The history of US winemaking dates back to the 1600s, when colonists planted vineyards in Virginia and, soon after, Pennsylvania. Early attempts met with considerable hardship, however, as settlers didn't care for the taste of some of the native American grapes and European vines shipped in were often destroyed by pests and vine disease. It wasn't until the 1800s that commercially successful wineries started to take hold in the U.S., only to have their growth stunted by more vine epidemics in the late 1800s, and later by Prohibition.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, US winemaking gradually recovered. In the 1970s and 80s, California wineries started to make waves in the international market. Today the United States is one of the world's foremost wine producers, ranking behind only France, Italy and Spain in total wine production.

The vast majority of US wine production comes from the West Coast, and the vast majority of that is from California wineries, which produce almost nine out of every 10 bottles made in the U.S. Washington and Oregon wineries are also significant producers, and New York wineries are beginning to establish a reputation for fine wines, with Finger Lakes wines and Niagara Escarpment wines earning critical acclaim.

A well-balanced Pinot Noir with a high glug-ability factor and a great bang-for-the-buck value. Find pronounced aromas and flavors of wild strawberries, forest floor, crushed roses and violets, red and black cherry, pomegranate, rhubarb, fennel, tarragon and just a touch of damp tree bark. WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022
Significantly tannic but also flavorful enough to pull it off, this full-bodied wine is a good candidate for further aging. It brims with black currant, graphite and black cherry flavors that are vivid but not overblown, achieving good balance and complexity. Aged for 18 months in 40% new Hungarian oak barrels, it should be best from 2026. (Jim Gordon)

  12. Hudson Chardonnay

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59797

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023
Impressive for the generous, plump flavors and the restraint and elegance of the candied ginger peel, briny preserved lemon, peppery white flower and buttery peach pastry flavors on a plush frame. Reveals a juicy thread of acidity. Drink now. 1,638 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
    RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023
Tasted as a tank sample prior to bottling, the barrel-fermented 2021 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard displays a full-bodied, rich, custardy mouthfeel that easily carries the bold flavors of pineapple, white peach and citrus. It’s a blend of several blocks and sees approximately 60% new French oak. (Joe Czerwinski)

  13. Arnot-Roberts Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is a model of precision and class. Pure and crystalline, the 2021 is superb. I would give it a few years to settle down, but all the elements are in place. Lemon peel, chalk, mint, white flowers, sage and crushed rocks abound in this striking, riveting Chardonnay. The 2021 is just pristine. This is what Trout Gulch Chardonnay is all about. (Antonio Galloni)

  14. Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#60751

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - May 2022
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine to focus on in this range in 2018. Dark and brooding, the 2018 is such a classic Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet. It offers up copious black fruit, dried herbs, chocolate, lavender and underbrush, all in a super-classic, mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. This might very well be the best value in artisan, high-end California Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)
    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022
Subtle aromas of dark cherry, toasted mahogany and roasted nut are very balanced on the nose of this bottling. The palate offers incense and potpourri flavors against a fresh red-fruit element. On the spicy, peppery finish, the leathery tannins continue their grip. (Matt Kettmann)
