Sangiovese, is one Italy's two most important wine grapes (with Nebbiolo being the other) and is the most-planted grape in Italy. The Sangiovese grape is not only used to make Italy's world-famous Chiantis, but it's also the base for the cherished Super Tuscan wines, and the unbelievable wines of Brunello de Montalcino.
Not surprisingly, Sangiovese wine pairs wonderfully with Italian foods like pasta with red sauce, as well as with rare steaks, and rich chicken and/or mushroom dishes. Of course, it's also wonderful by itself!

WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2022 Juicy and easygoing, this offers earthy aromas of leather and blue flower with a whiff of game. On the light-bodied palate, dusty tannins accompany dried blackberry and crushed herbs before closing on a hint of anise. (Kerin O’Keefe)

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020 The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Cosimo from Palazzo takes things to a dark and richer place without sacrificing the energy and primary intensity that I’ve come to expect from this estate. An earthy mix of ripe blackberry and cherry is complemented by balsamic spice and black licorice. It’s velvety-smooth with excellent density to its ripe red fruits, yet not weighty or tiring in any way, as cooling acids and minerals balance the expression perfectly. Its tannins can be felt only in the finish, as this folds in upon itself and leaves you wondering what further depths will be revealed over time. Dedicated to the family’s father who passed in 2012, the Cosimo is from a parcel of the oldest vines in the vineyard, first planted by Cosimo Loia over thirty-five years ago. It’s a gorgeous wine. This was tasted over the course of two days and only got better. (Eric Guido)WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2021 This opens with aromas recalling pipe tobacco, blue flower, ripe woodland berry and oak-driven spice. Full bodied and savory, the enveloping palate features mature Marasca cherry, baked plum, vanilla and licorice accompanied by velvety, close-grained tannins. Drink 2024–2034. (Kerin O’Keefe)JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 11, 2020 A dense, layered red with berry, walnut and cedar aromas and flavors. Some fruit tea, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a solid finish. Tight and tannic. Give this three to four years to open. Drink after 2024. (James Suckling)JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/4/2021 This wine is dedicated to the memory of Cosimo Loia, who founded the estate in 1983. The Cosimo botting comes from the oldest vines of the estate, planted by Cosimo himself. The 2016 Cosimo Brunello is warm with fresh cherry fruit, baking spice, cedar, and sage. The palate is generous and ripe, with pure fruit and supple tannins. It was aged for 40 months in Slavonian oak barrels and French tonneaux. There is an approachability within its classic structure that is welcoming to drinking now. 2021–2031. (Audrey Frick)
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, December 1, 2022 Intense aromas of black cherries, lavender and spice, such as nutmeg. Some sandalwood and bark, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins for the vintage. Rather chewy, suggesting that additional bottle age is needed. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 Depths of dark, balsamic-tinged black cherry, plum sauce and autumnal spice make the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino impossible to ignore. This is velvety to the core, nearly opulent in feel, with a dense wave of ripe red fruits complemented by nuances of sweet lavender and tobacco. It leaves the palate clenched with fine tannins and primary concentration, creating a classic sensation that transcends the vintage. Nearly a minute goes by, and hints of cocoa and sweet herbs continue to resonate. Wow! Production at the Pertimali estate was down by 20% due to the spring frost, and the decision was made to place all of the juice usually intended for the Riserva into the straight Brunello, the result being one of the top wines of the vintage. (Eric Guido)JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023 Rich with compact and velvety layers, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino offers fleshy aromas of fig, black licorice, mocha, and roasted sage. It is full-bodied and displays more freshness and transparency on the palate, although it remains fully ripe, with black cherry, plum, turned soil, and macerated violets. It has full and present ripe tannins, a hint of crushed rock, and a saline, savory finish. With its liqueur-like richness throughout, this is a fantastic expression, but it needs a couple of years in the cellar before drinking over the following 10. (Audrey Frick)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023 Ripe and juicy, this red reveals plum, cherry, earth, tobacco and menthol aromas and flavors. Well-structured, delivering dense, dusty tannins and ample fruit to match, with a long, complex finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 4,000 cases made, 1,250 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2014 The 2012 Torrione is seriously beautiful. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and mocha notes flesh out in a supple, radiant wine endowed with gorgeous depth and pure resonance. All the elements meld together in this gracious, juicy Sangiovese-based red from Petrolo. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend.SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014 Effusive aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry and peony highlight this elegant red. Well-integrated tannins amp up the structure and density on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2023. 3,750 cases made.
VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra is hauntingly dark, complex and powerful in the glass. Coaxing reveals a blend of incense and curries, then cinnamon and clove and, finally, dried strawberries and mint. This casts a dense textural wave of red and black fruits across the palate, laced with blood orange and sweet spice nuances; a brilliant acidity also lifts it. It’s only through the finish that the 2016 reveals its firm tannic core while vibrating with residual tension and finishing with a lingering salted licorice note. The Bassolino di Sopra is holding its power in reserve, and it comes across as deceptively delicate at this moment. That said, this is a masterpiece in the making. Only 1,080 bottles and 600 Magnums were produced. (Eric Guido)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 Luminous red color. Perfumed red rose, violet, sour red cherry and minerals on the absolutely captivating nose. Then fresh juicy and very precise, with laser-like delivery of red cherry and raspberry flavors that linger long on the vibrant finish. Steel fermented only, differently from the 2017 Rosso (a year in which yields were so low that they were able to place all the wine in barrel and carry out fermentation there).
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2020 Chianti Classico is striking. Bright, punchy and vibrant, the 2020 possesses terrific energy from start to finish. Sweet red-fleshed fruit, cedar, blood orange, spice and incense are front and center. The 2020 screams with character. Once again, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi has crafted an exceptional Chianti Classico that punches well above its weight. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020 Bright cherry and juniper flavors are the main flavor themes, augmented by strawberry, wild thyme, stone and loam notes. Taut, elegant and well-structured, balanced and long. The finish reveals this wine’s potential. Best from 2023 through 2045. 525 cases made.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione shows an intense display of crushed raspberry and tart cherry, leaning to the darker and spicier spectrum, showing exotic brown spice, cedar, and shavings of baker’s chocolate. On the palate, soft textures give way to ripe black cherries with a rich, confectionery note, as brisk acids add energy, and saline-minerals slowly saturate. The finish is long, as residual acids sizzle upon the senses, tapering off to reveal pretty red berry fruits with a savory herbal twist. The 2015 Piaggione is already quite open, coming across as almost creamy on the palate, with vibrant primary fruit that nearly masks its structural core.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022 Easygoing and enjoyable, this has pretty aromas of violet, eucalyptus and wild berry. The smooth palate boasts ripe raspberry, juicy black cherry and star anise accompanied by pliant, polished tannins. Drink through 2024. (Kerin O’Keefe)JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 11, 2021 Plenty of sour-cherry and floral aromas with hints of orange peel. It’s medium-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Very typical Chianti Classico. Drink now.SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Open and fluid, this red evokes blackberry and blueberry fruit, framed by earth and underbrush notes. There’s a solid structure, with bright acidity in tandem with dusty tannins. Sangiovese, Colorino and Pugnitello. Best from 2023 through 2030. 33,300 cases made, 11,400 cases imported.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023 The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens nicely in the glass, drawing upon more intensity and depth as it does. It shows firm lines and a fleshed-out mouthfeel that encourages plenty of layering and textural richness. That velvety quality is the enduring signature of this estate, one that has achieved consistent results over the years. The only outlier to this pretty portrait is a 15% alcohol content that, although well absorbed by the wine’s texture, does risk becoming a distraction. Exactly 28,666 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)
SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022 Offers forthcoming aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, licorice, tobacco and vanilla backed by vivid acidity and dusty tannins, with a long, saline finish. Showing enough fruit and structure to absorb the oakiness over time, this is balanced overall and poised for a promising future. Best from 2026 through 2045. 800 cases made, 350 cases imported.VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 Rich and deeply alluring, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up to display crushed ashen stone mixed with hints of ginger, dusty florals and black cherry preserves. This is velvety-smooth and pliant in feel, lifted by cooling herbal and mineral tones, as an opulent wave of ripe red and black fruits washes across the palate, leaving a staining of minerals and spice in its wake. It’s long and structured, in need of further time to come fully into focus, yet somehow the 2016 Riserva remains completely fresh, tapering off to inner earth tones and hints of blueberry. Time will reveal further depths. This is an utterly classic Uccelliera Brunello in the making.RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022 The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a terrific wine: bold, well-defined, powerful and balanced. There are many good things to relate, but the high alcohol content (measured at 15.5%) is the only distraction. This is a trend in the Riserva category in the 2016 vintage. The bouquet shows black cherry, cassis, earth, leather and dried roses. The palate offers soft fruit flavors supported by firm oak tannins. Coming back to the bottle 24 hours later, I found impressive integration and smoothness that took away from that alcohol heat. Production is 9,600 bottles.JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021 This is really polished and refined, yet remains polished and beautiful, with cherries and berries, as well as light hazelnut and walnut undertones. Compact and silky. Drink after 2024, but already so attractive.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2018 Balifico, Volpaia’s Sangiovese/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is fabulous. Rich and inky, the 2018 offers up a compelling mélange of dark berry fruit, dark spice, licorice and espresso. I especially admire the wine’s textural richness. I imagine the 2018 will drink well for many, many years to come. In this tasting it is a total knock-out.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021 Alluring violet, black currant and black cherry fruit introduces this seductive red, with firm, pointed tannins and vivid acidity providing structure as this glides to a lingering, detailed finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. 750 cases made, 200 cases imported.
