Shop Our Selection of US Wines

The history of US winemaking dates back to the 1600s, when colonists planted vineyards in Virginia and, soon after, Pennsylvania. Early attempts met with considerable hardship, however, as settlers didn't care for the taste of some of the native American grapes and European vines shipped in were often destroyed by pests and vine disease. It wasn't until the 1800s that commercially successful wineries started to take hold in the U.S., only to have their growth stunted by more vine epidemics in the late 1800s, and later by Prohibition.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, US winemaking gradually recovered. In the 1970s and 80s, California wineries started to make waves in the international market. Today the United States is one of the world's foremost wine producers, ranking behind only France, Italy and Spain in total wine production.

The vast majority of US wine production comes from the West Coast, and the vast majority of that is from California wineries, which produce almost nine out of every 10 bottles made in the U.S. Washington and Oregon wineries are also significant producers, and New York wineries are beginning to establish a reputation for fine wines, with Finger Lakes wines and Niagara Escarpment wines earning critical acclaim.

  1. Old Soul Cabernet Sauvignon

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#42691

    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
Fun and quaffable, this ruby-red wine imparts aromas and flavors of chocolate, black cherry, blackberry, boysenberry, vanilla, fennel and a hint of flaky pastry. Tannins are assertive, but well balanced, giving the wine structure. They are perfectly matched with the ripe, juicy—almost jammy—flavors of the fruits, which take front and center stage throughout the tasting. (Stacy Briscoe)

  4. Wölffer Estate Rosé

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#57418

    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th May 2022
The 2021 Rosé (colloquially known as the Estate Rosé, although "Estate" is not on the label) is a blend of 53% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Chardonnay, plus Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir equally dividing the rest. It is near bone dry and comes in at 12.8% alcohol. This report shows a lot of erratic performances in pinks in the difficult 2021 vintage, but the stalwarts are basically getting it right. This is another fine performance in the “basic” Rosé this year, not missing a beat. It has elegance, persistence, good concentration, fine flavor and touch of complexity from the kitchen-sink blend. Under screw cap, this should also hold for a few years, but that’s not exactly the point here. As top pinks go, this is also very reasonably priced. Bargain hunters take note. This is never my favorite of the winery’s endless number of pinks, but it is arguably the best intersection of quality and price. For those who appreciate elegance, it is also one of the more understated. There were 31,500 cases produced.

  5. Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval Vineyard

    2011 / 750 ml. | Item#40514

    ST93+93+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2014
Bright red-ruby. Sexy aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice, along with a musky soil-driven nuance. Rich, thick and sweet; wonderfully plush and seamless for a Bordeaux blend from this cool year, with a texture of liquid silk. Already very showy, this superb wine’s serious building tannins promise a slow evolution in bottle. A great expression of this outstanding vineyard, and seemingly even richer in the early going than the superb 2010 was a year ago.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Jun 2014
One of the top wines in the vintage, the 2011 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard (52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot that spent 21 months in 35% new French oak) offers thrilling amounts of fruit and texture, with full-bodied richness, excellent mid-palate depth and sweet tannin. Loaded with both red and black currant fruit, dried flowers, damp earth and hints of meatiness, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 10–12 years.

  13. Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58304

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
Always a smoking value that readers shouldn’t miss, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature sports a dense purple color to go with beautiful cassis and blueberry-like fruits as well as bouquet garni, spice, and obvious, rocky mineral-like aromas and flavors. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with notable structure and good acidity, it’s going to keep for two decades in cold cellars. It’s a candidate for the best Napa Cabernet under $100. 18,000 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec and 3% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps with open-knit notes of warm cassis and plum preserves, plus hints of tobacco leaf, bouquet garni and cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is firm and crunchy with bags of bright fruit and a grainy texture, finishing lifted. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a terrific wine and a big overachiever in its price range. Black cherry, plum, mocha, lavender, spice, licorice and new leather lend tons of complexity to this bold, luscious Cabernet. This overt, upfront Cabernet offers plenty of near and medium-term appeal. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Packs an alluring, winey feel, with a well of cassis and plum reduction laced with hints of cocoa, tobacco and singed cedar. Picks up a cast iron note on the finish, giving this just a bit of muscle as the fruit plays out. Best from 2023 through 2036. 18,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)
