, mulberries, chocolate-covered cherries, star anise and red roses with touches of garrigue, mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Medium-bodied, the palate is very firm and elegant with approachably ripe, rounded tannins and layer upon layer of perfumed flavors. It has a long pepper and spice-laced finish. Very impressive!
    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Syrah IX Estate is rich and ample on the palate, with tremendous aromatic and flavor intensity. Savory herb, iron, mint, licorice, blood orange and exotic spice infuse the 2017 with tons of character as well as nuance. Inky and sumptuous, with plenty of structural depth, the 2017 hits all the right notes. Like all of the 2017s here, the Syrah needs cellaring. It is such a gorgeous wine.
    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, February 14, 2020
What a wonderful red with blackberry, clove, dried-meat and tea aromas. Full-bodied, really fine and polished. It caresses your palate. Chocolate, tiramisu and hints of sandalwood. Intensely flavorful. Super syrah. Drink or hold.

  7. Domaine Courbis Cornas Les Eygats

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#54013

    JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 19, 2020
From a cooler parcel of pure granite soils, the 2018 Cornas Les Eygats is probably the most classic Cornas in the lineup (although these all have plenty of Cornas character) with its more mineral, iron, and almost bloody style. Loaded with massive amounts of blue and black fruits, violets, and crushed rock nuances, this full-bodied, multi-dimensional, seamless Cornas has polished tannins, flawless balance, and a monster of a finish. This broad, expansive, sexy Cornas should drink well for 20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 3, 2021
Alluringly dark, with winey plum sauce and black currant fruit drawing you in, while savory, olive and bramble notes course underneath. Racy mineral edge leaves a mouthwatering feel and is a worthy foil to the toasty overlay on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2032. 450 cases made, 50 cases imported.

  9. Domaine Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Ampodium

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59339

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry, olive and pungent flowers are sharpened by a suggestion of black pepper. Supple and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated black raspberry, cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors and a suggestion of star anise. Finishes pliant, sweet and focused on the penetrating finish, showing smooth tannins and excellent tenacity. (Josh Raynolds)
    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/15/2022
The base Côte Rôtie from Rostaing seems to always deliver, and the 2020 Côte Rôtie Ampodium might be the best yet. Deep purple-hued, with a brilliant nose of black raspberries, spring flowers, camphor, scorched earth, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, lush mouthfeel, and building tannins. I’ve always thought the 2010 was the greatest vintage for this cuvée, but this is going to give it a run for its money. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  10. Domaine Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cote Blonde

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#53619

    RP97+97–99 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The most tannic of the "big three" bottlings this year, the 2018 Cote Rotie la Cote Blonde features elegant hints of mixed herbs entwined around bold boysenberry fruit. It’s medium to full-bodied, with plentiful fine-grained tannins that firm up on the long finish. Embryonic, but oh so promising, it should blossom in another five years or so.
    JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - December 12, 2019
A wine that’s going to push the upper limits of my scale, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde has a wonderful sense of opulence and elegance paired with huge minerality and power. Giving up primordial notes of perfectly ripe currants, new saddle leather, spice, and wildflowers, it has a magical texture, huge richness and depth, loads of tannins, and a huge finish. It made my pulse jump. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN96+96–97 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
Sexy, mineral-laced black raspberry, cherry compote and floral pastille aromas are complemented by exotic spice and olive flourishes. Sappy and precise on the palate, offering vibrant red and dark berry and candied violet flavors underscored by a seam of smoky minerality. Fine-grained, even tannins sneak in very slowly and meld seamlessly on the strikingly long finish, which leaves behind vibrant spice, red fruit liqueur and mineral notes.

An assertively perfumed bouquet displays an array of ripe red and blue fruit preserve, floral and spice qualities, along with suggestions of licorice, smoky bacon fat and mineral notes. Effortlessly marries depth and energy and offers sweet cherry, crème de mûre and candied violet flavors sharpened by building mineral and spice flourishes. Shows noteworthy clarity and mineral cut on a long, penetrating finish that echoes the floral and mineral notes with real authority.

  12. Domaine Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cote Blonde

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59336

    JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/15/2022
Leading off two perfect wines, the 2020 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde comes from two separate plantings going back to the 1970s and was brought up all in barrel. A legendary Côte Rôtie in every way, it offers an incredible perfume of sweet cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, incense, camphor, and hints of cured meats. This carries to a full-bodied Côte Rôtie that has just about off-the-charts richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, beautifully polished tannins, and flawless balance. This unquestionably rivals the 1999, and while it’s going to have some early accessibility, it deserves at least 4–6 years of bottle age and will last for two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
Saturated ruby. Potent, finely detailed aromas of red and dark fruit liqueur, smoked meat, potpourri and exotic spices, along with a vibrant mineral top note. Sappy, alluringly sweet and penetrating, offering intense cherry, boysenberry, allspice and star anise flavors and a potent suggestion of candied lavender. Silky, finely wrought tannins build steadily through an exceptionally long, penetrating finish that echoes the floral and mineral notes. (Josh Raynolds)
    RP97+97–99 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
My favorite of the 2020s from Rostaing—at least until I try the wines again next year—is the 2020 Cote Rotie la Cote Blonde. Scents of crushed stone and red raspberries give the impression of seamless transmission of terroir allied to incredible fruit purity. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it’s an amazing expression of Cote Rotie that should age effortlessly for a couple of decades. (Joe Czerwinski)

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#53618

    RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
For the 2018 Cote Rotie la Landonne, Pierre Rostaing put together a blend from two barrels. Wow. Toast and mocha notes frame raspberries and blueberries in this medium to full-bodied offering. It’s simultaneously rich, silky and concentrated. Packed with flavor and depth, it looks as if it will be approachable within a couple of years yet be capable of evolving for a couple of decades.
    JD96+96–98 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - December 12, 2019
The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Landonne offers the classic meaty, mineral, and masculine style that’s the hallmark of this terroir. It’s powerful and full-bodied, with massive minerality as well as notes of bloody meat, ground pepper, and graphite. It’s another serious, concentrated, powerful 2018 that’s going to demand bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN95+95–95 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
Ripe, smoke-tinged dark berries and pungent floral scents are brightened by building mineral and spice flourishes. Spicy and impressively concentrated on the palate, offering energetic blackberry and violet pastille flavors, along with exotic spice and cracked pepper nuances. Fleshes out with air while maintaining vivacity, and finishes extremely long and chewy, displaying excellent clarity, steadily mounting tannins and suave florality.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Seductive up front, with dark currant and blackberry details that have melded with licorice root, sweet bay leaf, dark olive and tar accents. The finish is grippy, but has cut and drive, thanks to an iron note and nicely embedded acidity. Best from 2023 through 2035. 800 cases made.

    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#39423

    SP9999 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2014
Terrifically dense, with tightly coiled flavors of warm ganache, fig paste and blackberry confiture. Shows plenty of range as well, with well-embedded notes of bay leaf, chestnut, juniper, black tea and charcoal. This is intensely grippy through the lengthy, fine-grained finish. Should age marvelously and slowly. Best from 2017 through 2040. 600 cases made.
    RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Dec 2013
Scheduled to be bottled in February of 2014, the 2010 Cote Rotie La Landonne is a more fresh, pure and focused example of the 2009. While it doesn’t have the over the top exuberance of the prior vintage, it offers incredibly pure, detailed and classic aromas and flavors of black pepper, currants, blackberry, mineral and smoked bacon fat. Full-bodied, layered and deeply concentrated, yet also graceful and seamless, this knockout effort should require a decade to come around and have 3–4 decades of longevity.
