This Sunday is the last day for our Double Up for a Buck.  So now is the time to stock up for your Halloween party.  New to our sale are two very well made French wines: Les Argelieres Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  Both of these wines will run you $8.00 per bottle with our sale which is a great deal for good French wine.

The Chardonnay is well balanced with notes of apple, pear, a hint of pineapple and creamy vanilla pudding.  There is just enough oak to give it heft for enjoying with cream laden dishes such as corn and potato chowder.  The Pinot Noir is a bit heavier and darker than many of the traditional French Burgundies, but make no mistake, this is not a jammy fruit bomb either. This Pinot has very good balance with plenty of lively raspberry, cherry fruit with slight birch beer and wet earth notes.  Try this with sweet and spicy Sloppy Joes for a solid Halloween pairing.

It’s October and fall is in full swing with changing leaves, less daylight and somewhat cooler temperatures.  This is a good time to enjoy some of the wines you’ve been meaning to try but felt the warm temperatures made them seem less enticing.

Such a wine would be the Stoller 2014 Pinot Noir from the Dundee Hills region located in the Willamette Valley AVA in Oregon. Made from estate grown grapes, this Pinot Noir is sophisticated yet approachable. On the nose there are wonderful notes of dark cherry, raspberry, clove, cinnamon and licorice. On the palate there are lingering flavors of cherry, vanilla, more spice and pepper. At around twenty-five dollars, this wine over delivers and will stand out as a Sunday dinner favorite.  Pair with grilled salmon, roasted chicken, mushroom tart appetizers and assorted hard cheeses.

Fermented in stainless steel, and aged in French oak, this is no wimpy Merlot.  Produced by Charles Smith who seems to make most things he touches interesting. The Velvet Devil Merlot is a Washington state wine that is truly Merlot with only a smidgen of Cabernet Sauvignon. Like its name, this Merlot is velvety with a mysterious, devilish blackberry jam color. On the nose there are ample dark fruits like boysenberry and blackberry along with sweet chocolate cherry with faint notes of cedar and tobacco.

Today I begin the 3 part series on Halloween treats to pour. Because of the craze for all things Apple this time of year, I thought it only appropriate to step outside the wine world and offer up a cider. There are several varieties and even flavors of alcohol based (hard) ciders that range from sweet to very dry and still to sparkling.

The lure of French value wines continues with a red Bordeaux because …well, how can it not?  How can a bargain hunting wine drinker turn down a Fall deal like this, especially a French wine with Vermont in the title?

This weekend is the conclusion of our Halloween wine picks. It is only appropriate that we finish with one of the greatest supernatural creatures of all time: the vampire. In the wine world, Vampire is an inexpensive label that produces a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir, a Merlot and of course the bloodiest of the bunch, a Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines come from California, predominately Napa, although at one time these wines were actually produced in Transylvania, Romania.

It’s October and that means Halloween is coming. To honor one of my favorite holidays, I will be discussing an appropriately themed value wine each weekend. This weekend I am offering up Werewolf Merlot.

I must be honest; this is not the best of my offerings, but it is so kitschy, I couldn’t resist. Werewolf Merlot is actually produced in Transylvania, Romania. That’s right, in the Carpathian Mountains where garlic and silver could be your best friends. On the nose Werewolf is full of dark fruit, including plums and has a whiff of green pepper. The full body, strong unsweetened cherry and faint pepper notes make this a wine to drink casually or with a hearty fall stew.
