You say Syrah, and I say Shiraz. Wine lovers will tell you they're the same grape, just from different settings. The Australian red wine, Shiraz, burst onto the scene in the 1990's and remains popular to this day, and it's hard to believe it's made from the same grape that's used to make the famous red wines of France's Northern Rhône. Thanks to the vastly different climates and terroir in those two places, the grape produces vastly different wines.

Other regions are having some success with Syrah/Shiraz wine, as well. California, South Africa, Chile, and others have created some stellar bottles in recent years.

If you're in the market for a red wine - Shiraz, Syrah...whatever you want to call it - look no further than WineMadeEasy.com!

  1. Gramercy Cellars John Lewis Syrah

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57089

    JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021
The finest vintage here since the 2015, the 2018 Syrah John Lewis boasts a deeper ruby/purple hue to go with thrilling notes of violets, tapenade, lavender, and peppered meats, all supported by a gorgeous core of ripe darker fruits. Medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and with building structure, this sensational Washington State Syrah will benefit from 2–4 years in the cellar and keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Jul 2021
Devastatingly gorgeous and refined, the 2018 Syrah John Lewis was made with 100% whole clusters. The nose gives up a stunning array of aromas with precision and finesse, brilliantly displaying dusty black raspberry, juicy currant and cassis with a kiss of oak to frame the picturesque fruit. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate offers immense pleasure with a regal mouthfeel, mineral tension, just-ripe red fruit tones and a soft tannic edge. The succulent acidity keeps the wine fresh in the mouth with a food-friendly expression across the elongated and evolving finish. The wine rested for 17 months in 7% new French oak puncheons. This bottling is clearly one of the great Syrahs coming from the Walla Walla Valley; if you are not familiar with this wine, you should absolutely check it out. Honestly, I just want to keep smelling my glass. Bravo! Only 2,400 bottles were filled.
    WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/22
As in most years, John Lewis is built for the future, packed with aromatic and structural elements that take days to unfurl. This 2018 is a brooding wine for now, all clove and sweet cassis, mocha and olive, with flavors moving forward as the wine opens. By day three the wine takes on a polished texture that feels natural and elegant. For the cellar.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
Medium-deep red. Deeper-pitched aromas of raspberry, smoked meat and brown spices lifted by a floral element. Supple, fine-grained, spicy and nicely delineated; the best of these Syrahs in concentration, inner-mouth energy and grip, and a bit sweeter than the rest. Again, the tannins are wonderfully suave, but this wine also possesses more supporting material and ripeness. The very subtle, building finish shows terrific energy and grip, with the tannins spreading out horizontally to saturate the palate and teeth. A classic Gramercy Cellars Syrah.
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Since its inception, John Lewis has been designated for the winery’s best Syrah, with an eye toward long-term ageablity (as well as pairing with food). This is a wine for the future. Aromas of raspberry, flower, smoked meat and herb lead to fresh, acid-driven flavors. The tannins give a firm squeeze. It’s largely about structure right now, but what lies underneath is beautiful. Pair it with roasted pork loin. Best after 2028, with a long life beyond that.

  2. Gramercy Cellars Lagniappe Syrah

    Red Willow Vineyard
    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#57925

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/15/2020
The 2017 Syrah Lagniappe comes all from the Red Willow Vineyard and was 10% destemmed and brought up in 10% new French oak. Deeper ruby/purple, with blackberry fruits interwoven with lots of ground pepper, gravelly earth, and iron-laced aromatics, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The balance here is spot on and it’s a classic, age-worthy Syrah from this estate. Give bottles 3–5 years and it’s going to evolve for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Bright medium ruby; dark for a wine from this producer. Savory Old World perfume of crushed blackberry, licorice, peppery herbs and black olive. Densely packed, savory and fine-grained, with an impression of peppery vinosity lifting the middle palate. Superb intensity and flavor definition here, along with a subtle sweetness. The firm, rising back end shows strong black fruit and black olive flavors lifted by a soil-driven peppery element. This bottling stood out in 2016 for its intensity and light touch, and this 2017 is a worthy successor, finishing with resounding palate-staining length and grip. Ultimately, I’d have a hard time identifying this Syrah as a Washington wine owing to its sharp definition and light touch. (Stephen Tanzer)
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Oct 2020
The 2017 Syrah Lagniappe opens to a nose of dark fruit and undertones of spice along with a dusty mineral essence. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is shy on the palate, offering a spicy character that grows in amplitude and persistence as time goes on. The wine lingers with a spicy finish that leaves me wanting just a bit more fruit profile to push the score higher.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
Coming from this esteemed site in Yakima Valley, aromas of stem, moist earth, smoked meat and black pepper are followed by tart, lip-smacking flavors that ramp up in intensity with time open. Grainy tannins back it up. It needs time to show its best. Drink after 2025. Pair it with grilled meat.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/21
Gramercy’s Red Willow bottling is tense and savory, a remarkably cool expression of Columbia Valley fruit. It leads with scents of olive and pine tips, a bit of black plum and mocha which, with air, becomes more biting, like espresso. The flavors are savory, the fruit remaining in the background for now, with a firm texture that calls for something rich to offset, like pork roast.

  4. Horsepower Syrah High Contrast Vineyard

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#51832

    JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - April 11, 2019
From a vineyard planted in 2013, the 2016 Syrah High Contrast saw loads of stems and mostly neutral barrels. This thrilling wine has a Chave Hermitage-like purity and class as well as gorgeous notes of cassis, black raspberries, smoked earth, and graphite. It’s deep, pure and layered, incredibly layered, pure, and long, with a finish that won’t quit. This isn’t for those looking for an inky, massive wine, but it’s pure class, complete, amazingly long, and elegant. Give bottles a few years in the cellar and it’s going to shine for 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
The 2016 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard initially wafts from the glass with a rocky dustiness, then reveals an elegant black and red-fruited core of aromas, oozing with seductively bright and focused black raspberry notes, followed by red and purple flowers, a line of stemminess and dried herbs de Provence on the lifted and aromatically complex nose. Medium-bodied on the palate, the wine is ethereal at first, then compounds in the mouth with a mineral tension, the fruit turning a touch tarter across the mid-palate, showing incredible precision and balance. The wine continues to evolve with a fantastic expression and long, drawn-out finish for this young vineyard that was just planted in 2013. Only 335 cases were produced. If you can afford it and you can find it, buy it!
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Fresh dark red. Complex scents of dark raspberry, boysenberry, musky herbs, dark chocolate, brown sugar and flinty minerality. Quite dense, thick and deep, particularly for very young vines, conveying a strong saline character to its flavors of black raspberry, cherry liqueur and minerals. This large-scaled, mouthfilling wine finishes ripely tannic and long, with a late note of chocolate-covered cherry. Ultimately a bit salty for my taste (the pH is a very high 4.1) but there’s plenty of fruit too. Incidentally, Christophe Baron bought a total of 18 acres with his general manager Trevor Dorland. While all of the acreage technically lies within The Rocks, only half of it features the round stones typical of this district, according to Dorland.

  5. Horsepower Syrah High Contrast Vineyard

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56153

    JD97+97+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021
Last of the Syrahs, the 2018 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as a wonderfully complex, classic Syrah nose of red and black fruits, cured meats, mushrooms, bacon fat, iron, and forest floor, with a touch of flowers emerging with time in the glass. With its medium to full-bodied richness, firm, focusing tannins, and great finish, it’s another wine that takes savoriness to the nth degree. I love its texture, and there’s almost a Burgundian style here that keeps you coming back to the glass. Hide bottles for 4–5 years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
Bright ruby-red, the darkest of these Horsepower bottlings. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, menthol, bitter chocolate, crushed rock, violet and licorice are more Hermitage than Côte-Rôtie. At once dense and lively, conveying more energy and black fruit intensity than the Sur Echalas Syrah. Boasts lovely inner-mouth verve and definition for such a rich wine, and a captivating balance of sweetness and acidity. Also purer and sweeter than the Sur Echalas, with more subtle salty and balsamic tones. Finishes firmly tannic, ripe and very long, with complicating hints of violet and black olive. I particularly like this wine’s balance of acidity and sweetness. It has the spine to evolve positively in bottle but its subtle sweetness gives it early appeal. Incidentally, the Horsepower wines are fermented in concrete tanks and aged in neutral demi-muids and foudres, with this bottling getting some second-fill demi-muids.

  6. K Syrah The Deal

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#51027

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - April 11, 2019
The 2016 Syrah The Deal comes from the sandy, loamy soils of the Wahluke Slope and has classic earthy notes of spices, forest floor, dried herbs, hot stones, and a crushed rock-like sensation of minerality. Full-bodied, concentrated, and opulent on the palate, it has a beautiful balance between richness and elegance, fine tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 5, 2019
This is from the Sundance Vineyard, which has volcanic, sandy soils at a higher elevation than the surrounding plots. The nose has aromas of crushed dried flowers and bright red berries that follow to the palate where a streak of sweetly spicy oak threads into the ripe, composed and elegant red-plum finish. Drink over the next decade.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2019

  7. K Syrah The Hustler

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#44368

    WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2017
This is a unicorn wine that only gets made in exceptional years—the last time was a decade ago. Hailing from Morrison Lane, the oldest Syrah plantings in the valley, it brings mesmerizing aromas of blackberry, black fruit, moist earth and wet stone. The black-fruit flavors consume the palate, showing density, depth and exceptional length. It’s a complete heart-stopper.
    RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2015
Still in barrel at the time of this tasting, the 2012 Syrah The Hustler is a blockbuster-styled Syrah that’s overflowing with notions of sweet red and black fruits, toasted bread, cured meats and cedar. Only made in special vintages (it was previously made in ’03, ’07 and ’09) and aged 38 months in French oak, it’s full-bodied, decadent and layered, with a weightless, elegant, seamless feel. Coming all from the Morrison Lane Vineyard (it’s actually the Morrison Lane Syrah with extended barrel aging), it should be ready to go on release and dish out tons of pleasure over the following decade or more. The extended elevage has given this a more upfront feel, yet I suspect it will also allow it age more slowly as well.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2016
Has presence, featuring a smoky edge to blueberry and black cherry flavors that spill around the stony notes on the finish. Comes together with intensity and harmony. Best from 2017 through 2022. 143 cases made.

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022
Made entirely from Phelps clone Syrah, the 2018 Syrah Powerline was aged for 24 months in 35% new French oak prior to bottling. It has a very Côte-Rôtie bull’s-blood character alongside iodine and volcanic ash on the nose. The palate is plush with a seamless texture and wonderful length. A very pretty core of dark fruits mingles with shades of creosote, Earl Grey tea and suggestions of orange zest. The flavor and aromatic range here are outstanding, and this brilliant wine isn’t going anywhere for another 10 years.
    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021
Another Syrah from this site in Walla Walla, the dense purple/ruby 2018 Syrah Powerline Vineyard offers up a classic nose of spiced red and black fruits, cured meats, peppery herbs, lavender, and truffle. This carries to a rich, medium to full-bodied Syrah with terrific tannins as well as balance. It already offers considerable pleasure yet is going to have a solid 10–15 years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022

    JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/6/2021
Coming from a site on Snipes Mountain and all Syrah that wasn’t destemmed, the 2018 Syrah Cattle King Upland Vineyard boasts a medium ruby, almost opaque color as well as a gorgeous perfume of framboise, mulberries, flowery incense, lavender, and herbes de Provence. It shows plenty of bacon fat and meatiness with time in the glass and is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. This complex, Burgundian-style Syrah is going to evolve of 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022
The 2018 Syrah Cattle King is sourced from the Upland vineyard on Snipes Mountain, set on a steep slope of river rock. The wine was aged in 50% new French oak puncheons for 24 months before bottling. It delivers plenty of aromatic range, from rich dark fruits to stony undertones to nori and crème de violette. The palate is very fresh and refined, with beautiful length and mouthwatering acidity alongside a core of black cherry and black raspberry fruits with salty/stony undertones. Kirsch, ripe black cherries, roasted herbs, violets, and orange blossom notes all emerge from the 2018 The Hidden Syrah Northridge Vineyard, which is all Syrah brought up in neutral oak. Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully polished, it packs loads of fruit yet stays light on its feet, with no sensation of heaviness. As with all of these Syrahs from Smith, it’s going to benefit from 2–4 years of bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2022
An instant success, the 2018 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard is impressive and possesses layers of spiced red fruits, black raspberry and nuances of dusty floral tones that sway with precision and finesse. Medium to full-bodied, the wine offers gobs of complexity that overflow with almost immaculate accuracy before ending with a long-lingering and ever-evolving finish that persists for more than a minute. Bravo, I’m going back for another sip. (Anthony Mueller)
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022
Sourced from the Northridge vineyard on the Wahluke Slope, set on limestone soils, the 2018 Syrah The Hidden saw 50% new French oak puncheons for 22 months prior to bottling. Wet stone and creosote tones combine with bright red fruits on the nose. The palate is fresh and viscous, with lovely tension that runs through a core of medium-bodied dark fruits, and salty and stony undertones. Gorgeous to consume now, this well-balanced wine has another 8-10 years ahead of it.

    RP97+97–99+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Nov 2019
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyard barrel sample explodes form the glass with an incredible array of classic Syrah notes: black cherries, black plums, blackberries and licorice with hints of garrigue, tar, bouquet garni and bacon fat. Full-bodied, the palate is equally atomic, with bags of expressive black fruits and meaty/peppery hints framed by ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long, refreshing and oh-so-spicy.
    VN94+94–97 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Syrah Hudson Vineyards is remarkably primary and yet, texturally, it is a wine of tremendous polish and sophistication. Today, it is the wine’s persistence that is most impressive. Like most of the 2018s here, the Syrah is light on its feet, nuanced and all about finesse. I can’t wait to see it in another year.

This has a very alluring ganache edge, which melds nicely into the core of crushed plum, blackberry and currant notes.
