Grenache, a spicy wine with versatility, is one of the world’s most widely planted red grape varieties, yet one of the least recognized by many consumers. We're on a mission to change that, since we love Grenache wines and think that you will, too.
Because of the late-ripening nature of Grenache, it is almost exclusively grown in warmer, arid, and Mediterranean-like climates. It's a featured grape in Spain (where it goes by the name "Garnacha") and in France's Southern Rhone wines, and can also be found in Australia, the Italian island of Sardinia (where it is called "Cannonau"), and warmer climate areas in California and Washington state. There are even several outstanding versions of Grenache rosé out there, which shouldn't be ignored.

JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019 Moving to the reds and starting with the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape (a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, and other permitted varieties), this wine has a terrific sense of purity and elegance in its black and blue fruits, sappy flowers, and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium-bodied, finesse-oriented wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length. This is a classic, traditional cuvée done brilliantly. While it has the upfront style of the vintage front and center, it’s still going to evolve beautifully on its balance and purity. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied, plush and creamy textured without coming across as heavy, finishing supple and long. While some may find it over the top, for me, it retains a sense of balance in the tension between the sense of ripeness and its delicate herbal nuances. It won’t be terribly long-lived but should drink at its delicious best over the next 6–8 years.VN90+90–93 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Limpid ruby-red. Spice-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by building floral and mineral nuances. Finishes supple and long, with lingering floral and spice notes and subtle tannins that lend shape and gentle grip.

Best enjoyed now–2024.JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 Mostly Grenache blended with roughly 30% Syrah, brought up all in tank, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Haut De Brun is another terrific release from this estate that delivers loads of pleasure for not much buck. Impressive red and black fruits, notes of peppery garrigue, and earth, medium-bodied richness, and a juicy, gulpable style all make for a seriously good Côtes du Rhône to enjoy over the coming 3–5 years. It’s medium to full-bodied, shows some soft, velvety tannins, and displays admirable purity on the finish.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022 The 2021 Laya was produced with 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, looking for a fruit-driven and easy to drink red with 14.5% alcohol, ripe fruit and a soft texture. 2021 was warmer than the average but with some cold spells, especially the one in January called Filomena that brought lots of snow, despite which, it was also a dry year and they got up to 40% less grapes. This fermented in stainless steel vats with neutral yeasts, with malolactic in barrel, where the wine matured for four months. This shows some toasty oak, but it might be because it’s too young and very recently bottled. But vintages seem to take oak differently; they believe this will show as integrated as the 2020. Time will tell. In any case, it’s a wine for the short term, and it’s very good for what it is. 360,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 Saturated ruby. Deep-pitched red/blue fruit liqueur aromas pick up suggestions of licorice, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers and herbs with air. In a lush, weighty style, offering expansive black raspberry, cherry cola, singed plum and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half. For all this wine’s richness, it’s energetic as well, showing solid, spice- and floral-driven persistence on the finish, which is framed by velvety, even tannins.JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is ruby/purple-hued and has the classic translucent color of the domaine. It’s more precise and focused than the Télégramme and will need more time, but it offers a complex, gorgeous bouquet of red and black fruits, crushed stone, wild fennel, and ground pepper. Pure, medium to full-bodied, and elegant, do your best to hide bottles for 5–7 years and it’s going to keep for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Nov 2021 The incredibly young and juicy 2020 Garnacha was produced with grapes from different villages, Corella, Cintruénigo, Fitero and Lerga, hence a regional blend that for the first time contains grapes from the cooler Lerga that adds lower pH, more freshness and complexity to the blend. They do a soft extraction in stainless steel using 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, achieving a wine with moderate alcohol (13.47%) and good freshness (pH 3.47). I felt like the wine had gone one step up in complexity and depth from the previous vintage; it’s precise, harmonious, elegant and nuanced and keeps varietal purity. It’s medium-bodied and has very fine tannins with herbal freshness, reminiscent of acid berries and bay leaf. This is a steal! One to buy by the case… 137,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 1, 2018 A little gem of a wine is the 2017 Côtes Catalanes Roubials from Saint Roch, which is mostly Grenache mixed with 10% Mourvèdre, brought up in 20% new barrels. It has loads of fresh blackberry and blueberry fruits intermixed with plenty of violets, leafy herbs, and charcoal aromas and flavors. Drink this medium-bodied, pure, seamless beauty over the coming 5–7 years. Black cherries dominate the nose, while the palate is slightly earthier. Full-bodied, dense and tannic, it could use another year in the bottle to loosen up, but the tannins are soft, so there’s no real need to defer gratification.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2022 The 2019 Laurel is quite closed and shows serious and shy. It’s made with all the grapes that are not used for Clos Erasmus—young vines, the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon (no more than 5%), mostly Garnacha and some 15% Syrah. The wine matured mostly in 2,000-liter oak vats, concrete and some barrels (she’s abandoning the tinaja). It’s 15% alcohol but has very good freshness. The wine is round and powerful but very harmonious and with good freshness. It’s medium to full-bodied and nicely textured, with abundant, glossy tannins and fantastic balance. This is both powerful and elegant. It slowly opens up in the glass to ripe berries, spice and herbs and a touch of smoke. 18,700 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 Due to yields, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes doesn’t include any grapes from the Gallimardes lieu-dit, so this vintage only includes Charbonnière and Esqueirons grapes. As always, it’s 100% Grenache brought up in a mix of concrete tank and foudre. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a brilliant array of blueberries, violets, and pepper, and it’s full-bodied, has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. I’d put it up with the top handful of wines in the vintage. In spite of the decadent fruit profile, this has a nice framework and lovely salinity driving freshness and impressive length. A blockbuster red with staying power. Sappy black raspberry and cherry flavors show good depth as well as energy. Silky and appealingly sweet, finishing with sharp focus and smooth tannins that fold into the wine’s juicy fruit. JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 The deeper hued 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet checks in as a blend of 75% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah that saw plenty of stems and aging mostly in foudre, with a small part in demi-muids and barrique. Straight-up sensational notes of blackcurrants, ground pepper, garrigue, leather, and graphite emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, dense, powerful mouthfeel, building tannins, and a brilliant finish. It’s built for the long haul, and along with the 2016, it’s one of the finest wines I’ve tasted from this talented family. Hide bottles for 7–8 years and enjoy over the following 20–25+. In a lively style, finishing sweet, floral and extremely long, with fine-grained tannins adding final grip.

Vibrant, spice-accented aromas of raspberry and cherry liqueur, incense and pungent flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Deep-pitched yet impressively lively as well, offering intense red and dark berry liqueur and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate and show superb clarity and minerally lift. Closes extremely long, focused and lively, with silky tannins framing the wine’s sweet fruit. This is about as good as a "basic" Châteauneuf gets.JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed beautifully, with a deeper ruby/purple color as well as incredible Provençal notes of peppery garrigue, dried flowers, and jammy red and black berry fruits. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a great mid-palate, loads of building tannins, a solid spine of acidity, and a big finish. This is one smoking good, classic cuvée that savvy readers should snatch up. It will have 10–15 years of prime drinking.
