Sangiovese, is one Italy's two most important wine grapes (with Nebbiolo being the other) and is the most-planted grape in Italy. The Sangiovese grape is not only used to make Italy's world-famous Chiantis, but it's also the base for the cherished Super Tuscan wines, and the unbelievable wines of Brunello de Montalcino.
Not surprisingly, Sangiovese wine pairs wonderfully with Italian foods like pasta with red sauce, as well as with rare steaks, and rich chicken and/or mushroom dishes. Of course, it's also wonderful by itself!

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is dark yet perfumed, with lavender and violet tones giving way to masses of ripe plum and cherry. Balsam herbs and hints of chalk develop with time in the glass, adding further depths. This is silky and round, with juicy acidity enlivening its ripe red and hints of blue fruit. Sweet spices, hints of cocoa and licorice linger, as the 2020 tapers off long with just a hint of fine tannin. This showboat of a Rosso is going to win a lot of hearts. (Eric Guido)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 There’s a mentholated freshness to the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Castello Banfi, as swirling unlocks further depths of dried cherries, mint leaf and worn leather. This is soft and round on the palate, with ripe red fruits and pretty floral tones offset by a twang of sour citrus. The 2018 tapers off lightly structured yet fresh, as inner rose and hints of salted licorice fade. (Eric Guido)JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023 Taking on more wood influence, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino is fragrant with cedar, vanillin spice, red plum, and clove. It is medium to full body, with tannins that turn to the more amaro spectrum quickly, with notes of turned potting soil and dried cherry pit. The palate is savory and gripping with potential wood tannins that give the impression they will outlast the fruit. Drink 2025–2030. (Audrey Frick)
