The history of US winemaking dates back to the 1600s, when colonists planted vineyards in Virginia and, soon after, Pennsylvania. Early attempts met with considerable hardship, however, as settlers didn't care for the taste of some of the native American grapes and European vines shipped in were often destroyed by pests and vine disease. It wasn't until the 1800s that commercially successful wineries started to take hold in the U.S., only to have their growth stunted by more vine epidemics in the late 1800s, and later by Prohibition.
Following the repeal of Prohibition, US winemaking gradually recovered. In the 1970s and 80s, California wineries started to make waves in the international market. Today the United States is one of the world's foremost wine producers, ranking behind only France, Italy and Spain in total wine production.
The vast majority of US wine production comes from the West Coast, and the vast majority of that is from California wineries, which produce almost nine out of every 10 bottles made in the U.S. Washington and Oregon wineries are also significant producers, and New York wineries are beginning to establish a reputation for fine wines, with Finger Lakes wines and Niagara Escarpment wines earning critical acclaim.

Rich, pliant and explosive, the 2021 possesses captivating inner perfume, vivid fruit and exceptional balance. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, mocha and a kiss of new oak all race across the palate. An alluring, captivating wine, the Pagani Ranch is total sensuality. As good as the 2021 is—and it is very good—it could have been legendary. That is especially evident when looking at wines from Bedrock and Old Hill, two of the other grand crus of this stretch of vineyards in Sonoma Valley. Rita Hills releases, the 2020 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard has a complex bouquet of spiced red berry fruits as well as forest floor, loamy earth, baking spices, and some sea-like brine and iron nuances. Beautiful on the palate, it’s tight, structured, and focused, with medium to full-bodied richness, present tannins, and a great finish. It needs a year or two, but this is brilliant juice. It captures all the lift and savory intensity typical of this site but with the added fruit concentration and depth that are such Paul Lato signatures. Crushed rose petal, mint, dried herbs and red-fleshed fruit abound. This is one of the more restrained Pinots in the Lato portfolio, in relative terms. (Antonio Galloni)

In 2019, the Merlot includes fruit from a site in Carneros, and that seams to add an extra dimension of energy that is quite appealing. Dried herbs, leather, tobacco and crushed flowers lend striking aromatic nuance to this savory, beautifully delineated wine. The 2019 is super distinctive, not to mention a real pleasure to taste. I would give it a few years to settle down, but all the elements are in place. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers, sage and crushed rocks abound in this striking, riveting Chardonnay. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal and spice give the 2019 striking inner sweetness and perfume. In this vintage, the El Dorado is a bit lighter in feel than it has been in the past. I imagine that is partly a reflection of the year and also the result of a reduction in carbonic maceration in the winemaking.

VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard is the greatest wine I have ever tasted from Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts. It emerges from Roberts’ home vineyard in the Taylor Lane district that includes other notable vineyards such as Summa and Thieriot. The Que Syrah dazzles from the very first taste. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint and rose petals all soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply captivating. At times, the 2021 has a Pinot-like finesse, but the Syrah aromatics and structure are there, buried underneath the fruit. The 2021 is totally dialed in. It’s a magical wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to find it. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Medium ruby-red. Aromas of blackcurrant, dark raspberry, espresso, bitter chocolate and graphite. Silky and plush but also vinous on entry, then densely packed, seamless and deep in the middle, with savory red and blacker fruit flavors complicated by subtle brown spices and minerals. Conveys excellent inner-mouth peppery lift and vinosity without coming across as green. This wine struck me as quite similar to its 2015 predecessor, suggesting that owner/winemaker Greg Harrington was especially successful in avoiding obvious signs of the very hot 2015 growing season. This savory, classically dry, energetic Cabernet Sauvignon finishes with firm, suave tannins and slowly mounting persistence.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Red Wine California is a new Bordeaux-based red wine that Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts made initially to take the place of the 2020 Cabernets that would have been released around this time but were compromised by smoke. The Red Wine was initially intended to be a fun project, but Arnot and Roberts may have stumbled into what is really a pretty serious red with real potential. The 2021 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (Massa, Bedrock and Gordenker), 20% Cabernet Franc (Persia) and 20% Merlot (Massa). A powerful, old-school wine, the 2021 is going to need a few years to shed some tannin. I loved it. (Antonio Galloni)
