Grenache, a spicy wine with versatility, is one of the world’s most widely planted red grape varieties, yet one of the least recognized by many consumers. We're on a mission to change that, since we love Grenache wines and think that you will, too.
Because of the late-ripening nature of Grenache, it is almost exclusively grown in warmer, arid, and Mediterranean-like climates. It's a featured grape in Spain (where it goes by the name "Garnacha") and in France's Southern Rhone wines, and can also be found in Australia, the Italian island of Sardinia (where it is called "Cannonau"), and warmer climate areas in California and Washington state. There are even several outstanding versions of Grenache rosé out there, which shouldn't be ignored.

WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2012 A prodigious effort, the 2009 Vieilles Vignes from Grand Veneur includes a whopping 40% Mourvèdre in the blend (there’s also 10% Syrah, with the balance being Grenache), which no doubt accounts for its dark flavor profile. This is a full-bodied, lushly textured, expansive wine, with a finish that seems to go on forever. Approachable now, it should age well for 10–12 years at least.RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2010 The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (a cuvee that was first made in 2006) is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah, all aged in new oak casks. Despite all the new oak, its influence is marginal. Some toasty notes are present, but the wine is very full-bodied with extraordinarily intense aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, kirsch, lavender, licorice and hints of lead pencil shavings and smoke. Dense, full-bodied, tannic and super intense, this is a massive 2009 that begs for 4–5 years of cellaring. It should drink well for 20–25 years thereafter.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022 Mainly Grenache, with the balance a blend of Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone offers up notions of ripe cherries, garrigue and even a few modest hints of pine sap. Medium to full-bodied, it’s concentrated and ripe yet silky and reasonably elegant. Drink it over the next several years.
RP88+88–90 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th Dec 2020 Plums, black cherries and hints of garrigue mark the nose of the 2019 Cotes du Rhone les 3 Soeurs, a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It’s medium to full-bodied, with soft masses of ripe tannin that impart a plush mouthfeel and linger easily on the finish. As always with this cuvée, I’d opt for drinking it on the young side.
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019 Moving to the reds and starting with the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape (a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 9% Mourvèdre, and the balance Cinsault, Terret Noir, Muscardin, and other permitted varieties), this wine has a terrific sense of purity and elegance in its black and blue fruits, sappy flowers, and peppery garrigue aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium-bodied, finesse-oriented wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length. This is a classic, traditional cuvée done brilliantly. While it has the upfront style of the vintage front and center, it’s still going to evolve beautifully on its balance and purity. In the mouth, it’s full-bodied, plush and creamy textured without coming across as heavy, finishing supple and long. While some may find it over the top, for me, it retains a sense of balance in the tension between the sense of ripeness and its delicate herbal nuances. It won’t be terribly long-lived but should drink at its delicious best over the next 6–8 years.VN90+90–93 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Limpid ruby-red. Spice-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by building floral and mineral nuances. Alluringly sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering lively black raspberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and baking spice flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes supple and long, with lingering floral and spice notes and subtle tannins that lend shape and gentle grip.

Best enjoyed now–2024.JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 Mostly Grenache blended with roughly 30% Syrah, brought up all in tank, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Haut De Brun is another terrific release from this estate that delivers loads of pleasure for not much buck. Impressive red and black fruits, notes of peppery garrigue, and earth, medium-bodied richness, and a juicy, gulpable style all make for a seriously good Côtes du Rhône to enjoy over the coming 3–5 years. It’s medium to full-bodied, shows some soft, velvety tannins, and displays admirable purity on the finish.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022 The 2021 Laya was produced with 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, looking for a fruit-driven and easy to drink red with 14.5% alcohol, ripe fruit and a soft texture. 2021 was warmer than the average but with some cold spells, especially the one in January called Filomena that brought lots of snow, despite which, it was also a dry year and they got up to 40% less grapes. This fermented in stainless steel vats with neutral yeasts, with malolactic in barrel, where the wine matured for four months. This shows some toasty oak, but it might be because it’s too young and very recently bottled. But vintages seem to take oak differently; they believe this will show as integrated as the 2020. Time will tell. In any case, it’s a wine for the short term, and it’s very good for what it is. 360,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Nov 2021 The incredibly young and juicy 2020 Garnacha was produced with grapes from different villages, Corella, Cintruénigo, Fitero and Lerga, hence a regional blend that for the first time contains grapes from the cooler Lerga that adds lower pH, more freshness and complexity to the blend. They do a soft extraction in stainless steel using 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, achieving a wine with moderate alcohol (13.47%) and good freshness (pH 3.47). I felt like the wine had gone one step up in complexity and depth from the previous vintage; it’s precise, harmonious, elegant and nuanced and keeps varietal purity. It’s medium-bodied and has very fine tannins with herbal freshness, reminiscent of acid berries and bay leaf. This is a steal! One to buy by the case… 137,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 1, 2018 A little gem of a wine is the 2017 Côtes Catalanes Roubials from Saint Roch, which is mostly Grenache mixed with 10% Mourvèdre, brought up in 20% new barrels. It has loads of fresh blackberry and blueberry fruits intermixed with plenty of violets, leafy herbs, and charcoal aromas and flavors. Drink this medium-bodied, pure, seamless beauty over the coming 5–7 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2019 Mainly Grenache, the 2017 Roubials is another fine example of the good work being done at this property. Black cherries dominate the nose, while the palate is slightly earthier. Full-bodied, dense and tannic, it could use another year in the bottle to loosen up, but the tannins are soft, so there’s no real need to defer gratification.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2022 The 2019 Laurel is quite closed and shows serious and shy. It’s made with all the grapes that are not used for Clos Erasmus—young vines, the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon (no more than 5%), mostly Garnacha and some 15% Syrah. The wine matured mostly in 2,000-liter oak vats, concrete and some barrels (she’s abandoning the tinaja). It’s 15% alcohol but has very good freshness. The wine is round and powerful but very harmonious and with good freshness. It’s medium to full-bodied and nicely textured, with abundant, glossy tannins and fantastic balance. This is both powerful and elegant. It slowly opens up in the glass to ripe berries, spice and herbs and a touch of smoke. 18,700 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 28, 2018 Bottled in March, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (80% Grenache) was brought up in a mix of concrete (mostly) and foudre. It gives up sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, white flowers, graphite, candle wax, and spice. This rich, full-bodied, yet seamless Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a powerful, balanced style that’s going to keep for 15–20 years. It’s a gorgeous wine. Highly perfumed red fruit liqueur, potpourri and Moroccan spice scents show impressive vivacity and focus. Sappy, alluringly sweet and precise, offering palate-staining raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a hint of spicecake. Closes very long and smooth, displaying excellent focus, even tannins and emphatic, floral-tinged persistence.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Sep 2021 A blend of 82% Grenache and 18% Syrah, the 2019 IGP Cotes Catalanes Narassa spent 15 months in a 50-50 mix of tank and demi-muids (15% new). Black cherries and blueberries mingle easily on the nose, joined by hints of maple syrup and licorice. Full-bodied, velvety and super-ripe, it comes across as almost sweet on the lingering finish. Personally, I’d serve it late in the meal, perhaps alongside a well-aged Parmiggiano or similar cheese.

Their 2018 Côtes Du Rhône is well worth seeking out and has a medium-bodied, round, silky style as well as textbook peppery herbs, violets, bouquet garni, and both red and black fruits. It shows the supple, charming, forward style of the vintage and is ideal for drinking over the coming 4–5 years. RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Nov 2020 The 2019 La Bruja de Rozas was one of the few 2019s already bottled when I tasted the whole range in November 2020. This is a village Garnacha from Las Rozas de Puerto Real, their first approach to the grape, trying to capture the essence of the fresh fruit and the fluidity of the wine. 2019 is a ripe vintage, and the wine is a little more powerful, juicy and balanced, with rich aromas and flavors. It comes from different plots of old vines ranging from 40 to 65 years of age and planted at some 900 meters in altitude on sandy granite soils in a zone that has plenty of rain, averaging 800 liters per year. Like all of their vineyards, these plots are worked organically and biodynamically. Each vineyard fermented separately in oak vats with indigenous yeasts with a soft maceration. The wine matured in oak vats of different sizes, ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 liters. The 2019 effect seems to be quite mild here; the wine follows the profile of the 2018, despite being a little riper, and it’s still very balanced. There are notes of flowers, basil and a touch of bacon intermixed with the wild berries and herbs. There’s a little more concentration, and the tannins are a little chalkier and more austere. But there is no excess ripeness or anything out of place, and it has acidity and length and finishes dry and mineral. 41,853 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020 Another terrific effort from this estate, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina shares a sense of elegance with its vintage stablemate, the La Combe des Fous. Kirsch, stone fruit, black cherries, licorice, pomegranate… the list could go on and on. And while the wine is undeniably full-bodied, it doesn’t come across as heavy or hot, instead being built on a lacy, silky structure of fine tannins and rounded acids that linger on the finish.JD95+95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 6, 2020 As always, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that saw the Grenache aged all in concrete tanks and the Mourvèdre new barrels. This richer, full-bodied, meaty 2018 boasts a fabulous mid-palate as well as a complex nose of cured meats, toasted spices, peppery garrigue, loamy earth, blackcurrants, and blackberries. It certainly displays the more forward, seamless style of the vintage, yet still brings plenty of power and richness as well as length on the finish. It’s beautifully done yet unquestionably a more forward, approachable vintage for this cuvée. Give bottles 1–2 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15 years or so. Youthfully chewy and concentrated on the palate, offering sweet dark berry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors sharpened by building spice and mineral flourishes. Rich yet energetic in style, finishing with excellent clarity and dusty tannins that sneak in late.
