The history of US winemaking dates back to the 1600s, when colonists planted vineyards in Virginia and, soon after, Pennsylvania. Early attempts met with considerable hardship, however, as settlers didn't care for the taste of some of the native American grapes and European vines shipped in were often destroyed by pests and vine disease. It wasn't until the 1800s that commercially successful wineries started to take hold in the U.S., only to have their growth stunted by more vine epidemics in the late 1800s, and later by Prohibition.
Following the repeal of Prohibition, US winemaking gradually recovered. In the 1970s and 80s, California wineries started to make waves in the international market. Today the United States is one of the world's foremost wine producers, ranking behind only France, Italy and Spain in total wine production.
The vast majority of US wine production comes from the West Coast, and the vast majority of that is from California wineries, which produce almost nine out of every 10 bottles made in the U.S. Washington and Oregon wineries are also significant producers, and New York wineries are beginning to establish a reputation for fine wines, with Finger Lakes wines and Niagara Escarpment wines earning critical acclaim.

The 2014 is a wine built on energy and aromatics that won’t hit its stride until at least age ten.RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016 The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from his vineyard high on Spring Mountain is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It seems slightly more approachable and civilized for a young Togni wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, loads of blackcurrant, licorice, and graphite, some earth and spice, but very subtle earth nuances. It is full-bodied and rich, but the tannins are well-integrated and don’t scream as loudly as some vintages of Togni can. For Togni, this is probably one of his more forward and precociously styled Cabernets. It will probably approach drinkability in several years, but don’t discount its aging potential, as this easily has 20–25 years of cellaring potential.
VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2016 The 2014 Carlisle Vineyard is one of the more structured, driving wines in the lineup. Today, my impression is of a tightly wound, powerful red that is going to need time to come together. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint are all pushed forward, but the 2014 needs time. The only question is how much. This is a distinctly red fruit-toned version of the Carlisle.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015 From Mike Officer’s home vineyard, the 2014 Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard (planted in 1927) tips the scales at a whopping 14.9% alcohol, but hides it beneath a cascade of beautiful briary, raspberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It’s full-bodied, deliciously pure, ripe and a total hedonistic turn-on. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.

Super-opaque purple in color, this cuvée is provocative and world-class. Inky purple in color, with crème de cassis, blackberry, espresso, graphite and a touch of oak, the wine is full-bodied, extremely rich and pure with wonderfully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol. The finish goes on for 50+ seconds. Full-bodied and jam-packed with muscular black fruit, it has a very firm, ripe, fine-grained tannic backbone and a long, pure-fruited finish. 200 cases were made.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2016 The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is super-refined, polished and articulate, with mid-weight structure and fine overall balance. Readers should expect a somewhat laid-back wine by Dalla Valle’s standards. In 2014, the Cabernet Sauvignon is especially aromatic and nuanced. It should drink well with minimal cellaring.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2017 Checking in as a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 35% Syrah and the balance Grenache, the 2014 Parvata (this is a Sanskrit word meaning rocks and stones) dishes up awesome notes of blueberries, liquid violets, barbecued meats and peppery spice to go with a full-bodied and rich yet still tight and focused style on the palate. This is a beautiful, incredibly pure GSM blend from winemaker Todd Alexander that will benefit from a year or two in bottle and keep for a decade. It’s one of the best GSM blends coming out of Washington. Give it a decant if drinking anytime soon.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016 A blend of 72% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Firebelle finished at 14.9% alcohol. It is a beautifully rich, chocolaty wine with notes of savory spices, black cherries and mulberries, some fudge and coffee bean. It has medium to full body, outstanding purity, concentration and length. It was aged in 66% new French oak for 19 months prior to bottling. Drink it over the next 15–20 years.VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015 A precise, aromatically lifted wine, the 2014 Firebelle boasts striking finesse and overall delineation. Hints of lavender, spice and mint meld into a core of super-expressive dark red and bluish fruits. Here, too, the comparison with the 2013 is telling. There is plenty of potential, that much is clear.

Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc from the sandy Bale Loam soils of the 110 acres Larkmead possesses, it is a bigger boy at 14.9% alcohol but shows lots of crushed rock and wet gravel minerality, a beautiful, cedary, blackcurrant nose with notes of forest floor, allspice and soy, with more blackberry on the palate as well as some savory herbs and spice. Up there with the of the top vintages of the cuvee, this full-bodied, rounded and hedonistic 2014 shines in the vintage, has no hard edges, gorgeous purity, and plenty of ripe, sweet tannin. Alluring, high-toned aromas of cassis, boysenberry and gingerbread spices. The final blend Seillan produced in 2014 was 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. This is a compellingly great effort once again. Reminding me of a top vintage of Ducru-Beaucaillou (the 2010?) with its classic Cabernet character, it offers thrilling notes of crème de cassis, exotic flowers, liquid rock-like minerality, and graphite and lead pencil nuances. Deep, concentrated, and backward, it has perfect balance, good acidity, and an undeniable Bordeaux-like weight and texture. A final kick of Cabernet Sauvignon intensity adds lift in the 2014 La Joie, Vérité’s Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend.
