Grenache, a spicy wine with versatility, is one of the world’s most widely planted red grape varieties, yet one of the least recognized by many consumers. We're on a mission to change that, since we love Grenache wines and think that you will, too.

Because of the late-ripening nature of Grenache, it is almost exclusively grown in warmer, arid, and Mediterranean-like climates. It's a featured grape in Spain (where it goes by the name "Garnacha") and in France's Southern Rhone wines, and can also be found in Australia, the Italian island of Sardinia (where it is called "Cannonau"), and warmer climate areas in California and Washington state. There are even several outstanding versions of Grenache rosé out there, which shouldn't be ignored.

  7. Laya Red Blend

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59607

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2022
The 2021 Laya was produced with 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, looking for a fruit-driven and easy to drink red with 14.5% alcohol, ripe fruit and a soft texture. 2021 was warmer than the average but with some cold spells, especially the one in January called Filomena that brought lots of snow, despite which, it was also a dry year and they got up to 40% less grapes. This fermented in stainless steel vats with neutral yeasts, with malolactic in barrel, where the wine matured for four months. This shows some toasty oak, but it might be because it’s too young and very recently bottled. But vintages seem to take oak differently; they believe this will show as integrated as the 2020. Time will tell. In any case, it’s a wine for the short term, and it’s very good for what it is. 360,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Rich, deep and fruity, saturated with morello cherries, sour plums, grilled Mediterranean herbs and spices. Quite fruity and generous palate with a certain amount of sweetness that makes it flattering, easy and approachable. Soft and smooth. Garnacha tintorera and monastrell. Vegan. Drink now.

  12. Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#60614

    VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
Deep magenta. High-toned cherry and blackberry aromas show very good clarity with black pepper and smoky mineral accents. Shows firm tension and a spicy cut to its gently sweet red and dark berry, bitter chocolate and succulent herb flavors. Youthfully gripping tannins lend framework to a long, smoky finish that echoes the spice and floral notes. This is textbook Gigondas, raised in a combination of one-third concrete tanks and two-thirds large oak barrels, 20% of those new. (Josh Raynolds)
    JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/16/2023
Leading off the 2021 barrel samples, the 2021 Gigondas is a juicy, elegant, medium-bodied beauty with lots of red and black fruits, some floral and violet notes, fine tannins, and kiss of salinity on the finish. It’s clearly an outstanding wine in the making and a great effort in this more challenging vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/11/2022
The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Galets De La Berthaude showed beautifully, with a perfumed, elegant style that’s very much in the character of the vintage, offering pure black raspberry fruits, notes of violets and peppery garrigue, soft tannins, and a great finish. This forward, pure, elegant effort will drink nicely right out of the gate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The only barrel sample I was able to taste, the 2021 GSM Santa Barbara County showed beautifully, and if this wine is any indication, this estate didn’t miss a beat in 2021. Giving up pretty blue fruits, peppery herbs, and sappy flower nuances, it’s medium to full-bodied, has terrific tannins, and an elegant yet textured style that will drink nicely right out of the gate. Plush and savory, with sleek raspberry, orange-tinged mocha and smoked pepper flavors that build richness and structure toward refined tannins. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2030. 1,350 cases made. (Tim Fish)

The 2021 GSM is a promising wine. Deep and beautifully layered in the glass, with terrific vibrancy, the GSM is marked by gorgeous purity in its red/purplish fruit and terrific balance. It is the only 2021 that had been racked at the time of my visit, but also a wine that portends well for the vintage if its representative of quality across the range. (Antonio Galloni)
