Sangiovese, is one Italy's two most important wine grapes (with Nebbiolo being the other) and is the most-planted grape in Italy. The Sangiovese grape is not only used to make Italy's world-famous Chiantis, but it's also the base for the cherished Super Tuscan wines, and the unbelievable wines of Brunello de Montalcino.

Not surprisingly, Sangiovese wine pairs wonderfully with Italian foods like pasta with red sauce, as well as with rare steaks, and rich chicken and/or mushroom dishes. Of course, it's also wonderful by itself!

  1. Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Pianrosso Brunello di Montalcino

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#59723

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
A special single-vineyard wine with origins in one of the more remote, wild and beautiful corners of Montalcino, this is one of the true treats of the appellation. The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens to a medium-rich appearance and vibrant color saturation. Sangiovese can lose its color quickly, but it remains beautifully intact here. Sweet cherry, redcurrant, spice, blue flower, balsam herb and orange peel are neatly woven together to create this balanced wine. Fruit is sourced from across a 11.7-hectare vineyard with schistous galestro soils. Production is 37,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
Dark depths of crushed plums and black cherries are offset by notes of rosemary, spiced citrus peels and hints of cocoa as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens in the glass. This is an especially racy style for Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, with cooling mineral tones and zesty acidity propelling its ripe berry fruit and hints of sour citrus across the palate. While structured, this finishes with tremendous energy and freshness, leaving the mouth watering with a lingering bitter hint of balsamic spice. The 2018 may not possess the power often associated with the Pianrosso, but it instead impresses with its lively and spicy character. (Eric Guido)

Cracked chalk, wild herbs and tart black cherries define the bouquet of the 2018 Rosso. It’s soft-textured and lifted in feel, with a burst of inner sweetness that gives way to notes of wild strawberry and mint. This tapers off with medium length and juicy, leaving nuances of blackberry and violet pastille. (Eric Guido)

Plenty of sweet berries and cherries with hints of burnt orange. It’s medium-bodied with a caressing, creamy structure. Pretty fruit at the end. Balanced and beautiful. Always satisfies. Drink now.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
The hot 2020 vintage recorded one of the earliest harvests in Fattoria le Pupille’s history. Their easy-drinking 2020 Morellino di Scansano delivers lots of soft cherry and sweet ripeness. This Sangiovese-based wine also shows Mediterranean herb and wild rose. These are fresh and immediate results to pair with a plate of cheese ravioli in sage and butter sauce. The wine concludes with a soft, accessible personality.

The 2019 Morellino di Scansano Riserva offers up sweet red cherry, tobacco, spice, leather, mint and incense. Medium in body, with lovely aromatic nuance, the 2019 is already showing some signs of development. For that reason, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later. (Antonio Galloni)

  7. Fattoria Le Pupille Poggio Valente

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57741

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
This wine always stands out in my mind, and it’s worth dedicating a few words as to why. Poggio Valente offers us a rare opportunity to taste Sangiovese made according to the highest standards but from a territory — on the Tuscan Coast — that does not share a big legacy with monovarietal Sangiovese reds. The Fattoria le Pupille 2019 Poggio Valente was born in a happy vintage with a cool spring and a growing season that had plenty of underground water reserves to keep the vines hydrated well until the end of August. This is a full and generous wine with dark cherry and wild plum aromas that segue to tar, licorice and crushed slate. My sample (tasted a few weeks after bottling) was a little shy initially, but it quickly blossomed in the glass.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Poggio Valente is gorgeous. Bright and vibrant in the glass with terrific energy, the Poggio Valente is a fine example of the style favored here these days. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, spice and orange zest complement a core of Sangiovese fruit. I especially like the vibrancy here. The 2019 is absolutely delicious. That’s all there is to it.

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 4, 2022
Plums, cherry stones, button mushrooms, white pepper and bark on the nose. Lemon and cardamom too. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Savory. Drink now or hold.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2020 Chiarti Classico Berardenga is a classic Fèlsina wine. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10–15 years. Classic Fèlsina savory, floral and tobacco accents play off a core of sweet Sangiovese fruit. This heady, strapping wine has a ton to offer. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic presence. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A charming, harmonious Chianti Classico, this exudes cherry, plum and thyme flavors, with elements of earth and mineral. Delivers dense tannins that exert influence on the finish, yet this remains balanced. Drink now through 2028. 22,000 cases made, 15,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/28/2023
A pure and open wine out of the gate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Berardenga is fresh with aromas of pine sap, anise, and cherry lozenge. Medium bodied with fine tannin and a modest but refreshing finish, this is a fantastic entry point for the Felsina range, for casual drinking with braised meats or Bolognese. Drink 2023–2028. 10. Fèlsina Berardenga Rància Chianti Classico Riserva

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#53028

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can’t wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Aug 2020
Rancia is always one of my favorite wines from this storied appellation (and the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone). This vintage threw quite a few challenges at the winemaking team, but the Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia emerges intact, intense and beautiful. It is virtually unscathed by the heat and drought that marked this growing season. In fact, that brilliant radiance, linearity and energy of the Sangiovese grape comes through loud and clear. The bouquet is redolent of red fruit, wild berry, toasted almond, violet and potting soil. My score is a little lower (compared to past vintages) in terms of mouthfeel because I found this edition to be a bit shorter and less impactful on the finish, but not by much. It ages in barrique for up to 20 months. This vintage of Rancia saw 46,000 bottles released.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Cherry, plum, juniper, earth and chocolate flavors highlight this sleek, intense red. There is depth and length here, along with a solid structure, yet this will require time to unravel and reveal all its facets. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,300 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

  11. Fèlsina Fontalloro

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#60217

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
To my palate, the 2018 vintage sometimes feels a little too ripe or baked. I was reminded of those characteristics when tasting the Fèlsina 2018 Fontalloro. There is plenty of dark fruit at its core, but this wine also reveals dry tones of jarred oregano, grilled Mediterranean herb, crushed aspirin and graham cracker. The mouthfeel is pleasantly lean and silky, and perhaps the wine delivers more in terms of length than it does weight or texture. A little more bottle age should help flesh out and soften these results. (Monica Larner)
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2018 Fontalloro is bright, floral and full of energy. In most vintages, Fontalloro is quite open, but the 2018 is especially nervy and taut. That won’t be an issue in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. Sangiovese is so expressive here. A whole range of floral and savory accents lingers on the close. (Antonio Galloni)
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 4, 2021
A tight, fresh Fontalloro with dark cherry, chocolate and toasted oak. Some walnut, too. It’s full-bodied, yet polished and structured. Sort of shy. But this will develop really nicely with some bottle age. Drink after 2023.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Black cherry and blackberry flavors are accented by earth, rosemary and tobacco in this sleek, incisive red, which is balanced and linear, with vibrant acidity driving the long finish, where a note of iron creeps into the mix. Sangiovese. Drink now. 3,750 cases made.

  12. Frescobaldi CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#60480

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023
Elegant, with a vibrant structure shoring up cherry, raspberry, plum, earth and underbrush flavors. Turns compact on the finish, yet bright acidity and vestiges of the fruit keep this focused. Best from 2025 through 2040. 27,500 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is dusty and floral on the nose, with a mix of dried black cherries, shaved cedar and wild flowers forming its inviting bouquet. This is round, almost juicy in feel, with cooling mineral tones and brisk acidity that maintains an unexpectedly energetic character, as tart wild berry fruits slowly saturate. The 2018 finishes with grippy tannins, yet also surprisingly fresh, leaving nuances of red licorice to slowly taper off. This really took me by surprise, as I’m so accustomed to Castelgiocondo being such a brooding and powerful wine in its youth, but that is the magic of the 2018 vintage. (Eric Guido)

  13. Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#56959

    RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
Here’s a wine I am very excited to taste, given the phenomenal performance of this vintage in the annata version released last year. The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva reproduces that same brilliant intensity and deep inner brightness, only this Riserva has seen one more year of aging, and it shows more spice and thicker textural heft as a result. This wine is penetrating and layered with a harmonious playlist of red and purple fruits, spice, tar, cola, licorice and grilled herb. The tannins are more austere in the case of this 2,993-bottle release, and you’d do well to age it longer before popping the cork. I love the spontaneous radiance and energy captured by this estate, especially in 2016.
    VN97+97+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
The deep, sensual 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up with spice-dusted cherries, sweet herbs and hints of flowery undergrowth. It fills the senses with rich yet tart black raspberries and exotic spice, along with a hint of citrus that sends sparks across the palate, creating a pliant yet nicely chiseled effect. The 2016 tapers off like a black hole of structure, turning quite savory but with a coating of fine tannin that seems to devour the coating of primary fruits beneath it. Masses of tobacco and brown spice linger. The sheer density, amazing minerality and balanced acidity make the 2016 Riserva an extremely exciting wine.
    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
A beefy, muscular style, this red features black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit shaded by earth, iron and spice flavors. Reveals a tangy edge, partly from the bracing acidity, with wild herb and savory notes on the lingering finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 271 cases made, 50 cases imported.
    WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Full-bodied and savory, this offers aromas of new leather, camphor, mature dark-skinned fruit and cedar. The firmly structured palate delivers dried Marasca cherry, blood orange, mocha and licorice framed in tightly wound, close-grained tannins. Drink 2028–2036.
    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
Cherries and dried flowers on the nose with some sandalwood. Some chocolate, too. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and compact, with firm and fine tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Racy and savory. Really delicious already, but will repay patience for three or four years.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#59729

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
Alessandro Mori’s Il Marroneto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a spicy bouquet with hints of cumin and white pepper that fold seamlessly into bright cherry, blueberry and cassis. The trick to this wine is balance, as no one side pulls stronger than the other. More importantly, this Brunello still has life and vibrant energy despite 39 months of aging in oak casks. Precisely because this bottle tastes so good now, I see little reason to wait further. This 21,470-bottle release is a delight. (Monica Larner)
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
There’s a radiance to the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino that makes it a total pleasure to taste today, as sweet exotic spices come together with dried black cherries, dusty flowers and hints of clove. This is pure pleasure on the palate, displaying both an opulence of fruit, yet also total poise and refinement, as sour berries find an energizing lift from juicy acidity. The 2018 doesn’t miss a beat, tapering off with rounded tannins while lingering on the palate for well up to a minute with an energizing burst of citrus, nuances of sweet rose and licorice. This is already so pretty today, yet it also possesses the balanced structure to mature beautifully, which isn’t found in many Brunello of this vintage. What a darling. (Eric Guido)
